I don't mean to be rude, but not believing in ghosts because of an absence of proof is the default position that everyone should have at every point.

+1

Eh, there are cultures embedded with stories and legends about ghosts etc.

AYRT

I should have probably added a qualifier - the default position "if you care about quantifiable evidence" or something like that. I do personally think it should be the default position no matter what, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible to believe in them. My point, I guess, was more that going on a ghost hunting expedition shouldn't affect things one way or the other.

You mean all of them? I can hardly think of a culture which wouldn't.

Isn't the whole point of shows like this like telling ghost stories around a campfire? Nobody actually believes they're going to find ghosts...it's just to give themselves some jump scares.

That's what I always assumed, anyway.

I have no idea what this is. Is it a ghost hunting show?
Anyway, there is proof of 'ghosts' that is peoples experiences. I'm amazed how many people have had strange/ghostly experiences and yet don't want to admit to it for fear of being mocked by others who will tell them they're 'making it up' or its 'in their heads ie hallucinating'.
Maybe be so. I myself have had experiences that I can't explain. I'm not saying they are 'ghosts' but imo 'ghost' is simply what we call some weird experience we can't explain. Could there be a logical explanation? Sure! I'm not discounting that. But, so far, the explanations science has given for these scenarios checks out for some but not others.
There is 'proof' but unfortunately people instantly dismiss anything because it doesn't fit into their established view of life. Everything that could be labelled 'proof' is instantly seen as being 'faked'. Most of it probably is. But I still believe there are some bits of 'evidence' that still can't be explained.
Again not saying it's necessarily ghosts/spirits/whatever. I'm just saying it can't be explained.

where to even start

i think my favourite part is the scare quotes you put around proof because you're well aware that "peoples experiences" is and never will be scientific proof, but you still gotta pretend you're entertaining the concept since you're vaguely aware that's what people do who want to be taken seriously

DA

Exactly. The scare quotes definitely give the game away. But we expect 'evidence' that can be 'proven' by 'reproducible experimentation.' That's how we would know they're not 'making it up,' see?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not how belief works, though. Plenty of people believe in things for which there is little to no proof, and absence of proof doesn't necessarily change their minds: flat earthers, chemtrails, various conspiracies, etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
God

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yep.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-30 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But that does sort of raise the question of what the point of looking for empirical proof is, doesn't it?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-30 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
To have something to show for it anyway?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, faith isn't perfect and lots of people want to prove their beliefs to others.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
ask all the "scientists" who've done their best to prove that the Hebrews really did live in Egypt, that Noah's Ark is real and resting on Mount Ararat, that some dude named Jesus was born in Nazareth and went on to become a prophet, that every artifact in every Catholic church really is a chunk of a cross or a crown from BCE, and that dinosaurs lived with humans via carbon-dating, archaeology, linguistics, and other verifiable sciences. all they've done in pursuit of proving their faith is proving that it isn't true.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
At least some of those people have the excuse that the lack of evidence wasn't established until they went out and established it...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
Why is "scientists" in scare quotes? If it weren't for their findings, we still wouldn't know if these things were real or not.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're thinking of the ones who are still looking for those things

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't really work that way, and where his "omg scared" reactions are over the top, it's not entirely without some genuine fear.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-01 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
i agree - i think there are definitely some locations that he clearly doesn't think there was anything there (apple taters) but there's some where he's clearly terrified and not faking it. i also, however, don't know if he realises the extent the normal fear of gross creepy dark houses plays in how much he's willing to read into noises that are literally nothing.

anyway, i love the show and it's actually made me way less scared of scary houses, possible demons and even other scary shows. if ryan can lock himself in a pitch black hellhouse and talk to what he thinks is the devil, i can watch a jump scare without almost dying!
