Girl or guy, it doesn't change the fact she can't enunciate her words.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound white as hell if you think that's the main criticism she faces

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
You too

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ariana Grande is Italian

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
And? Italians aren’t white. She also tans/bronzes herself at least 4 shades darker than she actually is and is actually pale as hell.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same anon. I meant Italians are white. D’oh.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Italians were considered white only relatively recently. They crossed the "they're white" threshold in cities where they had a major presence sometime in the late 40s. In areas of the country where they weren't so numerous, it was more like the 60s.

Hell, my dad was in Texas in the early 60s when he was in the air force and was informed that he wouldn't be served in a restaurant because he wasn't "white." He was hella shocked at that little piece of information.

Which only goes to show what a fucked up social construct "white" really is. It's just a mechanism to bestow certain privileges on people who are considered part of the club by virtue of the color of their skin.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
It’s 2019. She was born long past a time where Italians were already considered white. What is your point? She retroactively has POC status now even though she is benefiting from white privilege? I guess all those girls at Coachella who are 1/12th Cherokee aren’t racist either when they wear Native American head dresses.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
You completely missed my point.

Yes. It's 2019. She's considered white in the U.S. I'm pointing out that whiteness itself is a stupid construct to grant privilege to people in the club. Whiteness is a white supremacist construct.

I love how not using sunblock is cultural appropriation now. It doesn't trivialize actual real life issues at all.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
The argument is not just based on her skin being dark

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
ah yes. Because AAVE is a cornorstone of Italian culture that’s why it’s called African American Venacular English and she doesn’t bronze her skin so dark to benefit from that ethinic ambiguity when she is as white as Miley Cyrus. Oh wait.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

What are you on about exactly? I wasn't talking about her biggest criticisms, only my own issue with her. Get over yourself.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ariana Grande isn't a POC by the standard US definition. She's not Latina or mixed. She just uses a lot of tanning booths and AAVE.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is hilarious, because Italy, Spain and Portugal are all on roughly the same latitude and people living in Latin America are partly of Spanish and Portuguese descent. It's the most ridiculously arbitrary line to draw. Especially when you consider the range of skin tones you get in all three of those countries

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not gonna see any disagreement from me - I'm not even American, so my definitions of 'white' and 'non-white' are a little different. But if most of the discussion is based around modern US cultural norms, that's what we've got to work with.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Weirdly enough, "whiteness" is not actually just about, or even primarily about, skin tone

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
^^This^^

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's 24 levels of bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Shes not a POC by ANY standard definition, she is white.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Up to, like, the late 90s/early 2000s, Italian and Greek people were not 'white' in mainstream Australia. Of course, Australia's always been more concerned with ethnic heritage than exact skintone, so yeah. That's why I tend to add qualifiers in there - because that's when/where I grew up, and that's where I'm coming from in these discussions.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ariana lives in America and is an American citizen. So that’s nice and all but irrelevant to the discussion of whether Ariana has white privilege in America. Where she lives.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oooooh, now I get it! You're just being a dick! Okay then :)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying she's a WOC?
