it baffled me too.

Oh lol, I recently came across a blog post where an author had responded to a bad review with basically the writer version of that "you little shit I'm a navy SEAL and I've killed a hundred men" copypasta. It just went ON and ON and ON. It was funny to start off, then it was sad, then it swung back around to being funny.

It has saved me so much frustration! In the past I used to get so annoyed by the lack of closure that I'd write my own ending (as pure drawerfic, no one else ever saw it), but that wasn't really that satisfying either. It's much better that I know a story is completed before I start reading it.

(This extends outside of fic, too-- the whole reason I haven't read ASoIaF yet, haha. And at this rate, I may never...)

Writers who whinge and bitch about not getting enough comments drive me up the wall, even more so when they complain about the sort of comments they get on top of it.

I hate that it's always, without fail, trying to shift the onus of completion to the reader instead of the author. Like they're incapable of taking responsibility for their own projects. I get it! Writing and not getting the response you imagined can suck! But it's not their fault that you're not finishing, that's all on you.

Agreed.

Agreed. Especially that last part. If they want to regulate the types of reviews they get, fine, their story, that's their call, whatever...but then they shouldn't be surprised when that reduces the amount of comments they get as a result.

Plus, it just feels plain disrespectful to me. I'm the sort who will happily write long, positive reviews when I read something, and I love getting those kinds of reviews in turn.

But I also know that not everyone is going to review like that, for a whole host of reasons. At the end of the day, somebody took the time out to write something nice and positive about something I wrote, no matter how lengthy the review is. So I'm gonna take it for the genuine compliment it is and thank them for it.

(I'm also amused when people complain about not getting reviews because I grew up in an era where I was writing stories and not posting them anywhere online for comments and reviews. The only people who ever would see my writing were likely my family :p.

That's not to say I can't sympathize with the feeling of not getting any response to something you write, of course-now that I do share stories online, I get it. I've felt that way on occasion myself. But I don't get how complaining and blaming readers is supposed to entice them to review more.)

I love the Batwoman comics and was really excited when they announced the tv series, but the trailer makes it look so ridiculously low budget. Like it was made by the film studio The Asylum instead of DC/Warner Bros. I hope the actual show is a lot better.

I didn't hate Watchmen but the trailer was kinda better?

I thought Deadool looked so obnoxious from the trailer and it mostly wasn't.

Have had a major tension headache all day. I had to lead my public speaking group since no one else volunteered. Which meant taking time to plan something out. And then only four other people showed up. I have a conference call in 45 minutes when all I want to do is take a pill and go to sleep.

I feel like I'm the only person who likes the entire Pitch Black trilogy. All of it. And the weird middle one is my favorite.

Yes. And if someone is writing a gift!fic for someone and purposefully includes something they specifically said is a squick for them (happened to me once), that's just not cool.

I’ve posted about this on FS before, but I was at San Diego Comic Con the first year Twilight had a Hall H panel. Hall H sits 6,500 people, and it’s not cleared between panels, so a lot of people, self included, would stand in line for hours and stay in the hall all day, sitting through stuff we didn’t give a shit for to see the things we were excited about.

I forget what I was there to see, but before that day, I mostly thought of Twilight as basically the teen equivalent of cheap romance novels that get sold at grocery stores; harmless brain candy. I work at a library and read the first one because I try and read all the books with a thousand+ person waitlist. It seemed silly and harmless.

Then I sat through an hour of Twilight mania in a room that was at least half hardcore Twilight fans. Every time whatsisface who played Edward opened his mouth, they screamed.

Before every Q&A, fans are asked not to ask personal questions/make personal requests. Grown women asked the actor what kind of underwear he wore, what it was like being the sexiest man in the world, and whether he liked older women. I wanted to sink through the floor in embarrassment and none of the insanity was even directed at me.

Before then, the worst question I’d heard anyone ask was during another panel I was sitting through to see something else. A gormless wannabe screenwriter told an actress she was beautiful and asked if she’d star in his sure-to-be-a-blockbuster film. She laughed, and all 2,000 people in the audience jeered and booed.

No one laughed or booed adult women asking sparkly vampire dude what undies he had on.

Oh christ
As much as the whole, like, *thing* of Twilight-hate went way too far, holy shit that was a fandom in dire need of some goddamn chill.

Totally. And also the way that some writers act like they're entitled to comments from readers. Exact same thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-22 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
OMG Why? Why do people ask questions like that? I'll admit that I still like Twilight, but I would've been hella embarrassed had I been at that panel. Shit like that gives other fans a bad rep.

Like sure The Chronicles of Riddick is a weird af movie, but it's also really fun? And the Aesthetic of the bad-guys is fucking amazing. Like yes, pls give me more of everyone wearing stupid Hot Goth armor.

Nah. Kids are oblivious to stuff, and a lot of cartoons make jokes and references that are not stuff most kids have the slightest clue about.

I doubt you *or* Anon was a stupid kid.
