Nah, just a scraped elbow and a headache. There were two other people in the car, and they were fine, 'sept a bit shaken. Whether that was from the accident or the fact that I burst out laughing once the car stopped skidding is debatable, though.

168: Y'know, sometimes people have more talent writing plots than they do characters. My bff has this problem. She can write amazing plotlines and great dialogue, but she can't craft characters very well. Writing fanfiction with pre-established characters helps her hone her plot abilities. Don't rag too hard. Try and pair them up with people who create great characters but can't write plot to save their arses. ;)

If you are knitting and crotcheting only to give it away to your friends and family and not sell it, you're not doing anything of consequence.

Seriously. Why is it that writing appears to be the only hobby that people assume that if you aren't doing it with an eye on getting published that it is less worthy of your devotion than tennis, golf, football, cooking, home crafts...I could go on.

Hobbies are meant to be enjoyed for the sake of enjoyment and relaxation. Not with the almighty dollar in mind.

168- Try it. It has it's own challenges. Separate, but not always easier. It's far lazier to just broad brush judge it like that...(And trust me, I generally dislike fanfiction. I just recognize that writing it well it FAR from easy)

146) You just have to keep reminding yourself, they aren't dressing up for you and you aren't obliged to take pictures or squee over them (unless they are your friends). There are parts of fandom that don't interest me that much either *coughRPingcough*, but I don't begrudge other people their fun.

168) I think you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. As a person who writes both original and fanfic, the craft for producing a good story is substantially the same -- but one has a highly addictive social component that the other doesn't. Instead of being so judgmental and negative, you might try asking your friends what they get out of writing fanfic and listen to their answer.

Thank you for bringing up the social component. Community and a chance for immediate feedback (positive or constructively critical) are why I'd rather write fanfic than original fic.

Let's say I write a good original short story and send it off for publication. It's accepted, so hooray! Now what? I have an acceptance letter and a copy of the journal... and that's it. Maybe somebody reads my story, maybe they don't

What the hell more meaning or consequence does that have than writing a fanfic that I know for a fact has engaged and/or amused dozens of people? How does it have more consequence than a fanfic that gets people thinking more analytically, or examining their personal relationships, or reliving good memories, or just laughing their butts off?

136. I know exactly what you mean. It made me miserable that it took the man dying to get that movie into my store, to rent. and I loved it, it's still my favorite Heath Ledger film - but I don't think he was my favorite character, even the first time I saw it.

and I haven't watched it since he died, I'm not sure I could either. At least, yet... and I'm not even one of those people that cares enough about actors to get bent out of shape when they die. I think his death affected me the most because of it's... insane timing.

You're right, of course. Cathy became one bitter bitch as the series went on. She mellowed out in the last one when she was in her fifties but by then it was too late to fix a lot of the harm her bitchy had caused.
