106. even as a grif/simmons shipper... simmons would choose sarge. IN A FUCKING HEARTBEAT.

162. seconding all of the 'CAN'T UNSEE' comments. not that i would want to unsee that...

179. bookish remus certainly isn't canon--with the exception of the pensieve scene, but that was more it being O.W.L.s time and remus trying to blatently avoid seeing what was right in front of him--his friends being dicks.

i think it's a completely logical assumption to make from canon though. a quiet, intelligent kid who had absolutely no friends until the age of eleven or twelve... being one of and knowing a lot of those kinds of kids, i really can't think of a single one that didn't escape into books in that sort of manner. or even looking at him as an adult--he's spent most of his entire life alone, and as shown in deathly hallows, he can be incredibly avoidant and something of an escapist (trying to run off on an adventure with harry when tonks was all knocked up.)

in conclusion... yeah, it's not canon, but it still fits supremely well with his character.

LOL SORRY HAVE PAID WAY TOO MUCH ATTENTION TO LUPIN'S CHARACTER :B

179 OP

[identity profile] outboxed.livejournal.com 2008-09-30 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely understand where you're coming from. I mean, he's got to have spent his time doing something and his situation (as an unemployed werewolf) would probably have been something he would have wanted to escape from. The running off with Harry thing is certainly an implication of escapism to an extent though I think that was more of an attempt to re-live his youth, in a way.

And I have to agree that it does fit in a lot of ways. I just find it bizarre how everyone takes it as canon without question, I guess. And that it's such a universal interpretation.

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH ATTENTION! :3

129 - THIS IS THE BEST SECRET EVER.
147 - me too. And my best friend is obsessed with it. *facepalm*
162 - THANKS, NOW I CAN'T UNSEE IT.
164 - I agree, actually. I only wrote fanfiction because I felt I was too inept to write proper characters.
171 - I agree.

168. I find this strangely amusing.

Calling fanfiction "the lazy way out" implies that you can get the same thing from original fiction as you can get from fanfiction, both writing and reading it, which is not always true and certainly not for everyone. Subverting the existing text is part of the fun.

And original fiction is less original than people think. Research and worldbuilding is just as much a part of fanfic as it is of original fiction, and so much of what we read today is inspired and based on things that came before.

I know a few people who write both original fiction and fanfic at the same time, and I would hate for them to give up either.

I keep going back to your secret and wonder what you mean with "of consequence". If you truly believe what you wrote in your secret, then why even bother with fandom? Why do you even care what these people write?

HOLY SHIT, RVB SECRET.

Because damn right Simmons may be lost without Grif, but Sarge will always have him under his toe. It's awful. I love it. Grif needs to tell Simmons to smarten the fuck up and rebel! O'Malley was the greatest thing to happen to Simmons.
and wtf there's a fandom for this that isn't nothing but fat male sweaty gamer nerds?

106 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-09-30 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Simmons is v. whipped. By... both Sarge and Grif, really. :U But Grif would probably be less disastrous for him in the long run. Totally agreed about O'Malley, though. And that is probably terrible.

You don't know that I'm NOT a fat male sweaty gamer nerd (I mean, I'm not, but you don't KNOW that), but you've got your standard teenaged girls spreading the buttsechs over at [livejournal.com profile] rvb_slash and there's CAPSLOCK DISCUSSION NO SRS HERE at [livejournal.com profile] capslock_rvb.

[identity profile] ann89103.livejournal.com 2008-09-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
119 - I'm not sold on this pairing, but I still say go for it! Maybe you'll be the writer or artist that can convince me.

168 - Idiot. Most people who write fanfic like doing so -don't be insulting. They (at least the good writers) see something in the characters they connect to, or some facet of personality they want to explore. Nothing wrong with encouraging original stories, but way to put down your friends for doing something fun.

They definitely resemble each other.

[identity profile] honestys-easy.livejournal.com 2008-09-30 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
114. Yes! Barney Stinson, in every way possible, makes life awesome. :D

135. Don't worry, you're not going insane, it's just what happens on Heroes: everyone's related, and everyone's fucking each other. I just don't know how Kring does it. XD

145. OMG, YESTHANKYOU. When they first revealed it I was yelling at my TV because that is SO NOT RUBY. They've had characters in other bodies before where the actors portrayed the character well, but this chick is so not doing it for me. Hopefully Ruby'll burn through this body real quick and have to possess a more convincing actress next time around.

147. I'm reminded of a MadTV skit Lisa Loeb did once: "Pretty pretty....pretty white kids with problems..."

158. I wasn't particularly thinking of it as some new, edgy take on religion since it really is the way angels are depicted in the Bible as well as a slew of other otherworldly beings from other religions.......oh dear, is this going to incite some new craze for black-feathered angel wings at Hot Topic? :-\

168. blahblahblah soooo probably not in before wank. Where's your novel? So sorry your friends aren't living up to your expectations.

182. Is Nathan Petrelli conservative? We've never really heard his political stance and for some reason (probably because he's running from New York City) I've always imagined him to be a Democrat. But that's, once again, most probably because he'd never be elected as a Manhattan Congressman if he were Republican.

182 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-09-30 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's never explicitly mentioned and I'm British so obviously our political structure is a little different but I always assumed Nathan was a conservative. Partly because he bases his image on being 'a family man' and having this cute nuclear family which I'd say is definitely a very right wing values thing to do. Also, when picking a tie (I think in the pilot ep) he chooses the red one because 'the president wears red' and I mean it's fairly unsafe to assume that the president in Heroes is meant to be Bush but, you know, as it stands the president is a Republican.

In my eyes, Nathan also comes from a much more typically conservative background given that his family are seriously rich. He comes off as very nationalist and patriotic given that he's lawyer working for the district attorney (therefore on behalf of the state) and he's also served in the military. I am definitely seeing all this from a very British perspective though and I understand that, in general, America goes in for patriotism a lot more than we do so it might be perfectly normal for a Democrat to advertise himself as patriotic. So, yeah, I might be completely wrong but, from my perspective, he definitely comes across as fairly conservative.

162- Very likely.

I only saw the pilot, absolutely hated it and never watched another episode again. I don't feel like my life is missing something ;-)

[identity profile] aliaras.livejournal.com 2008-09-30 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
183: See, I love fandom speak, and tvtropes speak, and internet speak, because it's just like awww internet you're making your own language stuffs now! I'm a linguistic nerd, though, so YMMV.

As for things like totes, butthurt, etc, I see them having connotations beyond the words they abbreviate. Butthurt, for example, implies that the thing one is butthurt over is not all that important. I see fandom-words as a way to re-add some of the complexities of tone you get in speech.

But maybe I'm just a pretentious linguistics nerd. Sorry for long post.

I think I love you.

108) Eeeeeeeeeee <3

168) If by "real", you mean effort put into the piece's mechanics, themes and overal literary merit? Then there's plenty of real fanfic out there, and plenty of original work full of lame and fail. So what if your friends don't have a burning desire to create their own fandoms? Not everyone who cooks well is cut out to be a head chef running a restaurant. Or an Iron Chef. In RPS fic. Damnit, Secret 154.
