119 - Not sure you'd get lynched, but I kinda agree. Where's the fic??

155 - I appreciate the eye candy, but why Adam Ant? And if he has an anime why haven't I heard about this?? *shot*

162 - CANNOT UNSEE. Which I think is awesome, except I'd still rather run away with Basil than Ten.

163 - No, no, I'm afraid to say it NEVER goes away. I am still terrified and working on that whole sleeping with ones eyes open thing. I hates you, Weeping Angels D:

101 - Which is why I'm happy in my little corner(s) and don't venture out into the wild larger communities.

113 - I couldn't because I wrote my thesis on Beowulf and... yeah.

155 - Okay!

159 - Thankfully no-one told this to the Japanese so there are pretty nice Hetalia het fanworks over there. (Austria/Hungary = <3)

160 - Yeah, that about sums up my opinion on the topic.

Wat the hell.
Yatta-Cloud and Yatta-Zack from Kumoricon 2005 or 2006. @_@ Although, completely agreed.

162: ...oh gad, can't unsee it.

173: FUCK YES. RAVENOUS. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A COPY OF THAT MOVIE FOR THE LAST YEAR.

I've never been particularly cannibalistic, but that movie made me wanna try human. And I've been so tempted to just wander into the hospital where I work, steal an aborted fetus and make soup out of it.

I've actually made it halfway to the room where they keep them with the intent of theft, before walking way.

110. Wait, which one is "he" and which is "him"?

117. I don't understand secrets like this. You like an animated character. Wait until you're attracted to a real person before deciding you're gay/bi/straight/whathaveyou before deciding you're in a closet that you need to come out of.

122. Word. Hence my bafflement re: Sansa hate, because where else did she get her idealism from if not her father? It just looks different in a grown man.

133. It's a fact: fake scary evil priests are hot. See: Carnivale, etc.

139. Those are some low standards for weirdness your friends have.

140. They're just so cute together. :)

155. Adam Ant? Wait, what is this?

I think the blue one is House and brown is Wilson (I'm going by eye color)
Still, I doubt that House loving Wilson too much is the reason it's not gonna be canon.

168. Whether fanfic counts as 'real' writing is debatable. I believe that any writing, even lazy and 'bad' writing, counts as writing simply because...it's writing! How many times can I write out the same word?

If you're going by 'you can't sell it' well then...I'd disagree with your definition but yeah, it wouldn't be 'real' if you couldn't make a quick buck off of it. :\ If it's because fanfic already has the world and characters created for you, I can see where you'd think it was 'lazy' but I'd still disagree. You may not create the characters or the world, but you'd still need to be able to at least analyze them in order to write them well, and there are plenty of people who put a lot of work into their fics to make them work. Those who don't could be called lazy, but I think you're talking in a very broad sense here.

...And then there's the 'fanfic has no meaning' argument that I heard before. If that's what you subscribe to, I personally think it's rather full of bullshit. I've read fanfic that's had more 'meaning' to me than 'real' books. But the problem with 'meaning' in fiction is that it's all up to the reader. If you can't pull meaning from a genre, then I'm inclined to think it's more about you than the genre as a whole.

Especially when you consider that if your fic is within the public domain, then you can absolutely sell it. Otherwise we wouldn't have all of those Sherlock Holmes and Jane Austen pastiches.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-29 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
117. THE COOL PART IS, you DON'T actually have to tell everyone about your newfound lesbianism. You're not gay because of a character who is designed to do two things: further the plot and appeal to people.

People who invent characters do think about what kinds of characters would appeal to their audience...which is why you sometimes get characters totally changing their attitudes/getting makeovers in shows/book series/etc (because they weren't so popular with the audience but were important to the plot) and also why you get a lot of variety. Successful people think about this, anyway. Otherwise you get those series that appeal to only certain people who like certain things and never quite take off. Why do you think Harry Potter is so popular? It's surely not the writing. Not even the setting/imagination/plot of the whole series could really carry it as far as it went if the characters were all the same. There are so many characters to relate to that you can almost feel LOVE for these characters.

In addition to this, most people can't be bothered to make an outright ugly character/hire an ugly actor/actress. Even the so-called ugly characters are generally just flawed, which people tend to find sexy more than anything. What you get is the man/woman of your dreams except they are a drawing, a couple of words, or an actor portraying an imaginary person...can't actually hold you at night, all that jazz.

But, it's normal to be attracted to fictional characters.. I mean, why not? It's cool to dream. But I personally don't think characters (or even celebrities, who are often glorified by the media and more or less made into characters) should dictate someone's sexuality. I'm positive that I am a lesbian, yet I am still attracted to a few male characters in sitcoms, and a few male actors. I don't know why, they are probably just written to appeal to the type of person I am/am interested in, and share a lot of characteristics with me. Same with the actors, they share a few things in common with me and seem like cool guys. On top of that, they are almost always gorgeous in some way or another.

In short if this is the only female you are attracted to, then you are probs not a lesbian and needn't worry about telling peeps. SORRY BOO.

Urgh sorry, that was kind of bitchy. You probably realized all of this. I am just seeing this kind of thing a lot.

146. OH MY B LET ME GET SUM PLASTIC SURGERY.

151. Lol. I know how it is.

168. Agreed. Even if it's well written, it's like ok well you bypassed all the hard shit like building context and characters.

idk why i am being anon I JUST FEEL LIKE IT.

126. ZOMIGOSH MULCAHY!
And thanks for picking some of the sexiest shots of him to boot. I'm a Catholic, man, y'wanna know the level of guilt I feel about knowing that if I were a nurse at the 4077, I'd've trapped him in the supply closet, thrown him against the wall, and done things that would've had the both of us in confession for weeks?

Because yeah. Oh man, I totally would. There are few men quite as gorgeous as John Patrick Francis Mulcahy, or whatever order those names go in. With that sweet soul shining through and the occasional snark? Yeah.

But beyond that, I think Father Mulcahy is one of the best-written Christian characters ever. To me, he embodies the way people of faith should be trying to act--living out our faith and being clear on it, making out faith and opinions known, but with constant tolerance of others beliefs and disbeliefs, never shoving it down someone's throat or even insisting--just suggesting. One of my favourite characters of all time.

146. Y'know, I was fairly sure people who cosplay do it because they feel like dressing up as a character, not because they want you to be interested in looking at them. Attention's a nice bonus, but the few times I've bothered to put the effort into it, it's been because there was a character I loved/identified with, and I felt like dressing cool for a day.

150. I'm distressed by how hot I find that picture. Ah, Eddie.

162. SENSE. THAT MAKES WAY TOO MUCH.

For serious, I can't unsee it now. It makes perfect sense. Certainly works with the way Ten is sexy and endearing, but at the same time a complete self-centered jerk focused on his own drama. Also works with the "dangit, why do I find you sexy?" factor. Man. Can't unsee.

163. Doesn't get much better. I freaked out after watching that episode when I lived in a city with minimal statuary.

Then I moved to London.

Suddenly I realise exactly how terrifying that episode is, especially the ending montage. Thanks, Moffat, now I'm scared of half the things at the place I work(ed).

168. Plz to be going away now kthxbye.

171. I'd scoff, but suddenly I realise...it's true.

176. I'm still annoyed that Light didn't wind up a Shinigami at the end (and I only have a passing accquaintance with DN. But seriously, I thought that was the set-up).

178. I didn't watch Toonami when Naruto was on, but the idea of Tom having a farewell makes me kind of misty-eyed. I watched it back in the day, man.

185. Who's that?
