There is a tendency in fandom to give white male characters more of the benefit of the doubt. Some of it can be explained by the racial and gender bias inherent in the show, but I've never seen any evidence of the female/PoC characters being that much more badly written than the white males, and yet fandom seems to hold the minority characters to a generally higher standard.

It's not overt, really. Most fans are appalled when judged like that, but it's still *there*.

That's exactly what puts me off about the J-Rock fandom in general; all the wank, snarkiness and elitism so I'm not as involved as I probably should be. (And I'm pretty much a fandom newbie.)

And I've come to realize that I'm so much happier if people know and respect that I can like other things too. Not just J-Rock. Real friends will respect you no matter what.

109 - Nodame Cantabile! I love that show/manga so, so much. That scene never fails to make me happy.

124 - *raises hand* I admit, I'm a little more into the NFL than the college game, but I love football. And you're right - there's not a lot of overlap.

147 - I've read some amazing fanfiction that dealt with serious topics in that fandom. There is a lot of fun, silly stuff too. As a writer (who usually does fluff/silly stuff, admittedly) it can be an interesting challenge to try something more serious. Both to keep the characters IC and personally. After all, even though it is a game where you cross examine a parrot, they're also dealing with murders and revenge and plots that sometimes span years. There are serious situations in the game, even if they're mostly dealt with light-heartedly. *shrug* my two cents.
