Who do you want to stay in the Democratic primaries?

Not necessarily get the nomination, but stay around a little longer

Warren, Harris, Castro, and Buttigieg.

I know she's just doing it for the book promo and she's by no means presidential material, but I want Marianne Williamson to stick around. I think she can appeal to a certain demographic that normally isn't involved with politics and brings up issues rarely addressed, like how she brought reparations and US foreign policy causing issues that directly affect us. The memes are fun too.

I also want Andrew Yang to stick around because automation and unemployment resulting from that is a huge looming issue that needs to be addressed. Additionally, his ability to appeal to disenfranchised and reactionary voters while promoting liberal policy is worthwhile.

I don't know that the anti-vaccines lobby in the Democratic Party needs to be represented...

Call it what it really is: pro-disease.

Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, Booker, Castro, Klobuchar, Gillibrand, Yang, De Blasio, and Inslee. That would be the field if I was in charge.

Hoping Yang and Gabbard stick around.

Want Warren to get the nom.

Harris is the embodiment of everything I despise about leftism in 2019, and if she hangs around in any serious capacity, I will be dangerously close to conceding that I no longer have a political party that represents me. I absolutely will not vote for her, even if it means re-electing Trump.

Biden needs to stop.

Re: Who do you want to stay in the Democratic primaries?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
What about Harris is so bad that makes not voting for her worth a Trump re-election? Because to me even the worst Democrat is miles better than Trump and I will vote for whoever the nominee is.

Literally everything about Harris is that bad. She makes me understand how the Never-Trumpers felt. If Harris the future of the party... I have no party.

Let's just put it out there: they don't like that she's black.

Why do you dislike Harris (and leftism in 2019?) I’m genuinely interested in your answer, because ... I know that there’s no way to say this that doesn’t come across as confrontational, but you sound like you might not/don’t currently have much to lose, personally, under Trump’s presidency, continued or otherwise, because I can’t think of anything Harris has done aside from work in law enforcement to prompt such vitriol.

I agree. Her work in law enforcement gave me pause at first. But she's grown on me. She's not my top choice. But I'd be okay with her, and I think she's good for the race in general.

It's hard to imagine where this is coming from

I honestly don't want Warren if she sticks with her "eliminate private healthcare" stance because I absolutely refuse to vote for her if so.

I have healthcare through my job. I worked hard to get that healthcare, I don't pay much for it since my job picks up most of the tab, and I like it. I don't want to give it up. I totally agree that we need to have affordable healthcare for everyone, but I don't agree that we should take away the plans that people have if they like them and want to keep them.

Re: Who do you want to stay in the Democratic primaries?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not entirely sure that I agree with entirely eliminating private health care either. I do think that it's important that private health insurance (whether or not it's employer-funded) should not be the primary means for people to get health care coverage - I think it should be something that's on top of some kind of general public plan.

It seems to me that as long as you have private health insurance as the primary point of access, you're going to end up with a problem where all of the overhead of the insurance industry, all of the middleman effects from the complexity of the insurance system, all of the money taken out of the health system as profit - all of that would still be affecting the system, and I don't think that we see any kind of benefits from the private health system that would justify that.

But with all that said, I do have three questions - one, if a new public plan provided the same standard of care while being cheaper for you, would you still object to losing your employer insurance? Two, are you really sure that this issue is important enough to you to justify keeping Trump in office? Three, how much of a difference does it make to you, from your personal standpoint, whether the company pays the health insurance company, or whether the government pays tax to the government which then funds healthcare?

I have awesome insurance through my job. It took me a decade to get promoted to a position where I was eligible for it. But I remember the terror of being uninsured, and if Medicare For All, a public option, single payer, or whatever, would offer me (and everyone else) the same level of coverage without having to jump through insurance company hoops while ill or recovering? I would absolutely give up my employee plan.

Also, people who have other insurance (from their spouse, parents, etc) at my job can cash out their benefit payments to the tune of an extra $10,000 per year. If I had government provided healthcare and could cash out my benefits, it would amount to something like a 55% raise, since I make less than $20,000 a year if I don’t count my health benefits.

AYRT

That is indeed a radical stance. We need more choices, not less. But her stance is rooted in her desire to take on large corporations that border dangerously on monopolies - like health insurance corporations. I have healthcare through my job, too. I pay a lot for it, and it covers almost nothing. I work one entire week per month just to enrich healthcare executives. So I absolutely see where she's coming from.

I have healthcare through my job too, and it's kind of shitty.

Sounds like your company is doing something illegal if they're still allowing 'cadillac plans.'

Marianne Williamson! She will fix the country with the power of love.

the only way this would work is if she's going to lay her love-charged hands on Trump's face and make him turn to ash like Harry Potter did to Voldemort in the Sorcerer's Stone

Re: Who do you want to stay in the Democratic primaries?

I kind of think Biden needs to go. And he could take a few of the other guys that haven't made any sort of an impression on me (Hickenlooper, Bennet, Bullock, Ryan) with him. I could do without Williamson - look, plans are a really good idea. Swalwell is just kind of annoying, so he can go. And, damn, that still leaves like 18 people because there were some that didn't get to the magic numbers to participate in the debates. But they need to narrow the field, by a lot. Ten people debating is a terrible set up. And 25 people running is going to work against them - people are going to get campaign and debate fatigue and we might end up with the worst one.

Re: Who do you want to stay in the Democratic primaries?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
They have 1 more debate (or set of debates, I guess) with 20 people participating, and then they start reducing the numbers after that. I think a bunch of candidates will start to drop out if they don't start getting traction after those debates.
