[Cassandra Clare]

ok, cassandra

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
NGL, it would be kinda hilarious if she were still lurking in fandom spaces, stirring up shit.

Did she ever apologize and admit her wrongdoings?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not that I can tell.

Even worse, there's been accusations as recently as 217 that she was still doing this shit. Given how infamous she was for this kind of shit back then and had no remorse, I don't know how anyone who remembers her in fandom would give her the benefit of the doubt just because she's published.

[personal profile] hey_hey_hey 2019-07-06 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
True. People should just focus on the fact she's a fucking hack.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. She was an asshole during her Harry Potter BNF days, so I get why people hate that she was able to make a career as a fiction writer, but at the end of the day the arguments about her plagiarism come off petty.

There was bullying and scamming people too. It isn't just the plagiarism that's the issue here.

But yeah, leave her looks out of it.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

The plagiarism seems to be referenced more often than the more downright user things she did. It really isn't that hard to go after her for the person on the inside.

And there have been charges that some things in her novels were plagiarized from Sherrilyn Kenyon also.

(Which also has nothing to do with her appearance.)

Yeah, I was much more familiar with Laptop-gate until a detailed write up of the plagiarism debacle was put out there.

I wholeheartedly agree. She fucked up when she was younger. I don't particularly like her writing but she's not the spawn of Satan just because she made bad choices when she was younger.

I'm so sick of this 'one mistake and you're irredeemably evil for life' thing.

Younger? She was almost 30 when the plagiarism scandal broke and was in her 30s when she didn't know people should have renter's insurance and her laptop was allegedly stolen.

Except for that one person, all the people in Cassie's clique were in their late 20s and 30s and beyond. Younger... Yeesh.

Dude. They hammer it into your head in school that plagiarism is wrong so it's not like she didn't know that she did a bad thing. And she didn't just do it once, either, she ganked lots of stuff. There's really no excuse or defense.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Younger"

She was an adult, not 13, when she did that shit.

Ok, so you say she borrowed freely (i.e., plagarized) from others for her fanfics, you say?

Well, she then lifted plots and entire passages from her fanfic and re-used them in her published novels. Does borrowing form herself somehow negate all wrongdoing?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
She's old news and low-hanging fruit, and yeah, it's kind of pathetic when people cling to the wank.

Let's be honest. The real truth is that people can't stand that someone "undeserving" gets to win the fanfic dream of being a poparlish pro-author with movie adaptations etc, without even being a very good writer. And people are attached subconsciously to the just world hypothesis, and so she must be torn down and punished and incessantly, useslessly revealed as a fraud.

Note that I put undeserving in quotes not because I think she deserves success (super doesn't) but because it's a really bad frame for thinking about the world, and success in such a random industry especially.

TLDR it makes perfect psychological sense that people can't let it go, and I mostly sympathize, but we're never actually going to ruin her success, so it would be healthier for all of us to just move on, imo.

Yeah, it is shocking, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
That people think that because she did it a bunch of times before that she would do it again?

There is no reason for comments about her appearance, I agree, but she profited off her wrong-doings and so I think it's not unreasonable to think she might do it again.

If she is unhappy she is fat then yeah bring it up because it eh kind of things she would use to attack people with, if she doesn’t care then it’s not worth it.

I don’t know why people support her, she was notorious for sending her fans to bully people

Like, fuck her and her (if it bothers her) fat ass.

The fact that she sent her friends (at least one of whom is an actual lawyer) to BULLY TEENAGERS seems to have escaped all the CC defenders.....

Plagiarism is one thing.
Scamming people is another.
Wrecking emotional havoc/disrupting lives is a third.

At a point there is a line between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Not even fandom specific. Just, behavior. CC crossed that line. Yeah, a lot of rich and famous people cross moral lines. But should we applaud them and not criticize them for it?
