Hmm.

Well, the actress definitely didn't deserve all the vitriol directed at the character. And I didn't mind the character herself, but given why and how she came to be there, I can understand why people didn't like her. Not just the off-screen stuff, the on-screen machinations were kind of bizarre (obviously someone who had a serial killer as a father will be a great profiler and yeah, absolutely, that is how FBI cadets finish their training).

I didn't care for the character, but that wasn't the actress' fault at all. Unfortunately, I think it was a combination of several things... very underwhelming writing and character backstory in a show that usually does those things well, and fandom was already extremely angry at the show's decision to fire Paget Brewster and AJ Cook for no apparent reason. I think budget was cited, which is why people were upset when the show added a new, badly written female character into the mix.

The show was forced to do it by the network.

ayrt

Yeah, the whole thing was such a mess. I don't even know what they were trying to do with citing the budget because you know the female actors weren't getting as much as the male. And bringing in a new younger female actor/character brought in some ageism. And then there's the whole workplace that fires the more experienced workers for the more inexperienced (cheaper, both because of inexperience in the industry and with negotiating salary and terms) labor.

All of this. She was just unfortunately coming in at the worst possible time. I can't begin to imagine how rough that would be. And didn't she find out she wasn't returning to the show through some talk online rather than CBS directly as well? I seem to remember hearing that somewhere, and that's beyond shitty if true. CBS, man, I swear...

That said, I still like Seaver herself-I think there's enough interesting bits about her there that I can see where they may have wanted to go with her character, had she stuck around longer. I'm like the OP in that I can find something to love about every team member past and present. I think they've all brought something different and interesting to the team over the years, and there's been a variety of lovely dynamics and relationships (in regards to Seaver, I liked her interactions with Emily and Rossi in particular).

And if I feel the show didn't explore certain parts of the characters and their relationships enough, well, hey, more fun stuff for me to explore in my fics, then :D. Or I'll find fics by other writers who flesh that stuff out beautifully, too (and I have).

Course, I tend to have that attitude with all my favorite shows. Unless the character is meant to be hated in canon for whatever reason, I can't really think of any characters on the shows I watch that I outright dislike. I may have particular favorites, sure, but I'll still like all the characters to some degree or another.

That's a good point. I think she could have been interesting. But the way they treated the actresses for JJ and Prentiss, it makes sense that their replacement would be disliked by the audience.

I thought the actress was good, but the character was underdeveloped and the reasons for her being there were weak. I thought they were going to do something interesting with her inexperience (like Reid in the first season) but they instead went in the "so awesome!!!!!" direction with nothing to support it.

And of course the network firing Cook and Brewster to bring in new!young!cheap!actress was shit and got the whole thing off to a bad start.

I liked her too. I can't think of any character that I can't stand. They even managed to make Strauss likable by the end. It's one of CM's strong suits. I felt bad for the actress, and the character seemed to be fitting in more by the end of her season. I'd be happy if she had returned as a cameo.

The actress tried her best, but it just wasn't great material to work with in the first place. Everyone was still pissed off about Brewster and Cook being unceremoniously dumped, and then hiring a younger actress with a weak, slightly Mary Sue-flavored backstory to replace them? That was a bad call. It was awful that fandom took it out on the actress, though.
