I've read this secret several times and still dont understand. Could someone please explain it to me like I'm 5.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
As I understand it, every now and then the OP wants to tell her Tumblr mutuals congrats on not being fully as misogynistic as you could be, and then fuck out of their lives

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it as OP's Tumblr friends(?) like to pat themselves on the back for being Woke Queens who are Not Like The Other Girls, and this annoys OP?

OP

Yes, this.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Man.

We must run in just entirely, 100% different fandom circles

OP

I've been in multiple fandom circles at once for years and never found one to be the opposite of my secret. Are you saying your fandoms are full of girls who actually hate and bash female characters? I find it hard to believe that happens with more than a couple odd fans and without them getting tenfold the backlash from the rest of the fandom.

No, but I've found them to be genuine and sincere in liking and caring about female characters, not just trying to be woke.

Now that I think about it, the fandom where I most frequently see people talking about female characters is Discworld. They’re definitely not ironic or insincere in loving women.

I think you can sincerely like and care about female characters, and *also* think all those other less woke girls totally don't appreciate them like you do and trash on other fans.

I see lots of female fans call other female fans are misogynists for not liking certain characters, even if the supposed misogynist likes *other* female characters, just not the one in question.

I've always liked female characters better than male characters, but I don't get in arguments about it. (I used to now and then but I realized it was stupid.)

Supernatural fandom. Even Misha Collins commented on the phenomenon. It was bad.

I lol'd.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You could also just unfollow them. Like, right now.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-08 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
hah, reminds me of a Buffy quote: "They can't just leave; they always gotta say something."

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but that would be the mature thing to do and OP clearly wants their flounce in order to feel ~superior~ about it. Buuuut they also seem aware that's childish as fuck, so they've gotten themself stuck and I'm laughing

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Or maybe I also like them and their posts most of the time and that's why I'm not quietly unfollowing or "flouncing"? But hey, believe whatever makes YOU feel more mature than some random secret maker.

ikr, why waste the energy to keep following people you don't seem to like?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
*Fandom Old Flashbacks* I need a drink...

I find it interesting that on here people have accused anyone who likes m/m slash as having 'internalised misogyny'. This makes me realise they don't know anything about what real misogyny is.
The fact is, writing m/m, having strong (or not) female characters to me is not really that relevant, when it comes to the whole scheme of things, particularly in relation to feminism. As in I don't care if you don't like Black Widow (even though I say she's awesome). Now when actual film makers don't represent, that's more of an issue, especially as having strong female characters has been proven to increase box office sales.
To me, focusing on other women (ie fan fiction) takes the focus off where it truly should be- the patriarchal institutions (including the film industry) that arguably benefit of misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Who said that?

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Or they're both problems and dismissing one just because it's not your pet project is gross.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-10 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That, and a ton of the worst written female characters are down to the huge over-representation of men within the arts, in this case specifically script-writing; but instead people cape for these characters as if disliking the way they wrote a woman is the same as disliking women; and let the producers completely off the hook.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-09 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
i love the implication that anyone who defends female characters from unnecessary hate is doing it out of 'performative wokeness' and not just finding the OTT hate they get irritating as fuck.

because y'know, no one actually likes female characters gosh.
