I haven't finished yet (and obviously don't care about spoilers) but... yeah, no way he's going to stay dead. I liked Hopper as a character more before they kept cranking his temper up to 11 (haha) and his jealousy of any male Joyce talked to got super old, super fast.

I was so bewildered by his behavior this season, especially after all of the emotional growth last season. It make absolutely zero sense to me and was so offputting to watch.

Agreed, but we'll developed character arcs aren't this show's strong point, that's for sure.

Omg, this. I don't like Hopper much to begin with, but wow, he sucked in season 3.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - I was frustrated with him in season 2 but accepted the work he put in at the end, in apologizing/talking calmly to El, accepting Mike's anger and comforting him patiently, comforting Joyce as well and offering her a friendship after getting along fine with Bob all season. I looked forward to seeing more of that development while keeping his gruff crunchy outside, you know? And then ALL of that was GONE.

Hopper was such a toxic douchebag in S3, it honestly made me super uncomfortable whenever he was onscreen, to the point where I was legit rooting for that Soviet assassin to finish him off just so I wouldn't have to keep seeing him onscreen anymore. It was baffling, really. It's like the writers got complete amnesia on his characterization and had to reconstruct it from zero, but with only the scenes where he beats up that guy who "found" Will's "body" in S1, and the scene where he gets angry at El in S2, as the sole references...

And that whole "fighting and mistreating each other means romantic tension" thing with Joyce and Hopper in S3, ugh, such an uncomfortable trope. I like their interactions in seasons 1 and 2 but the third season killed any chance of me enjoying the ship.

Right? Like Hop was the character that got my first big belly laugh of the show with the line about Eleanor Gillespie and the owl, and now he's raging out because Joyce talked to her kid's science teacher? HMMM.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-12 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't imagine they'll bring him back. El has to grow and move on without him.

Really hard to imagine the show with Hop, though.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
SA *without Hop

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
IMO this season had some jerkass instead of him anyway, so it was almost like a show without Hopper already.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
He seemed true to character to me. *shrug*

(Anonymous) 2019-07-12 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate to break it to you, OP, but we didn't actually see Hopper die. If you don't see the death, chances are they didn't die in the first place, which is very different from a character straight-up dying and then the writers going "lol nvm" and bringing them back later. This is very common in fiction. His "death" is ambiguous at death and there's a 50/50 chance he survived. There was even a possible reference to him at the very end in that weird Russian prison. I usually loathe character death but this one didn't affect me any because it was pretty obvious he didn't actually die and I'll be disappointed if he did.

If it's enough to make you stop watching, tho, good riddance I guess.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
This. When character deaths aren't shown on screen there's a high probability that they didn't really die after all. That's been true since pretty much the dawn of time.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Especially in sci-fi/horror. There's a reason there's a 'did you see the body??" trope a lot in those styles.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-14 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing there's a 0% chance Hop's dead. We didn't see the death, and we don't even know for sure what being at the center of that stuff would do. The reference to the American in the Russian prison seemed to me to be definitely Hopper. Who else could it be? Except a new character, I guess, but why would they tease a new character so vaguely in the last two minutes of the season?

Plus, his emotional arcs (especially the ones he shares with other characters) are not completed. Whatever, some people didn't like the Joyce-Hopper and El-Hopper stuff, but you can't say they felt wrapped up. Joyce especially--Joyce trying to move on but wondering what might have been when suddenly Hopper returns six months later and they have to decide whether to really give a relationship a try is grade A premium soap. All of Joyce's boyfriends die is not.

Personally, I might quit watching if Hop doesn't come back, so I guess they're losing a viewer either way.

I wonder if they left his fate vague for a Doylist reason, because at the time they were writing and shooting S3 they didn't know how successful Harbor's Hellboy film would be.

I'm normally very into NOT bringing back dead characters. (I didn't even like it when they did it to Spock in the Star Trek movies, that's how much I don't like it.) But as people are pointing out, we didn't see a body and we didn't even see a funeral, so... just because people think he's dead doesn't mean he's dead. I do hope he's a little less abrasive if they bring him back though. Maybe his experience in a Russian prison (if he is in fact in one) will humble him a little.

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
If they don't bring back Hopper then I don't think I'll watch Season 4. David Harbour is hot!

(Anonymous) 2019-07-13 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
By now you should know that if you don't see them die then they aren't dead. he is being held by the Russians. At the end they showed the Russian prison and two guard dragging a guy off to feed to the monster. When they were picking the guy one said "the american?" There is your proof that he is alive and next season if there is one will be about rescuing him.

It seemed like a pretty obvious fake death to me since there was no body, and a gate to the Upside Down right behind. Plus, given the teaser at the end that seems to deliberately suggest to the audience he's alive... naw, I'm not considering this a case of the writers going back on their word but rather carefully plotting a fakeout.

Hopper was one of the worst parts of this season, I can't understand what they were doing with his character, I wasn't expecting a lot, but jfc.

He's either stuck in the upside down or got teleported somewhere for some reason. The teleportation in Terminator was with blue lightning arcs, and boy were they leaning heavily on that nostalgia this season....

(Anonymous) 2019-07-16 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
No body, no death. And there were way too many moments of "Back to the Future" for it to be just nostalgia. Maybe Hopper has ended up in the past or the future?
