Lots of people have been bringing this up: what do you think about having the secret makers put the fandom in the image itself, rather than the name-the-fandom thread? Like a note at the bottom of the image (eta: or a note in the comment itself) that says:

fandom: Dr. Who, or fandom: House, or fandom: fanfiction/fanart/rp, or fandom: Pokemon/Twilight Crossover with a Bella the Bellsprout and her sparkly vampire virgin pikachu boyfriend

I'd go into effect starting with the next subs post (so everything submitted this week is fine, don't worry). The first comment would still be there for repeats and stuff like that.

[Poll #1272473]

What if the fandom is so small, spilling it would reveal the maker's identity?
If they didn't want to name the fandom, they probably wouldn't name characters or anything, right? So if it were like "I ship this one character with this other one, but no one else does and I feel alone, but this fandom is so small everyone would know it's me // fandom: character shipping"? That could work.

Does the fandom tag have to be on the image itself?
On second thought, probably not. You could just include it in the comment you put the link in, and that would work, too!

I voted yes but I don't want it as a rule - more an advisement. I don't want to see secrets turned away because of not having it.

The same with me. I think a suggestion is better then a rule.

No; I just don't think it's necessary, sometimes people don't want to be found out, blahblahbkjfhg. If you DO do it, though, then I'd go with only encouraging it without making it a rule, like others have said.

[identity profile] mhari.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
how about people just stop with the stupid-ass color-coded arrows and "i think HE is hotter than HIM" and just name names in the secret to begin with?

why yes, I have a pet peeve.

[identity profile] atelierlune.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike the idea. I find secrets where pairings or characters have to be represented with colors, numbers or other anonymous placement systems because telling would be out the secret-maker annoying sometimes, but I believe it when people claim representing the fandom or preferred pairing(s) might out you and get you in trouble with people. That's why the secret is a secret, right? Why would you take that away from people?

Maybe just encourage people to name their own fandom? Requiring it would keep me for sure (and perhaps others) from posting much.

Personally, I enjoy the WTF are you talking about? game. If I don't recognize the fandom, chances are that pasting a label on it isn't exactly going to make me care more.

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, IAWTC. In fact, it'll probably just make me scroll past it faster. :/

[identity profile] callmejude.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What about the ones where the fandom is obvious already, like where the background is a picture of the book cover or movie poster etc.? I mean, I see it as a good thing for fandoms where the actors are commonly seen in other things or whatever, but things like Twilight, House, DW and Harry Potter are usually pretty self-explanitory.

I suppose it could be encouraged, but I don't think it should be a RULE. I kind of like the 'what fandom is it/guess the fandom' rule.

I like the challenge of figuring out which fandom it is.

I'd love that. I sometimes miss a post and if I read it a few days later and nobody identified the fandom I'm looking for, asking for it is probably pointless. Also, I think putting the fandom as text is better, since that makes it easier to look for specific fandoms.

[identity profile] x-x-mint.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I lost the game :(

[identity profile] x-x-mint.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted yes, I always have a hard time figuring out what fandom people are talking about.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-04 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
this had better not turn in to a rule, because I'm not doing it.

[identity profile] gyllespi.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, seems like that'd mean a lot of rejected secrets, like people said -- and personally, I like the name the fandom thread. Plus it seems like some of the aesthetic and fun of the secret would be lost. What about those ones that have "points for naming this fandom!" somewhere in them? It's removing some of the fun.

Also, given the number of fandoms that F!S mainly focuses on, chances are we'd get tired of seeing the same "fandom: house" "fandom: spn" "fandom: TWILIGHT~*~*~*~*" over and over again. :/

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it really that important we know what all the fandom is? Those who are curious can ask. I like the guessing game, and I think policing every secret to make sure it names it's fandom would be a tiresome chore very quickly.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-04 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely. At least for smaller fandoms. Stuff like Bleach, Doctor Who, The Dark Knight, Supernatural, etc it would be unnecessary since even if you don't watch the series you can recognize it.

The name the fandom thread doesn't work most of the time because people often only name known series. I don't need to be told that secrets #5, #29, #43 and #54 is Death Note, while secrets #2, #6, #38 and #69 is Torchwood. I need to know what that interesting looking manga/anime/video game is that probably no one besides the secret maker can name.

[identity profile] gyllespi.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So... you can ask for it on the name the fandom post? Chances are if the secret-maker's looking for responses, they can come by and help you out. It's worked for me a couple of times, anyway!

Having read thru this, I qualify my vote: If it would be in ANY way uncomfortable for ANYone, then no, no ID on the images. I voted for ID only because it would make the thread more fun/comprehensible for casual reading, but, most certainly, that's not a goal to be favored over anyone's reputation or peace of mind.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2008-10-04 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea. Another thing to think about could be to ask people to submit the name of the fandom in their submission comment, and then when you post each batch of secrets, you strip the fandom name off the comment and make a list of fandoms that you would append to the bottom of each day's post. This would help in searching (e.g., I know there was a Prison Break secret posted last week, so I can just open each day's post in a tab and do a quick ctrl+F for "Prison Break," rather than wait for all the images to load and scroll through), but if people wanted to keep their fandoms more obscure, there wouldn't be anything connecting each actual secret to the name of the fandom.

If this sounds nutty, I am on pain medication right now. XD

Damn good idea! I second this!!

But rather than appending it, just make a tabs list or a separate comment for it. But damn good idea anyways.

I agree with those saying 'don't make it a rule, but encourage the practice of putting the fandom on the secret.'

It's when the secret isn't really a secret anymore that sort of... I dunno, violates the spirit of the community--and what happens when the secret doesn't HAVE a fandom per se, or the fandom is an actor who's really fucking obvious? Or when someone lists eighty million fandoms and says 'I loved all of these but now I finally have an OTP in THIS fandom?' That's a lot of pixel real estate to be taking up.

ps. I'm assuming that when the fandom is on the graphic, the text is unnecessary? Y/Y?

If it isn't a rule, then it's pointless.

Encouragement doesn't go too far on the internet. The "name-the-fandom" thread is a good example. It started off well when it first began but now anyone rarely ever posts anything other than listing the repeats. People are lazy. In then end, the only secrets that get named would be the obvious ones if any.

I say, force people to name the fandom, however keep the list separate. And then using either tabs or a separate comment or post have the names randomly listed without telling which secret they go to. That way those who truly want to know the fandom can do their research using the internet. And those who don't care can ignore. And the secret-maker doesn't have to be compromised.

label the ones that have a picture with them, which people could identify if they actually had seen the movie/show in question, if you want to be completely secret and are using stock photos/blank backgrounds keep on doing what you're doing with no label.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
No. No. No. It takes away the anonymity for bnfs of large fandoms, individuals in small fandoms, rp lesbians, etc etc motherfucking etc. If the secret poster doesn't name it, and no one knows then that's that, so it was meant to be. Isn't the point to spill your secrets without the risk of your identity being figured out? Don't make it easier.

No.

[identity profile] shoe-bug.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like a good idea to me. There's been way too many times where I've wanted to know the name of something but no body would bring it up in the 'name the fandom' thread. It'd be nice to not have to dig through pages of comments to find the name.

However, I think it should be something that is more encouraged than forced. If someone decides to withhold the fandom name, post the secret anyway.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think anyone who says no is a troll.

(Anonymous) 2008-10-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think you're a troll. Either that or you're only in mainstream fandoms.

[identity profile] stellarabyss.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I voted 'yes'. There have been tons of times when I've seen a secret and would have killed to know the name of the fandom but it's never named.

It doesn't have to be a rule. But it should at least be encouraged a little.

[identity profile] asphyxiational.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's good idea!

[identity profile] wllw.livejournal.com 2008-10-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeeaaaah, I think that if you make this a rule, there'd be more secrets in the text at the end than in the post itself. Besides, the secret poster might have reasons for not specifying the fandom.

I'd say encourage it, like mentioning it in the submission posts, but I think that actually implementing a rule like this would be really bad idea and impractical for pretty much everyone. It's not that hard to ask someone what fandom it is.
