Comments and crit on fanfic

(Anonymous) 2019-07-29 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a discussion about how fandom is going "too far" by the mere statement that you should only post crit if it's asked for. Why is this a bad thing? To be honest it just seems like being courteous. this complaint just seems like it comes from some "well akshully" type who needs to be noticed.

and fwiw I only delete negative comments if it's nothing but being rude and insulting or it's complaining about the presence of something that was already mentioned/tagged. Like if someone complains about how the fic would be better if it were this ship or saying "thats not canon" when its obviously/tagged AU.

What's your opinion on this?

A community I was once in had a tagging system in place where authors could mark what level of crit they wanted.

One tag would indicate that the story was just for fun and the author didn't care about making it any better than it was so crit was unneeded. Another would indicate that constructive feedback would be okay but be nice. Another would indicate the author was completely open to crit.

I'd always spam the "crit the fuck out of me pls" tag on serious fic, and "who gives a shit lol" on crack fic.

I think the presence of a system like that streamlined things greatly. Nobody was confused about how feedback would be received. Many an author got the crit they wanted or the didn't get crit they didn't care for, and many a reviewer was saved the trouble of putting time and effort into giving serious feedback on a fic the author didn't care about.

The only rude thing to do would be to ignore the author's tag.

I think if the author has asked for crit, they should get *constructive* crit. If they don't ask, then tread lightly.

If they say 'please no crit' than control yourself and don't. It's not that hard.

I always used to try to give constructive criticism when reviewing, but over the years I've just stopped it completely. I'm not sure I've seen people ask for no criticism specifically, but even when an author does ask for it, I always hold back because part of me is afraid of offending someone.
People are a lot more sensitive it seems, but I respect it if people ask for no criticism whatsoever. It's pretty stressing to post fic in itself, imo, so it might be an anxiety thing. Otherwise, they might not care to improve their writing, so they might add 'no crit' just to save people from wasting their time. (some people might eve just generalize crit as flaming too, even when it's not)

I've seen people who've run into trouble when an author solicits "honest feedback" and then pitches a fit if it's not 100% positive, but for the most part* it's not that hard to not leave crit.

*If the fic is posted in the wrong place, or horribly mis-tagged, or there's surprise Nazi vore in the middle of it, then all bets are off.

Short version? There is no pan-fandom culture.

I don't mind (metaphorical) you telling -your- audience how to respond to -your- story in -your- forum/comments/discord/whatever. It's your right, and your responsibility to define and announce and enforce your rules for your spaces.

I do mind when the commenter gets yelled at for violating unwritten rules.

I do mind that complaints get blasted for existing at all, when it's in a different space.

And how fucking dare anyone else play mod in -mine-.
