Hmmm, that's odd because arranged marriages cover a pretty wide historical period. I don't think I've read any Regency era ones, but then I rarely read Regency era novels...

Anyway, have you tried Elizabeth Chadwick? Medieval settings featuring historical figures, some well known (like William Marshall) and some more obscure. They're historical romance, with decent emphasis on the historical.

My husband and I were just talking about this today! ATLA included a lot of very mature subjects and concepts for a show originally aimed at 7 year olds. Imperialism, genocide, slavery, last of race/species, it was really very complex. I think that is why coming into it during the second season around age 30 I didn't laugh it off like I did other animated shows.

I agree that the dialogue was by far the biggest issue. I think there were also weird things with the plot (most notably, things like Anakin's age). And I definitely agree that there's all kinds of really cool, interesting, thematic stuff in the prequels that would have been good if it was executed well.

The only thing I disagree with is, the problem wasn't (mostly) (IE, for everyone except Hayden Christiansen) that the actors lacked presence, it was that the words were bad.

I'm imagining this chit chat happening over the phone...like an old fashioned rotary. Galadriel's would be a fancy white and mithril one, maybe she'd have a glass of wine on hand. Gandalf's would be one of those heavy bakelite affairs, cradling the earpiece on his shoulder while he's filling his pipe...

Oh gosh, this makes me glad I don't read fic for ST, I'd go mad. There's a lot of variety in 80s music and different characters would have different favorites... and very different opinions about what's cool!

I said this the last time this came up. The stage costumes, while a little too garish for my tastes, are still obviously people dressed up to kind of look like cats and my imagination can fill in the rest.

Whereas the film just looks like Island of Dr Moreau realness and is very unsettling. Made worse by the fact that it doesn't even look like they made much effort with the "join" in the special effects and I can't stop seeing the comments about it looking like that one part from What We Do In the Shadows.

I didn't mind her, but I thought she was under-utilized and I hated the whole love triangle thing. There wasn't enough time to develop it, which made it worse.

Mmmm... he looked pretty good, but sometimes the super exaggerated acting made me laugh at scenes that weren't supposed to be funny.
