As a writer and a D&D player who does neither of those things...I can't say as I see a difference? It's still fiction either way.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-27 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
... not OP, but isn't the difference that if you see a story with content you'd prefer to skip, you can't; with RP you're stuck in the room/the group and can't opt out?

Though, otoh if stuff happens and you don't speak up at the time or later to the DM ...

NAYRT

with RP you're stuck in the room/the group and can't opt out?

In a good group, this definitely shouldn't be the case at all. An RP group that doesn't respect everyone's ability to opt out is a much, much bigger problem than dealing with dark themes.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-27 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
For sure.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
But the OP says they're fine with all other media like that and they don't specify that they're uncomfortable with their RP partners specifically doing that--just people RPing it in general.

da

That's a good reason not to game with people who enjoy a darker tone to their RP, or not to join that villain game people you otherwise enjoy RPing with are starting up. It's not a good reason to make moral judgements about the people themselves.

Also, agreed with the commenter above - if you have a good group, you can opt out of content you're not comfortable with. Whether that means that content is cut from the game, you're given warning to leave the room if something might touch on your squicks, or you're written out of that game but still invited to the next one that won't touch on the shit you dislike depends on the group and the specific game, but there are definitely escape valves.

It depends on exactly what kind of game you're playing. Different people approach RPGs in different ways - the idea that an RPG involves creating a group fiction together is only one way of understanding them.

As a writer, I might put myself into the headspace of someone doing those things, but I do it in private. It's a secret, it's shameful, it's not something to be shared or proud of. If you're in a face-to-face roleplaying scenario and someone is comfortable putting themselves in that role in front of other people, they may as well be waving red flags. So yeah, I can tell the difference.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-27 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if they're doing it out of the blue or nobody else wants to go there, though? In specific situations, sure, there are lots of red flags for RPers and gamers and fondness for that kind of thing IS one of them, but OP seems to be making a blanket statement for EVERY situation, which is what confuses me.

Like, the cast of Critical Role for instance is okay with getting pretty darn dark in public in an RPG setting and I would never say any of them are waving red flags.

Sincerely, not trying to be catty: you should work on your self-loathing.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-28 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
... why is it shameful? You aren't your character. There's nothing shameful about writing about a fictional character doing fictional things as part of a larger story.

(Anonymous) 2019-10-28 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
it's completely bizarre and unhealthy to feel such shame about writing characters who do bad things, it is fiction

(Anonymous) 2019-10-28 09:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, so people can't play horrible villains that people love to hate, got it.
