I fully believe that you can be at your perfect weight and unhealthy. I also believe that you can be overweight and healthy. I 100% do NOT believe that you can be (morbidly) obese for a longer time and healthy and I side-eye everyone who says otherwise.
(Ofc that also doesn't mean that obese people should be looked down at or treated like less of the person they are.)

I agree with this. And I'm obese. there have been a lot of factors that have gone into it. It isn't all just food and lack of exercise. Some health issues I have plus some medications I have taken over the years plus my self-medication my mental health conditions have all lead to my weight. But I know it isn't healthy. I've been losing weight recently due to a new med I'm on, and it makes me happy. I feel healthier, I feel better.

I mean, there is a reason why the fat people movement has gone in the direction it has. But it isn't helpful. Saying anything is healthy is not the solution. the solution is to say people get to make their own choices. the solution is to say that 1. health is not a value judgment and that someone's weight isn't a comment on their merit as a person and 2. many factors go into weight, not just food in exercise out and 3. there really is discrimination and judgment against fat people that needs to be called out and stopped.

I've certainly had bad doctors who've blamed everything on my weight (shout out to all the gynecologists over the years who blamed my bad periods on my weight so I didn't get diagnosed with endometriosis until I was 33). And I've certainly been told by people over the years that my worth as a human being is less because I'm fat and ugly.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to lose weight. Or that wanting to lose weight is wrong. Or that the weight I'm at is healthy. Because it isn't. I'm getting better, slowly. I've made real progress the past few months (thank you, Topamax). I'm never going to be skinny, but I think I can reach healthy fat. I'm not there yet.

honestly i want to tear my hair out when i see people online trying to claim that being extremely obese doesn't negatively affect your health at all, because it's just not true. being too fat can cause you serious health problems, just like how being too skinny can cause you serious health problems.

the issue is all the bullshit that gets spread around that being stick-thin is some 'ideal' weight when in reality each person has their own personal healthy weight, and that the range of that healthy weight will vary inside a surprisingly large margin. the trick is finding what's best for you, not going off a 'one size fits all' template that can't possibly be used on every single individual because all our bodies are different.

saying all this though: fuck anyone who's nasty to obese people because of that fact, what you look like should never determine your worth as a person.

ngl but I honestly think (as a morbidly obese person who is working on losing weight) that a lot of the people who say that mostly say it as a defensive reaction again people having been shitheads to them their whole life.

I've definitely used that line on my mom (who'd make pig noises at me if I ate one sandwich AND NOTHING ELSE a day while I was a teen) and it was less about really believing and and more about wanting her to back the fuck off).

To this day, my mom and I can't talk about my weight civilly because she can claim it's for my health all she wants but I know she just doesn't want a fat daughter.

Yup. I agree. And, honestly, it took a while before I personally could even think about my own weight without it being a trigger for my mental health issues because of all the baggage from all the bullying and comments I'd received about it over the years. Even just thinking about my weight was enough to send me into a spiral of self hatred. It has only been recently that I've been able to start thinking about it in a more positive way as I'm learning to think of myself in a positive way (seeing a therapist, and we're working on self care).

I somewhat agree with this but I'm also tired of how many people suddenly become super concerned about how healthy someone else is the moment they dare to be fat and not filled with self loathing over it. Post a glamour shot of a hot girl smoking a cigarette and no one says a word. Post a video of a skinny model with their ribs showing and it's nothing but praise in the comments. Post a video of a fat girl saying she looks good and suddenly the comments are filled with 'OMG but your HEALTH!!!' concern trolls. I just have trouble taking anyone seriously who claims to be worried about the health of others when that concern coincidentally only gets vocalized in terms of weight.

This, but I also get sick of doctors claiming that every health problem I’ve ever had is weight related. Do skinny people with the same issues get told to lose weight? No? Then give me the advice and treatment you’d give them. When I finally convinced my doctor that I exercise more than most people and know what goes into a healthy balanced diet, it was like he didn’t know what else to do.

This is true. My endometriosis was diagnosed for years because every doctor assumed my issues were only because of my weight. When in fact if anything it was the other way around and the endo was probably causing some of my weight issues.

Being obese is a health risk, but someone who is obese can absolutely be otherwise healthy - and someone who's obese and sick is not necessarily sick because they're obese. One of the major reasons fat activists push the idea of health at every size is because doctors will frequently take one look at a fat person and diagnose them with being fat without ordering any of the tests that would be ordered if a thin person came in complaining of the same symptoms.

Sure, they can for a little while and yes, not every illness stems from beign obese but our joints were not made for this. You can't sustain your health over a long period of time and there is just no way around it.

Agreed. Even if you don't have hypertension or diabetes or any of those things, you're still putting an unhealthy amount of strain on your body because human beings are not physically designed to be carrying around that much weight. It wrecks your joints, for one thing - I know someone who had to have a knee replacement because they were so fat that they irreparably damaged their knee joints just by being that heavy. It's just not healthy, full stop.
