11 is the best Doctor. 10 is the worst Doctor. First one is a more common opinion. But the second one is a very unpopular opinion. But he's just too human to me and there are other things about him that bug me. I like him okay, but he's my least favorite. He works best with Donna, who calls him out on his crap.

13 is one of the best Doctors. That also seems an unpopular opinion? I love her.

I think Twelve is the best Doctor, but I do love Thirteen. Ten does work best with Donna, but I'm not gonna lie, Ten is my second favorite Doctor. Eleven is actually my least favorite. I don't hate him or even dislike him, but he kinda irritates me sometimes.

I totally get that. That's kind of how I feel about 10. Don't hate or dislike him, but he just bugs me sometimes. 12 and 13 are tied for second favorite for me. 4 would be third.

I don't like Molly Weasley

I don't hate her. But she's definitely not a favorite, and there are a lot of things about her that bug me. Actually, there are a few things about Arthur that bug me too. Honestly, the Weasleys just didn't seem like this ideal to me that JKR wanted them to be.

HP (like, as a fictional universe) has the problem that JK started from a lot of stock characters and simple formulae, and some of the traits of those stock characters didn't really mesh well with the later stories adding depth and complexity.
Indeed, some of the stock characters didn't mesh well with the original lot of tropes, if a reader thought about it too long - Harry Potter is an abused orphan who lived in a cupboard for years because Tragic Orphan with Cruel Family has Great Destiny, but Albus Dumbledore the Very Powerful Old Wizard is at once Caring Mentor who Knows All and also never did anything about the abuse because... whoops, we forgot to crosscheck our tropes.
Molly Weasley is a warm maternal figure because Harry needs a warm maternal figure to pop into the story occasionally and remind the reader what he's missing out on, but she's also a nag who doesn't listen to her children when they tell her stuff like "Harry was literally imprisoned in his room, they locked him in and put bars on the windows" because Nagging Mothers Are Funny. The Weasley's are poor because Goodhearted Poor Family With 20 Children is a staple of British literature, but... does the wizarding world not have birth control? How are they poor anyway? Can't they fix all their broken shit with magic? How *does* the magic economy work? So many questions!

nayrt

JKR does tell us how flawed they are, but she's writing them from Harry's perspective.

I think that's unpopular most places but popular here.

Personally I think that Molly and the Weasleys are good and people here focus too much on their flaws, but life's life.

I agree. They're flawed people, yes, but who isn't?

Re: Unpopular fandom opinions

(Anonymous) 2019-11-07 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I mean, yeah, it's possible they act super shitty when Harry isn't looking, but "OMG SHE THREATENED TO PUT BARS ON THEIR WINDOWS" as though that makes her the worst mom in the world, and no other parent in existence has ever made a threat they said in the heat of the moment and never actually carried through with.

I'm just tired of this "well, they aren't 100% polar opposite of the Dursleys, therefore they can't be seen as good people or good parents" attitude. Good people can and do fuck up and it doesn't make them suddenly not good or irredeemable.

I never liked her either.

I think both Russell T. Davies AND Stephen Moffat were extremely overrated as Doctor Who showrunners.

I'd argue that RTD is probably underrated as a showrunner, in the sense that criticisms of him mostly have to do with his writing. The problems aren't really with the production, where I think he did a titanic, extraordinary job.

That I'd disagree with. I'd say he did a great job in terms of restarting the show. But I think he had flaws as a showrunner, not just as a writer. I just preferred Moffat's style more and think he did a better job. And I'm also really enjoying Chibnell's style too.

7 is the best Doctor and Andrew Cartmel is the best showrunner / script editor

I preferred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker to Tobey Maguire. It's not that I think the Amazing Spider-Man movies were good. They weren't. I just really dislike Raimi's style, really hated a lot of things about the original three movies, and can't stand almost everything about Tobey Maguire's Peter. He's such a sad-sack butt monkey and it's just too much for me. I'm usually a very empathetic movie-watcher, but at a certain point, if the writing is bad, my empathy fucks off and I'm left with contempt and annoyance.

Tiny fandom, but I think Simon from In the Flesh is kind of a jerk.

YES. I don't hate him or anything, but there were times that I just wasn't sure about him.

As an addition: I don't think Kieren was in love with him by the end of season 2. Liked him, sure. But not love yet. And honestly he kind of deserved better

Halloween (2018) was not very good. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later was a pretty good follow-up to Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (which was not a terrible follow-up itself). And lop off the last few minutes of Halloween H20 and it would have moved from pretty good to great.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines was not awful, though it could have done a lot more with all of its potential.

I think Thor makes for a good side character, but I don’t care about the movies that focus on him. I’m sort of indifferent to the Guardians, too.

MCU is the McDonald's of cinema.

That's harsh on MCU.

Actually, no, that doesn't quite capture my point.

That's not harsh enough on McDonald's

Whenever people say they preferred Mariah Carey before the Daydream era and that they can't stand her since then, all I hear is "I liked her when she was white." Oh, and "I believe every stupid rumor and news story that paints her in a bad light, and automatically assume that if there is any buzz about her, that it must be because she did something crazy on account of that bitch being crazy because I can't be bothered to verify sources or think for myself what actually happened."

Sports would be a lot more interesting if the referees used party blowers rather than whistles.
