Sai is not a kid, so he can't be dependent on Hikaru for the rest of his life. That means that he needs to be able to function in a society on his own. I guess in a short fic addressing things like that won't be necessary, but in a long fic those issues will come up sooner or later.

I swear I'm not saying this to start wank, because I know how defensive House fandom can be, but maybe they like The Mentalist better because, while yeah House was first, at least the main character isn't a complete fucking asshole like House and the characters actually learn and grow each episode instead of it being a "same shit, different day" situation every week. 140. I haven't read it for a few years, but the only thing that feels wrong there is that Lenny isn't really an adult, mentally speaking. Still, they could have an incredibly close and loving relationship, but I'm not sure it could ever be a relationship of equals, if you see what I mean.
