(The following comments have not been approved by ontogenesis, and although I am speaking as a beta, I'm not doing so on ontogenesis's or her story's behalf.)

As the picture used is from artwork created by the original mangaka and colored by tininess specifically for the story Desynchronisation by ontogenesis, I feel I must weigh in. Full disclosure: I am one of the two betas, and I've been there since Day One (in fact, the story idea was first raised to me in person as we were sitting in a cafe).

Japan does not use Social Security numbers. In fact, he hasn't done anything requiring proof of identity yet.

However, my knee-jerk reaction aside, if you have specific details/instances where the story has broken realism and you think ID has to be produced no matter what, please, both of us would love to hear it. ontogenesis takes pains to make her fic as real as possible and notes when she departs from reality, and I try my best to make sure of it, too, so if you have any concerns about the story, please, talk to either of us. We're both approachable, and I hope the HnG fandom knows our individual reactions to giving/receiving concrit (always positive).

That piece of fanart is from some art site or google and I don't associate it with any particular story. I don't know if I've read that story because I don't remember the titles for any of the stories of that type I have read. This secret was meant for fics of that type in general, not for that particular story. Sorry for the confusion. :)

101: okay, let me get this straight. the premise of house is of a medical detective show - the writers have said their idea for it was a medical CSI. ie, putting a detective in a hospital. how, then, is a plain detective show that happened to be made after house a rip off of it? house is based on sherlock holmes, which the writers have said themselves. how can simon baker's character be a rip off of a character that's already a 'rip off' in your terms? it's the same sherlockian trope of the very clever, observant and somewhat anti-social detective that has been used in every second detective show ever, basically. if anything, the mentalist is a rip off of psych - almost exactly the same premise, in fact. but the mentalist is playing it seriously so far, so i like where it's going.

to summarize: this is network tv. chances are your favourite show isn't particularly original at all, let alone the only original show on tv. the premise of house isn't particularly original. it's the writing for each story that makes it good. so, until anyone can show me the mentalist, or any other show ripping off individual story lines from house, then i'm placing all the 'house is being ripped off!!1111' fans in my 'batshit' mental category.

Gosh, it's been ages. My family owns all the original videos, we used to watch them all the time. The hilarity definitely transcends religion. Coincidentally, "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" popped randomly into my head a few days ago, and I drove myself crazy trying to remember the lyrics.
