I agree. But then again, I think there is a lot less that qualifies as objective than a lot of people seem to want to insist. I think when it comes to media and fiction, most of it is opinion and subjective.

honestly, I agree

I like the sound of the song, though some of the lyrics were dumb. But the video really looked stupid to me. That color scheme was just awful.

To Go Ahead Or Not?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I did a little writing exercise for an old fandom of mine the other day, and it accidentally got long enough and decent enough to be considered a full fic in its own right. My friend says I oughta put it on AO3 with the others, but I'm still a little wary - I've been gone from it long enough that it might be weird, it might just be a one-off anyway, and the fandom itself, let alone the content of the fic, is a little... niche. But at the same time I don't wanna waste what little I've been able to accomplish this year. Should I go for it?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

I think you're being wildly unreasonably harsh

I don't think there's anything objective about it. We like what we like.

To me, complex means they have a range of sympathetic qualities and flaws. They don't fit neatly in a good guy/bad guy dichotomy. But that's just my definition and preference, and of course we all have a different idea about what makes a character complex.

Noah Hawley Star Trek

https://variety.com/2019/film/news/noah-hawley-star-trek-1203409795/

"'Fargo' and 'Legion' creator Noah Hawley has been tapped to write and direct the next installment of the 'Star Trek' franchise, sources tell Variety. Though plot details are being kept under wraps, sources tell Variety the next 'Star Trek' is expected to see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana returning to man the U.S.S. Enterprise... This will serve as the fourth movie in the cinematic series, and is separate from another 'Star Trek' pic that Paramount is developing with Quentin Tarantino producing and Mark L. Smith writing."

Yeeeeeeees.

On that note, how do you watch it? I can only get parts of it at the gym because I don't have a television plan

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, i do realize I used "(a) little" far too much in that. I'm not normally this bad, promise.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of agree, sort of don't agree.

I think that "complexity", specifically, actually is an objective concept. But I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with what OP is talking about - complexity doesn't inherently make a character good or interesting, and it definitely doesn't have anything to do with how much a person likes watching a character. Those are all totally subjective things.

What fandom?

Your insult betrays your point. You're the one who doesn't have close friends if you don't think that real friends aren't as close as your siblings. You may not literally live and die with them, but you're going to be with them forever. The fact that so many people dump their friends after getting an SO just goes to show how we treat people as disposable.

What makes a character objectively complex?

Okay, yes, I can agree with you. I can enjoy and think a character is good even if they aren't complex. Complex is nice, but it isn't everything. It is just one factor.

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Very true.

A lot of people don't want to read, they want to experience. So when you have deep worldbuilding and blank characters, it allows them to imagine that they're in the story. So they like it. Even if it's bad.

I pretty much agree with you about what makes for complexity, although that's exactly why I think it's more objective. It's not that hard to enumerate traits and classify them as flaws/strengths/other. Even if edge cases are hard to call, the specific criterion of "many, some of each" smoothes out some of the noise.

And I think what gets called "fascinating" or "compelling" is generally 1) those flaws and sympathetic qualities being in tension with one another, instead of just..there 2) those flaws and sympathetic qualities being connected/reflections/exaggerations of each other and 3) a particular suite of flaws and sympathies being one I haven't seen a million times already.

I've mainly seen this in the Marvel movie fandom, which talks more about how they were expecting a found family and didn't get one.

Some of us will grow old and die with our friends in the same house. It doesn't mean that we don't all have lives, it just means that we don't have millions of dollars.

Having long-term housemates is not a weird TV myth. Sorry to say, but you may be the one who is out of touch, or possibly doing better financially or living in a less expensive area? Good for you, if so!

Even my friends with kids have housemates. You can be a real adult and share living space with other adults.
