To Go Ahead Or Not?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
So I did a little writing exercise for an old fandom of mine the other day, and it accidentally got long enough and decent enough to be considered a full fic in its own right. My friend says I oughta put it on AO3 with the others, but I'm still a little wary - I've been gone from it long enough that it might be weird, it might just be a one-off anyway, and the fandom itself, let alone the content of the fic, is a little... niche. But at the same time I don't wanna waste what little I've been able to accomplish this year. Should I go for it?

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, i do realize I used "(a) little" far too much in that. I'm not normally this bad, promise.

Write some more and only then post - one piece at the time. You don't want to get discouraged and stop writing)

Post it! I had been really soured on fandom for a while and then earlier this year, I had a random idea for a new fandom. I posted it, not expecting much, and I got some really nice responses.

Good luck! And have fun writing!

Go for it, Anon! Why not?

Re: To Go Ahead Or Not?

I'd say post.

Honestly, I'm currently in a fandom where people will post anything and call it a fic. They'll plunk out 200 words of mid-fuck daddy kink with zero characterization and slap it up on AO3 in a hot second. And as much as I'm a snob who silently rolls my eyes at them, they get kudos and comments and they seem to have fun with it. Which has really put into perspective for me that you don't need to write 5K - 200K of gorgeously structured plot and perfect characterization in order for it to be ok to post. The fact that you describe your fic as "long enough and decent enough to be considered a full fic in its own right" makes me think you probably have higher-than-necessary standards for your own fanfic (which is not remotely a criticism, for the record).

Unless you're in a really snobby fandom, other people in the fandom will probably just be happy someone wrote something for them to enjoy.

Noah Hawley Star Trek

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
https://variety.com/2019/film/news/noah-hawley-star-trek-1203409795/

"'Fargo' and 'Legion' creator Noah Hawley has been tapped to write and direct the next installment of the 'Star Trek' franchise, sources tell Variety. Though plot details are being kept under wraps, sources tell Variety the next 'Star Trek' is expected to see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban and Zoe Saldana returning to man the U.S.S. Enterprise... This will serve as the fourth movie in the cinematic series, and is separate from another 'Star Trek' pic that Paramount is developing with Quentin Tarantino producing and Mark L. Smith writing."

Wasn't he a child star? Drew Barrymore went to rehab before she was 13. Hollywood is a shitty, shitty place for younger people.

Does anyone use Kindle Unlimited?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-20 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
What do you read on it? Do you feel it's worth the money?

If you publish on it, I'd love to hear about your experiences.

I pirate everything. Actually it's almost time to pay for the books I pirated and finished on my Kindle this year...

If you just want it for reading, check to see if your local library is enrolled with Libby/Overdrive. Works great with Kindle.

I use it and definitely get my money's worth out of it. It helps that I mostly read what I call "brain candy", fun stories that aren't necessarily of the best objective quality. I tend to read mysteries, thrillers, and fantasy.

I use KU to read. It's worth the money the way I do it, because I pay for a month, read as much as I can, and then cancel the next month. Until I feel like doing it again.

I went grocery shopping today for minor shit like bread and eggs (and a 6 pack of Coronas lol) before my big Thanksgiving shopping day this Friday; I hate having to go to the grocery store during Thanksgiving week, don't you? It's so C R O W D E D. So I do my Thanksgiving dinner shopping the week before and put everything in the freezer. I saw that the bakery section had half pies for sale so I was going to get an apple and a pumpkin. Mmmm...pie....

In a lot of pain. So ready for Thursday's surgery. I had a lot of difficulty getting things done today and ended up cancelling one appointment today and one for tomorrow. I have a lot to get done before Thursday, though, so that is stressing m.

Hey, it's me, Stinky Coworker Anon from the other day, with an update on my situation!

My stinky coworker came up to me last Thursday and said that Saturday was his last day and he was going back to driving a truck for our company, he said that was what he really wanted to do and seemed pleased about it so I wished him well. Later on some other coworkers were talking (including the ones who complained to management about him/his smell) about it and one guy said can you imagine being stuck in the cab of a truck all day, every day, with stinky coworker (company policy states that there has to be 2 people in each truck). My manager said it wasn't going to be a problem because he was going to be put with Patterson. Patterson is a Gulf War veteran who lost his sense of smell in the war.

That's right.

So it all worked out for literally everyone, or at least it seems to have, knock on wood. Anyway. Just thought I'd update you all because it's a pretty good story, lol.

Late but I need to vent somewhere.

I screwed something up at work because I misunderstood something my boss said and now everyone is mad at me. I explained how I interpreted what was said/why I did it the way I did and apologized but it doesn't seem to matter, and when I tried to fix the situation I was told to "just forget about it" in an angry voice and not to do anything.

I've apologized, but they won't let me fix it and obviously I can't go back in time and do it differently so I'm not sure what I can do at this point to make everyone not mad at me and it's making me sad. :(
