Things that surprised you about new shows you're watching!

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I just started watching Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba after seeing a secret for it here, and... I am really enjoying it. That is not the surprising part. I'm a sucker for demon/shounen type animes.

What surprises me is that I love all the characters. Usually it's either the MC I dislike because the show pushes them up on this pedestal above all the others, or it's some of the side characters because at the expense of fleshing out the MC (and antagonist) they neglect to do anything substantial with anyone else and they become annoying one-trick shells.

BUT GUYS I LOVE EVERYONE! IT'S SO REFRESHING!

That the official title is "Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir", because I've only ever seen it referred to as "Miraculous Ladybug" and I think that goes some way to explain some of my non-surprise detailed below.

But I'm surprised that I like it at all, for starters. That I'd like it because I ship the teenage protags of a children's show that the show is REAL UNSUBTLE about, because I usually loathe those romantic dynamics.

What didn't surprise me until I sat down to think about it, is how focused it is on Ladybug as the heroine. Even if the title refers to both heroes, it's always Ladybug who saves the day and almost always Ladybug who is in the spotlight, and that definitely didn't have to be the case.

I just finished watching The Boys and it's much, much better than I was expecting. The way it was marketed it just seemed crass and macho and not much else. It is crass, and at least on the surface it's pretty macho. But it's also really smartly written, and surprisingly sensitively written. Like, it's a harsh world and people do awful things, but the narrative itself is quite thoughtful and nuanced in how it explores its characters and concepts.

Plus, it's surprisingly good in how it handles its female characters and the misogyny and abuse and specific difficulties they face. I was expecting a rampant case of Men Writing Women Horribly but I was honestly impressed by how believable and real-feeling all the female characters were.

I've been watching three new shows lately.

All Rise: honestly, I'm surprised I like it as much as I do. The commercials didn't look like my kind of thing at all, but it's way better than I expected. I love the relationship between the leads...I do sort of ship them, but I also appreciate their friendship because a platonic relationship between M/F characters with no 'will they-won't they' subtext is super rare. I also love that the good guys pretty much always win. It's not realistic in the slightest, but reality kind of sucks right now so I'm enjoying it.

Prodigal Son: it's much darker than I expected for a non-cable show and much more interesting than I expected. I'm pleasantly surprised by the pacing, too. A lot of times in mystery type shows things are revealed so slowly that it drags out and I just get bored. But even though we still know very little in the grand scheme of the story, they've done it in a way that hasn't been boring, at least in my opinion.

Evil: the show overall just isn't really what I expected. I don't know what I expected, but it's...weird. I saw reviews that compared it to the X-Files, and I personally don't find it at all similar. It's just strange, and kind of hard to describe, and I'm oddly intrigued by it.

I've been watching Prodigal Son and am also pleasantly surprised by the pacing. I was NOT expecting the pivot away from Murder of the Week cases into the Junkyard Killer arc, and it's been really fun to watch everything unfold.

Ah, I've been loving Prodigal Son too! I kind of meh'd out of Evil after 4 or 5 episodes, it just didn't hit enough interesting buttons for me.

Best OC Centric Fic

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm writing an OC centric fic myself about an American Muggleborn being a pureblood wizard's wife during a time when a Malfoy presides as the President of MACUSA.

It got me curious. What are some good OC centric fanfics? If you're coming here to be negative though don't bother. I'm already going to write it regardless.

The only one I've liked was a BDSM universe fic that probably wasn't that great but I loved it.

I feel like I usually like canon!OCs more than straight-forward OCs? Like where a minor character essentially gets turned into an OC. It's just hard for me to buy an entirely new character coming into the canon, I guess.

Eh...personally I feel like in some worlds it's fun to explore the greater world outside the specific setting of the canon. But it's a personal taste thing. :)

I can probably dig up a few good OC fics where they encounter the canon characters, because that's one of my favorites, but I don't think I've read any where it's just the OC and the world, if that makes any sense?

People Christmas shopping

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you stay in budget or spend too much like I did?

Re: People Christmas shopping

(Anonymous) 2019-12-15 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I was over by a tiny bit, but not much. I've been using ynab.com for a couple of years now and it's helped me a LOT. Only reason I put any of my Christmas shopping on credit this year was the chip in my debit card crapped out today while I was at David's and I had to use my VISA lol.

I didn't really budget, but I have some idea about how much I'll spend on different people. I've stayed within that, mostly.

I don't really budget, but I only shop for my parents and my brother, and I usually get a joint gift for my parents. I usually aim for no more than $100 per gift, so no more than $200 total.

Budget? What budget? In other words, yeah, I overspent and still have things to buy/make for people. But I’m not destitute from it and I don’t have many people to buy stuff for anymore—I have one close friend and two living blood relatives, and one of my uncles is so well off that there’s nothing he wants that I could buy him and asked that we stop giving gifts years ago—he’ll be in the south of France through the new year.

My other uncle usually gets gag gifts (a flip book Jurassic Park spoof and a set of weird magnetic paper dolls this year) and he and my aunt’ll be getting a down comforter and portable phone chargers. My aunt collects air plants so I got her a big one and I’ll make her a batch of fudge. My oldest pseudo-cousin is getting Star Trek stuff and an Amazon giftcard.

I didn’t used to buy my younger pseudo cousins anything because I only rarely saw them, but since I’m making more money and their parents have had me over for holiday dinners since my mom died, I’ll probably get them gift cards too. The rest of their family will get fudge if they want it.

My oldest friend is getting a bunch of stuff—kitchen knives, a Legend of Zelda umbrella, a bunch of Shakespeare stuff, a banned books mug, fancy glass goblets, and an overflowing stocking full of novelty socks, lip gloss, fancy chocolate, and random nerdy gag gifts that started as a tradition when I took over making stockings from my mom.

I also bought myself stuff—new boots, a dragon coffee mug, my own stocking stuffers—because I usually only get a couple things from my friend and some gift certificates from my aunt and uncle for practical stuff like pet food.

Bronchitis is the worst

Any remedies for horrible dry cough? I I have absolutely 0 discharge but the coughing turns into dry heaving after a few minutes.
Going to the doctor as soon as they open, but what to do until then?!

Something with dextromethorphan.

Cepacol cough drops have benzocaine in them, which will numb your throat for a while, and you can get them without a prescription.

Best of luck w/ the doctor + getting better! Bronchitis is a real bitch.
