They're not communicating directly to the author, as commenters on fanfic are--as long as they're not, say, going into Harry-centric communities and bashing him, why does it matter to you? And also, you don't have to like the main character to love a work (personally, Harry just doesn't overly interest me).

I didn't like "Moulin Rouge" - the plot, the music style, the message and so forth just weren't my particular cup of tea - and while I admire that they tried their darnedest to make all those songs fit together coherently, I don't think they entirely pulled it off.

But I disagree with you so much.

Firstly, someone *can* like Moulin Rouge, and be a musical theater fan, without thinking of MR as a musical: if someone likes MR as a romcom, why would you lose respect for them? Everyone has a right to like what they like without being judged for it like that.

And, secondly, what's wrong with treating it as a musical in the first place? As far as the songs go, "Mamma Mia!" is considered a musical, and I don't think any of its songs were original - at least Moulin Rouge arranged its entire score, there was some creative effort there.
And musicals do not have to originate onstage to be musicals: as long as the piece features song, and the majority of the plot and characterization are conveyed through the medium of song and dance, frankly that makes the thing a musical. Moulin Rouge, whatever anyone's opinions of its plot or kooky camera angles, qualifies as a musical.

I see where you're coming from - I die inside whenever anyone says they like the High School Musical franchise, and for that matter in my head I like to insist that they don't count as musicals - but the fact of the matter is that I could never responsibly mistake that feeling for an actual, empirical truth, or anything I could actually judge people for.

148: The only thing I know about that particular pronunciation is that geas, the originating word for that is Celtic, and pronounced gees. Like geese, except the s is softer and shorter. Um. Oh, like bees except with a g. I ended up learning from a car trip where my dad was talking about not being able to find words in any dictionaries.

For the record, a geas is basically a taboo thing, like having a geas not to eat meat and eating meat would result in Bad Things, usually death. They're very personal. And everything I know about Code Geass I learned from this place.

101. Chiming in to say I know how this feels. Especially with big 'verses like Star Wars, Harry Potter or Doctor Who, I find that moment of realization incredibly painful.

Doctor Who was the worst of those, I think, because I'm too old to really play "pretend" in a way I once could with, say, Star Wars, but DAMN I'd like the Doctor to show up and get me the hell off this rock. And take me somewhere ELSE in the universe.

102. I think you worded this a bit poorly. The way it stands, it reads as if you're saying that your positive feedback is a secret. Heh. I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant.

But anyway. I'm a virgin too, and I always figured that I'd be too shy to write porn. Much to my surprise, when I FINALLY sat down to attempt it, I found it ridiculously easy to write. Why I ever thought I'd be shy at writing porn I don't know, except, well, isn't everyone? But damn, the filthy smut just flows. I've not posted any of it yet, but I generally have a very good idea of the kind of feedback I'll get for something, and I think it'll be well-received.

Between that and the recent discovery that I find it similarly easy to talk dirty (which I'm sure helps the porn), I've come to the conclusion that writing porn depends more on general writing ability AND an ability (or rather, a willingness) to talk about sex - neither of which are dependent on actual sexual experience. And plenty of people WITH sexual experience have problems with one or the other of those things, if not both.

133. I KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL. Don't recognise the fandom, but if I find out that two actors in one of my fandoms are together, and they have a kiss together or whatever...ACK. It entirely shatters the illusion of fiction. I feel like I'm watching a, um, private moment. And if it's really hot, I can't help but think, "They're um, actually aroused, aren't they?" OH GOD. Squirm. I start thinking about their mutual technique and whatnot in a way that I never would if I were simply watching two fictional characters onscreen.

Porn doesn't bother me. But THAT sure does. Doing it for the camera is one thing, but I don't actually want to witness a moment from someone else's love life. Not so intimately, anyway.
