I'm not Japanese, but I watched it and they were careful to be respectful? Whether that was successful or not, I don't know. But the people they worked with seemed pleased with their efforts. Kiko Mizuhara was also there to explain parts of the culture, and they had a translator present.

And being non-white absolutely does not excuse you from being disrespectful to other cultures.

It sort of is. Companies make more of the things that make money, less of the things that don't make money. So when you choose to consume X and not Y, you're promoting the continuing existence of X and the extinguishing the existence of Y.

I mean, that's literally the point of boycotts.

That bottom picture and "cocky screw-up" really reminded me of Eric (The Cavalier) from the Dungeons and Dragons animated show, so I looked it up and the Toei did them both, which is interesting. But I will admit that while Eric was annoying at times, he could be weirdly endearing.

This is a huge problem with Star Trek fic, too. The TOS and AOS versions of the characters are not interchangeable, writers. They even exist separately in the same canon!
