Is there any particular piece of media that would genuinely cause you to question a person's judgment if they believed it was good? Note: thinking that something is good isn't the same thing as liking something.

Re: Inspired by 8

(Anonymous) 2020-01-07 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Media (of any type) is singularly subjective in the same way art is. I may not like Henry Moore's sculptures, but just because they don't do anything for me, doesn't mean they don't reach someone else for whatever reason.

I dunno. Birth of a Nation? Mein Kampf? Atlas Shrugged?

I'm blanking on examples right now because I'm tired, but if someone cited something that was filmed and created to be entirely exploitative/focusing on violence against women in order for male audience to get off as an example of good media, I'd very much question their judgment. Not necessarily something that just included that sort of thing because then you're talking a large portion of media. But something where it is just pervasive throughout the whole thing and/or it is clear the creator's intent wasn't to make good art, it was the "getting off on watching female bodies violated" part of it, but somehow audiences have decided it is a good movie anyway.

Actually, let's add torture porn movies in general to this mix. Don't care if any of them are supposdly "good" or "well-made." When the point of the movie is the violence and showing the audience that and getting them excited/enjoying it, it is not a good movie and I judge anyone who calls it good. There are maybe some cases and some reasons why someone might enjoy one of them (like, the same reason some people read stuff similar to what they went through for cathartic reasons), though I personally don't see how a movie (or tv, does that exist?) that violent and visceral right there on screen could have that effect).

I also sideye people who ignore the overt racism in a movie just because they think it is "good." It is one thing to say Gone With the Wind is well made, for example. But to say that because it is a classic and an artistic movie and "good" art, it doesn't matter that it is racist is another entirely.

Acknowledge it is racist, though perhaps a product of its time, and say you like it anyway or think it is a good movie in spite of that. That I don't take issue with. But pretending the racism isn't there or doesn't matter will make me question someone's judgment.

Yup. Like, don't know if that one is considered good in an artistic sense. Don't know if any torture porn movie is. But personally I don't think a movie where the entire point is to revel in and enjoy watching violence, torment, and gore can be considered good and I side-eye anyone who would call it good.

If there's not at least one thing that you'll stan for and love, in spite of everyone else in the world, you're probably not an interesting person.

Even with "problematic" media. Bannon's problem isn't that he likes xenophobic dystopian science fiction. Bannon's problem is that Bannon is an fascist asshole. And regardless, a bad taste in media doesn't make one a less competent mechanic, nurse, lawyer, or teacher.

Two years ago, I was extremely uncomfortable by some oscar bait arthouse film that had a suspicious age gap. Some of my former fandom friends tried to convince me that it was 'good' but I stopped being friends with them because I couldn't trust their judgement.

Bonus secret: How did I cope with this? I imagined Hayley Stark from Hard Candy befriend a boy, but when she finds out that he has an older 'friend', she gets rid of the older 'friend'.

Yuri on ice. Yeah, I know, and I specifically mean the difference between liking it and thinking it was good. There is a number of LIKEABLE things to it, but it's not a particularly good anime.

I never turn on lights when I'm alone in a room, unless I'm reading something non-electronic at night. I didn't used to think this was weird, but I've gotten some strange reactions from people who've found out. So I guess this is really weird? But during the day I can see just fine even with the blinds closed. And at night I have my pills all laid out, and there are rarely reasons I would need light beyond what is on my computer screen (which I keep dimmed using FLux).

I have sensitive eyes, always have. Too much light hurts. But I guess this is a weird habit that I've been told is unhealthy by some people?

This isn't a secret, I just want to complain...
Dear Charity Cold Callers,
I appreciate that you are trying to shake me down for a good cause - I mean, you only have my contact details because I've either given you money in the past, or I've signed some petition for you. Either way, I in some way support the work that you do. But for fuck's sake, when I say, "Sorry, I live on a government pension that's well under minimum wage, I give what I can, I can't give any more," and you say, "Oh, but how about you give just one dollar more a week-"
I hardly think you can complain that I hang up! You're lucky I don't just start cussing! Give it a goddamn rest!

TW: murder, self-harm, other related things

(Anonymous) 2020-01-07 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
This is all feelings and thoughts, not plans or intentions.

For a long, long time, I've had the mostly-irrational feeling that if I could just kill someone, just once, it would drain out a lot of the anger and stress that's been accumulating in me since childhood and only seems to keep building, never fading. Sure, the things I get angry and stressed about fade away, but the internal "bucket" doesn't drain out when its source goes away, just like water in a cup doesn't disappear when you turn off the faucet. It sort of makes sense to me, maybe in the same ridiculous way that part of me thinks that cutting myself would release emotional pain through the opening like a vapor (there are so, so many reasons I know that's a fucking stupid image, but it's the one my weird abstract mind keeps picturing).

Sometimes...this is so fucked up...I fantasize about killing a live shooter in a public place. That way, I wouldn't go to prison. And nobody would know how fucked up I am, how I actually wanted to bash someone's brains out just once in my life, because they'd all just think I was some kind of hero. I picture sneaking up behind a shooter in a grocery store with a frying pan and just swinging with all I've got. I'm sure if I were ever in that situation, I'd probably panic or die or both, but...it's a pleasant daydream, for me. It'd be the best of all worlds: I'd get to maybe vent 25 years worth of psychological pain, the victim would be someone who really deserved it, and I wouldn't have to worry so much about legal consequences.

Anyway...my therapist knows. She knows I want to kill someone. She also knows I won't. Wanting to isn't the same as having it in me to do it. (I think, if I were ever going to do it, it would have happened in high school, when my rage and impulse control were at their worst ever.) I'm grateful for her. I can tell her these thoughts, and she won't freak out, because she understands.

I called the doc like five times but the inbox is full since the took a break for the holidays and I don't know when they get back, and also because it's always fucking full!
Secret because I do this a fucking lot, and it's gotten to the point I'm not even bothered because who the fuck really cares really. (ANSWER: I do.)

Things you only like in specific pairings/fandoms/etc.

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-01-07 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any specific tropes, kinks, or whatever that you only enjoy reading with specific pairings or specific fandoms?

Re: Things you only like in specific pairings/fandoms/etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-07 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of hate that I'm so far down the Noctis/Prompto rabbit hole that I'm 100% good with mpreg with them, lmao. Only them, though! I'm not sure why, and I'm not sure why if I like it with one pairing I can't deal with it in others, but there we have it. ‾\_(ツ)_/‾

Also in general I really don't like enemies-to-lovers as a trope, but after betaing a fic of a friend of mine, I can't stop thinking about Adam/Eve/2B in a emotionally messed-up MFM threesome. Hoo.

Humiliation is usually very much a do not want kink. But it seems so in-character for Kylo/Hux that somehow I'm enjoying it, as long as it is coupled with the right balance of praise kink as well. Not sure how I suddenly enjoy one of my least favorite kinks ever. But I just read a PWP where Kylo is down on some planet in disguise because he's got a sex-work kink, and Hux finds him and takes full advantage, and goodness if it isn't one of the hottest things I've ever read in spite of being something I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole with any other pairing.

Re: Things you only like in specific pairings/fandoms/etc.

(Anonymous) 2020-01-07 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Internalized Homophobia for period type parings where it would make sense. Somehow even when I know certain writers are adverse to it I still get surprised when a paring from the 1890's are about to kiss for the first time/obviously in public without any hesitation.

There's also parings where I like to see them more aggressive/violent with each other. Specifically, Thiefshipping. They're both hardened criminals with their lives all but told for them, so I like to see it when they both let loose a little. It also suits their characters, imo.
I particularly hate to see this in any other kind of ship, so it's a very niche thing.
