Who is Grimes? Do they just have one name, like Madonna? Cause if so, they could've picked a better one...Grimes just sounds dumb.

The only Grimes I know of is Rick Grimes from TWD so for a brief second I was very confused.

Favourite Out Of The Box Dinners?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Literally, which boxed meals do you like the best? And do you spice them up in any way, or eat them as directed?

Re: Favourite Out Of The Box Dinners?

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I just ate some Hamburger Helper Stroganoff, and it is delicious! I alway want to try something different with it, but I like it too much to mess with it too much.

Other than that, Kraft Dinner is the one and only boxed meal for me! I'll eat it with ketchup and some hotsauce, or hotdogs, which isn't as bad as it sounds;;

I don't know? I don't really eat box dinners? Frozen and refrigerated but not boxed

IDK, maybe I'm missing out

I like some kinds of boxed (flavored) rice, though it's been a while since I bought any. I never dress them up though because for me an extra cooking step gets rid of the whole advantage of using a box.

Genuine questions, because I've been wondering

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Is the word "lame" still fine to use, or is it considered ableist now?

My personal opinion is that it should be fine. It's always been used way more about horses and arguments than about people anyways, so I really don't think calling something lame ought to be considered ableist.

But I'm curious what other people think, and whether anybody has seen it being asserted to be ableist.

Re: Genuine questions, because I've been wondering

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'd wager it's fine to use. It's understood as slang more than it's standard definition, and even in slang it is used properly in the way that it describes something is 'bad'. Like you wouldn't call someone with a bum leg lame, you call their leg lame, at least from what I've heard of the word.
Either way I can't see why people should be offended by it. No doubt there will be someone who's going to think it might offend someone, but I highly doubt it actually will.

Re: Genuine questions, because I've been wondering

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I would consider it very clearly ableist, to be honest. I just don't agree that it's been used more about horses and arguments than about people - I just don't think it's true. I don't think there's really an argument where you can say it's not ableist.

That said, it's not the kind of thing that I would really make a federal case over - I try to avoid using it myself, but I think certain forms of ableism are so deeply embedded in the language that there's not a lot of use to trying to actively socially condemn them. I'm sure some people would yell at me, but I just think it's a matter of degree, I guess.

My disabilities are mental, so I don't get a say, but my father is physically disabled in very much the way people might describe as 'lame' (he fucked his knee in a car accident and now it doesn't bend), and he thinks that policing people's language so they don't say mean things about the poor cripples is pretty much the absolute least important thing for disability advocates to be worrying about.

Late venting, feel free to join in!

Just venting don’t mind me

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I left work early today; this is my second bout of cold/flu crud since October, even though I got my flu shot. I napped when I got home, woke up freezing and sweat-soaked, and made a grocery run so I can hide in bed when I (sigh) call in sick tomorrow.

I’m currently wearing sheepskin boots and head to toe wool including three sweaters, and still shivering. ... I live in southern California. It’s 56 degrees fahrenheit out. I don’t have heat and the wiring isn’t up to a space heater, but it’s still probably warmer than that in my house. My fuzzbeast cat is on my lap which is under a blanket pile. I had some tea, which helped, but every time I shed the blankets and cat to go to the bathroom I feel like I hiked to Siberia in winter.

Immune system, I try and feed you fruit and veggies and whole grains and this is the thanks I get? If I switch to the Cookie Monster diet, will you do your job?

When I see those posts about introverts supposedly feeling sorry for themselves because their friends won't let them be alone with a book I want to scream, because I would LOVE to have some friends who would invite me places. Sitting alone with a book gets old fast when you don't have any choice about it. To me "Oh, my friends keep pressuring me to go places" is like saying "People keep depositing money in my bank account and it's such a pain in the ass."

Firefly

(Anonymous) 2020-01-09 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
So apparently there are rumours going around that Firefly might be getting a reboot or another shot or something, and I'm... less than ecstatic? I loved Firefly when it first came out, and Serenity too, but even as a young teen I could see some of the problems. In the years since, I've lost a lot of respect for Joss Whedon, and Adam Baldwin is just a douchebag.
Really, I think I'd only be interested if they kept the core concept and swapped out the writers, directors, producers, most of the cast... maybe brought back a few of the original cast for the occasional cameo - Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Jewel Staite... But at that point, you might as well call it something else that just references Firefly a bunch, you know?
