Inspiration media

Do you have any media you find inspiring? Not necessarily your favorite media, but media you find inspiring in some way.

Inspired by my current Judging Amy rewatch. That's the show that is my favorite law show and it is the one that I watch when I need job inspiration. It is the show that made me pick law in the first place. It isn't a top 10 favorite show, though it is good. But it is the show that reminds me that I can do some good as a lawyer and that it is worth it.

I played FFXV for the first time around the same time that I was getting really frustrated with my supposed inability to cook, so Ignis' recipes really, really inspired me. I went full Julie & Julia on it and attempted to create every recipe (with substitutions where necessary, like I used turkey meat in place of cockatrice for instance LMAO) over the course of a year. Some wins, some fails, but it was such a great kick in the ass and so much good experience that's really pushed my cooking into a much better place. I have a much better sense of flavors now, and I'm not afraid of cooking things on high heat anymore.

The Huntsman Winter War, Eight Below, Empire Strikes Back (totally counts), The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Ice Age (first one), Elf (one of the few Christmas movies I semi-enjoy), Muppet Christmas Carol (my favorite Christmas movie), Nightmare Before Christmas.

The Thing, aka the best horror movie ever. Wind River, great movie and great music. Fargo, it is hilarious (also the reason I thought Canadians said Eh a lot). Snowpiercer, has filthy, hobo Chris Evans and the best train ride ever.

Upcoming cold as fuck (and potentially snowy as fuck) PNW reporting in! My absolute favorite winter-time movie is Cool Runnings; it always puts me in a better (and warmer!) mood.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, also The Shining. Either the Kubrick film or the mini-series, depending on what mood I'm in. Sunset at 3:30 in the afternoon can kinda put you in that mindset, haha.

A lot of things in the Tolkien movies. Kili, Fili, and Thorin. Elrond. Sauron (eye form, and the use of the scary form in the creation of the rings since he still would have had a fair form then). Radagast. Grima Wormtongue looked too obviously traitorous. Alfrid (frankly, he shouldn't have been there at all). The Great Goblin and a lot of the goblins and orcs in the Hobbit trilogy.

Snape, Sirius, Remus, and all the characters from that generation in Harry Potter. Too old.

so, I make cosplay for a living (commissions). I have had the misfortune of being presented with some of the most ridonculous designs out there and tasked with trying to determine 1 - how to do it and 2 - what that would cost. So I have a few real hated designs.

More than anything else I hate Marvel movie designs. There are seams everywhere. Overlapping panels. Superfluous seam details to make the costumes look excitingly futuristic. In some cases I know there's an underlying reason - some of the stunt costumes had to have elastic or tearaway panels designed into the costume for ease of movement for the stuntpeople, and therefore the main actors' hero suits had to have the same seams without the elastic and tearaway features. BUT. That doesn't explain all of them. It doesn't explain the four layers of overlapping chunky panels on the shoulders of Captain America's fucking suit.

Other than that I reserve my hatred for designs that make me go "but...why?" It's less the "impossible" gravity defying designs, since there are actually very few of those, it's more the designs that throw in a boob window or low-cut back or high-cut skirt slits that just. Don't need to exist if not for the male gaze. They're not attractive on real people and I might almost say they aren't flattering on the 100lb original characters either.

I know it's kind of an obvious answer, but I loathe incredibly revealing "armor" designs for female characters, if the same equipment is full coverage and practical on male ones.

Thank goodness this seems to be tapering off a little. Or maybe I'm just playing games where it's more equal? Both Monster Hunter and FFXIV are really good about it-- like, there's still revealing armor, but if it's revealing on the girls, it's revealing on the guys, too, haha. Which I'm fine with!

I have shit to do tomorrow (today, fuck, it’s 1 am) and I can’t sleep or get warm, even buried under blankets with hot water bottles and hot tea. My throat and eyes are itching and I’m not bringing anything up when I cough, and I woke up from an hour’s sleep sounding like a purring cat crossed with a ticking clock, neither of which is a good human noise.

I’m just barely feverish (99-100.7 degrees) and keep chugging tea and having to get up to pee and freezing and I hate it. I feel dehydrated and it’s really uncomfortable to lay down. I just want to not be sick so I can take my hen to the vet (in seven hours, fuck) and do my laundry and dishes and go to work on Saturday and actually fucking function. I was still getting over a cold/flu from October until the first week of November and I fucking got my flu shot before then. I’m exhausted.
