Politics in fandom are srs business on LiveJournal. Especially in the yaoi fandom. Unfunf. "NOW PHOENIX AND MILES CAN'T LEGALLY GET MARRIED OHNOES"

More like not wanting to associate with people who support legislating their religions while denying other real live humans basic human rights, like the right to marry whoever they please.

Re: 123

Marriage is a religious institution, it should have nothing to do with government. Gay couples should have the same legal rights as all other couples, but this does not mean the government should say, "hey church, change the way you've been operating since you were made."

Re: 123

[identity profile] lady-mercury.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's not changing the way the church runs. What about other cultures that have marriage ceremonies? What about their beliefs on marriage?

Marriage isn't something Christianity invented.

And yes, I am a Christian.

fail anon is fail.

1) Marriage predates religion. In its purest form it is a contract.

2) Check out the work of Dr. John Boswell (http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/pwh/index-bos.html), former (A. Whitney Griswold Professor of History at Yale). Turns out the Christianity wasn't always as stuck-up about same-sex unions as it is today.

3) No gay couple's marriage is going to damage any straight couple's marriage. If Mr and Mrs Straighty McStraightStraight think that their marriage is somehow less sacrosanct because a gay people can get married too, when they're both on their fifth marriage and

4) The Unitarian Universalist Church recognizes and supports gay marriage. So do various neopagan faiths, which are recognized by the US government. What about THEIR free exercise of religion?

5) By your logic, athiests and agnostics, and non-practitioners of religion should be barred from marrying on the grounds that they're areligious.

"hey church, change the way you've been operating since you were made."

6) WRONG. Nowhere in any of the laws wherein gay marriage is legal does the language require the church(es) to recognize those marriages. The government is recognizing them ITSELF, and providing the same LEGAL benefits to married gay couples as to married straight couples.

Personally, I'd like to see the government out of marriage all together, both in giving them and in recognizing them when they're given by religious institutions*. Everyone gets a civil union from their state to pick up their "united as a couple" legal rights and then goes to their Religious Organization of Choice for a piece of paper that says "MARRIED" on it.

*which, to the best of my knowledge, doesn't happen today.

Re: #2: John Boswell is the former A. Whitney Griswold Professor of History at Yale. Which somehow the comment didn't parse. The reason he's a "former" is that he's since died.

Re: 123

[identity profile] kindkit.livejournal.com 2008-11-10 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, for fuck's sake. A state recognizing same-sex marriage DOES NOT force any church to perform a same-sex wedding ceremony. I repeat, DOES NOT. And marriage, as it is regulated by states, is a civil contract. It just happens to be one that can (but doesn't have to be) made binding by a religious ceremony. State recognition of same-sex marriages grants the right to the civil contract, NOT to a religious ceremony. NOT. NOT. NOT.

Next time, do a little research and figure out what the hell you're talking about before you post.

What the fuck?

Someone cares about a friend voting to take their own right to marriage away, they become a stupid yaoi fangirl who's whining about their fictional OTP not being able to get married?

That's pretty disgusting.

The secret woulda been better had it not mentioned the slash/yaoi fandom. That's when I lost respect for it :P

Re: 123

(Anonymous) 2008-11-08 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the feeling it mentioned slash/yaoi to point out that the ex-friend was being a hypocrite for reading about two men fucking while voting against gay rights.

You know, just a thought.

Re: 123

Amazing. When I was reading that secret, I was drawn in by this: "What if I wanted to get married someday?"

You somehow got this instead: "NOW PHOENIX AND MILES CAN'T LEGALLY GET MARRIED OHNOES"

Please let me know how you do that. [awed]

Stop talking immediately.

[identity profile] jaclynhyde.livejournal.com 2008-11-08 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
How about "NOW I CAN'T LEGALLY GET MARRIED OHNOES"

Or "NOW MY FRIENDS AND COWORKERS AND PEOPLE THAT HAVE DONE NOTHING EXCEPT FALL IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE OF THE SAME GENDER CAN'T LEGALLY GET MARRIED OHNOES"

This has nothing to do with fictional characters, except to point out the hypocrisy of a yaoi fan not supporting equal rights for real live gay people. Ass.

Yeah, way to utterly miss the point. You know, there is this thing out side your computer called real life. You should take a look at it sometime.

Re: 123

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
As a lesbian who also thinks it's enraging when yaoi fangirls think the real-life gay is "gross" and "wrong" and pull a ton of bullshit out of thin air in order to feel justified about not supporting real life gay rights...

Fuck off.

Re: 123

[identity profile] xevochic.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
This. SO HARD.

When I realised that so many fans of slash/femslash and yaoi/yuri (but thankfully not all) do not even agree with the real life LGBT, I was completely disgusted with fandom. They glamourise slash/femslash and yaoi/yuri to be something that's "hot" and "kinky", then proceed to talk about their complete disgust of same-sex or transgendered anything offline.

It reminds me too well of people's attitudes towards interracial relationships back in the day. People would gladly read fiction about interracial relationships, because it was "forbidden" and "mysterious", then turn around and fight tooth and nail against interracial people being together in real life.

It's so sick and fucked up.

Re: 123

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
It is. Thankfully, I don't know anyone in life who's quite like that. I do know a rabid yaoi fangirl -- friend of a friend and I feel BAD for that friend -- because when she found out said friend was bisexual, she flipped out, refused to stand too close to the girl in public because people would "think bad things," etcetera. I hate shit like that, and I hate the hypocrites who think one gender being gay is awesome ("WHOO LESBIANS ARE HOT" or "WHOO BOYS KISSING") but give the other gender flak for it (calling males who are gay horrible names and making their lives hell, going "ewewew!" and pretty much throwing hissy fits when it turns out someone they know is a lesbian).

Luckily, I mostly hear and see this around the high-school-age-or-younger set. And I know people who've grown out of it. But it just... ugh, it makes my esteem for the world sink like a stone.

Re: 123 (a bit long, sorry)

[identity profile] xevochic.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hate the hypocrites who think one gender being gay is awesome...but give the other gender flak for it.

This SO DAMN HARD. I hate my sister's guyfriends who do the "lesbian are hot, but gay men are disgusting" shit. NO. It does NOT work like that. Stop making lesbians your personal fetish! They are NOT here for your entertainment! Those "weekend lesbians" (the girls who pretend to be lesbians to get attention) don't help matters either.

I'm so sad that I don't know any straight, truly pro-LGBT people offline. I know several gay guys who have straight friends, but all of the straight friends (who I know) are disgusted with their "lifestyle". One of the guys I work with is friends with all of my female co-workers, but every single female co-worker has called him (and our two other gay male co-workers) a "disgusting faggot" behind his back. I even had to cuss one of them out for using that term nonstop one day. We also work with a lot of lesbians at my job; but, despite the sensitivity training we go through every year (which I hate since we are taught about "tolerance" and not "acceptance"), I still hear my female co-workers talk about how "disgusting" the "dykes" are. I will never understand how someone can be surrounded by so many homosexuals and STILL be so fucking bigoted. All of those people are college seniors and older, unfortunately.

I've been called a lesbian several times for sticking up for gay rights. (My mother even thinks I am a lesbian since I haven't been in a long-term relationship with a guy since high school.) Hell, I've been called a lesbian for falling in love with a gay guy who I didn't know was gay at the time. Thankfully, I don't find think it's an insult at all.

As for fandom, I'm so glad I have nothing but fandom friends who are pro-sexuality. It's a great relief from real life bollocks.

Re: 123 (a bit long, sorry)

[identity profile] lady-mercury.livejournal.com 2008-11-09 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think the problem lies with how its presented in the fandom. There's the submissive/uke and the possessive/seme -- these traits basically represent the a-typical role of man and woman. It doesn't help that the "uke" is drawn almost to look like a woman while the "seme" clearly has " manly traits ".

Even if it is "yaoi/slash" its still not representing anything but giving a flat chested chick a dick.

This is probably why girls get so deluded with yaoi and find it so hard to accept it in the real world. It doesn't look right, it's no longer cute, it doesn't have that cute " awwwwwww its so kawaii~ " appeal.

It makes me sick. I agree with what you said.
