The Good Place finale

(Anonymous) 2020-01-31 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Did anyone else watch The Good Place series finale last night? I don't know if I liked it, per se, but I cannot stop thinking about it.

Can you move this to another thread? I want to discuss but the first comment probably won't hide spoilers. (Speaking from experience here.)

I absolutely hated it.

SA -looks like the thread is collapsing so I figured it was safe-

I was going to make it into a secret, but figured since I just watched it, I'd talk about it here!

!OBVIOUS SPOILERS FOR THE GOOD PLACE!

I hated how it ended, that a two second decision that the people in the Good Place could decide to kill themselves once they got bored, and that it was some acceptable answer.
Especially since the whole show was based around split second decision like that not working out, or being contested in some way. Especially since Janet is left alone at the end with no reassurance other than, oh, she remembers time differently so it's fine.

It makes no sense, and if they wanted some heartbreaking finale where everyone is miserable than it should have been some sort of reincarnation type of deal. Restarting from a new slate as new person (possibly with the inclinations that made them a good person) who get's the memories of their past lives back when/if they get back to the Good Place.

Either way, the idea that true peace and happiness can only be found in absolute death is stupid and totally the wrong message to send.

Yeah, it was way too mournful for me. I got into the show because I like comedy and the first few seasons made me laugh, so to have the series end with the main characters going beyond dead into literal nothingness was uncomfy. I hated the message that heaven was more meaningful because you knew it could end and that wanting is better than having in a way. I just have to keep telling myself the characters were in The Good Place long enough for it to get boring even though it was only 60 minutes for me.

I absolutely felt bad for Janet, too, and the people they left behind. I did enjoy that Michael outlived them all in way, though. It was nice that he was still kicking around, even if that'll end as well.

I guess you can tell that I just watched this;;

I know right, like they didn't even need to make all overtly cheerful or anything, (though I would definitely prefer that) but at least end it on a hopeful note. I got that the little golden snowflakes falling down when the went through the door inspired people in the human realm to do good things that the person going through the door did in their lives. Like with Eleanor and the dude who returned Micheal's mail for his Coyote Joe's membership is how he knew she killed herself. There's just so many way's I think they could have done it better... idk.
I also can't buy into the idea that people would get so bored in the afterlife so easily. Though you're absolutely right with it lasting however many Bearimy's and not just 60mins of TV time. I'm sure they could go through the green door and live out half a century in the life of French 1600's nun or whatever. Or get the option of 'resetting' themselves, since they lived out I don't know how long in Micheal's original 'Good Place' without getting bored. Even the Judge who's existed since the beginning only talks about pop-culture references seems just as not having a problem with immortality. Nor the demon's/Tahani because they actually have job's and purpose. Something that can easily be recreated in the afterlife!

And Janet! I can't even get into how mad I am about what they did to her! Clearly she was really upset by this, and her face when Elenor says she's going to convince Chidi to stay is just heartbreaking!

I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and I hated it so fucking much. I can't think of the last time the ending of a show pissed me off so much (and I watched Lost and Dexter!). I'm weirdly glad to see that the people here hated it, too, because elsewhere online I've seen all this ~it was poignant and beautiful!~ bullshit, and that just makes me angry.

This is probably a weird takeaway, but it came off as oddly...privileged to me? Like, I'm probably overthinking it and there's probably no point in trying to make parallels to reality because it's a fantasy show, and I'm not even sure I can explain it in a way that makes sense to anyone other than me, but...

It's like, yeah, all you people watching who are dealing with awful shit in your lives, let's show you some characters who essentially have perfect lives and none of the problems you have to deal with, and they're spoiled, ungrateful brats who are ~bored~ so they're just going to kill themselves and it's going to be framed as some profound, amazing thing.

I'm not super surprised that I hated it, this last season I'd lost a lot of interest (and at one point I considered it one of my favorite shows) and then with the introduction of the final door, I had a feeling it was going to be a letdown, but man...so fucking disappointing.

Your paragraphs about it seeming privileged make total sense to me. I've had A Hard Knock Life and been through a lot of bad shit in just 30 years, and I think part of why it's upsetting me is because the message was even IF I make it through the real-world shit and get eternal paradise, that's gonna suck too, just in a different way! I don't know. Based on other online reactions, a lot of people loved the finale's message, but it wasn't one I personally needed.

Re: SA -looks like the thread is collapsing so I figured it was safe-

(Anonymous) 2020-02-01 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol this is such a Bad Take. Perfect lives? Did you... not see... the entire show? Did the entire point go over your head? The point was that everyone has bad things to deal with, whether it be because they were born in poverty or because they were born into wealth, but everyone has the capacity to be good, despite their upbringings. The whole point of taking the test over and over was the great equalizer of privilege. What, because someone is privileged on earth, they don't deserve happiness if they truly earn it?

I don't understand how so many people are missing the concept of peace as a final destination as a good thing... not to mention the fact that the final door is an option, and not required.

I hear complaints about how the show is Philosophy 101 and yet so many people can't even grasp that.

ayrt

Hell, I still can't say how much I've calmed down, tbh;; I'm almost glad I didn't go into the fandom, if people from it actually think whatever they threw at us at the end was good in any way, or meaning;;...

Privileged is a very, very good way to put it, imo. The idea that they just /give up/, for no other reason than that they figure there's nothing left that could possibly interest them is just so stupid! Entirely privileged in a way that apparently /any one/ getting into the good place is basically meant to end up miserable and alone, and can only find happiness with suicide... Like what the hell?!

I was getting sick of the show myself, but hell, I'd never expect an ending like /that/! I tempted to feel legitimately betrayed...

I liked it. The running joke of the entire series is that the eternal afterlife game of pop Christian theology is a clusterfuck of contradictions that are unfair and immoral if people bother to think about it for more than five minutes. So good on them for coming to a conclusion that's both consistent with four seasons of writing and isn't completely bullshit.

I think it IS completely bullshit, but hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion.

Can I just say I'm surprised everyone commenting in this thread hated it? I ALSO hated it, but everyone else in my circles of the Internet have praised it to high heaven, so I thought I'd just have to live with my hatred forever. Nice to see I found some like-minded people! :D

I've been stealthily avoiding most of the fandom for this, but still, I have a hard time imagining that people are just fine with it.... It's quite the conundrum;;

I'm getting concerned that FF7 Remake is blowing its load way too soon by showing all these really iconic moments in trailers well before launch. I'm beginning to worry that the actual game is going to be super dull and uninspired bc they're not seeming to be able to sell it on its own merits.

I hope I'm wrong. Cloud sure looks good crossdressing, at least!

Idk, they weren't above, say, spoiling things in commercials with the original. Maybe they're just used to throwing everything out there.

I'm thinking of canceling Netflix. The only thing I'm really waiting on at this point is Stranger Things s4 and then I'm out.

What about Season 3 of Dark?

Re: Entertainment/Fandom News

(Anonymous) 2020-02-01 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
They do have good foreign language content. Babylon Berlin is actually probably my favorite of their non-English shows, I like it more than Dark. But watching things on sub is just distracting enough to keep me from truly sinking my teeth into a series the way I'd like to, and the Netflix dubs are hilariously bad.

Waiting for the last season of Schitt's Creek to turn up on it then Stranger Things. not much else interests me on there.

I'm really, really digging Taylor Swift's song 'Only The Young' from her documentary. I haven't had a chance to watch Americana yet, but the song is haunting.

Huh. I didn't know about this. As far as pop songs written for political rallying purposes go, it seems solid. I'm not sure how much I'll listen to it just for its own sake, but I like that she made it.
