New Media you Didn't Like

What New Media did you try and Not like? Doesn't have to actually be new, just that you tried recently.

"The End of the Fucking World". It takes a lot to get me to enjoy shows with teenage characters. IDK why, I guess I don't like things that remind me of those years in my own life.

I've tried a few times to watch Nailed It! because the concept is funny, but it's too...loud? And gameshow like? I don't really enjoy the format of the show and there's no help for that.

The Witcher. Jaskier was my favorite and really the only character I gave a shit about. Well, him and Roach.

Brain Games. I liked the earlier episode that was "demonstrations to random people on the street," but the game show format isn't working for me. (Primarily because I gnash my teeth every time they bring out the "mentalist.")

Well, it's not new now, but when it was new, I really hated Girls. I just really disliked pretty much every single character on the show, found almost all the sex scenes extremely off-putting, and found the plots painfully mundane (which can work in some cases, but I'd have to actually like the characters to want to watch a show about their shitty, mundane doings).

Lego Masters. I'm active in the AFOL community and have friends on the show but it's so obnoxious. And every team had a little introduction in the show except the gay couple. Their interview was cut from the episode and posted on social media instead and they're hardly in the first (and so far only) episode.

The Good Place.

Technically I liked it for most of it's run, but the ending hit such a sour note for me that it left a bad taste for the series as a whole. I'll probably get over it eventually, but for now I'm going to stay away from it.

I'm super tired. I have to write several pages of my thesis still and I would like to do it tonight because I think I won't be able to manage it at all anymore, time- wise. But I'm so damn tired. And I'm tempted to just go to sleep and start super early tomorrow but on the other hand, nights are when I can work the most undisturbed. Not sure which option is the wiser one.

How gory is 1917?

(Anonymous) 2020-02-09 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone keeps saying this movie is amazing, but it's a modern war movie so, like, on a score of one to Saving Private Ryan, how gory is it? How many people's intestines would I see? How many limbs get blown off?

Game, series, book, whatever. What did you just finish, and how was it? Were you inspired to fandom it?

Just finished the novelization for the Chronicles of Riddick. I wish there was a fandom for that, but it seems most of the fandom is for the first and third movie whereas my favorite is the second.

I just finished the Chinese drama Guardian. Like Untamed, it's another BL novel that was adapted into a live-action series but all the actual BL got cut, though it's ridiculously obvious what's going on between the two male leads.

It wasn't THAT great overall, mainly because there was a lot of irrevelent filler, awful scene direction, and assumed you'd care about numerous characters that were at best forgettable. But the two main actors were extraordinary, and moved me to tears. If I could chisel a bunch of the nonsense and cringe from the sidelines, and allow the story to be a little bit meaner to the side characters so I'd actually feel more sympathy for them, and really let the group dynamic shine, it'd be a fucking awesome show.

I'm reading the novel now, which is naturally leagues better, but the two main actors from the show are 100% canon for me. Those beautiful, beautiful bastards.

Upstart Crow. Historical sitcom based on Shakespeare's life. Ben Elton is the writer.

It took a few eps to get my head round the premise - and I still think Kit Marlowe should have been more into men - but it's clever. I liked Will's Brummie family, and the constant digs at the anti-Stratfordians, and the running joke about the dreadful coach service from London.

Hamnet's death was very affecting.

I didn't get fannish about it; it's a bit too quickfire for that.

Uncharted 4, and Lost Legacy. *Will contain spoilers*

The games were alright, the gameplay and general plot were great, but I hated the direction of the characters. Nate sounded so unhappy the entire time, and it seemed to go the direction where they had something planned but decided against it at the last minute. Kinda like how Charlie in the second game didn't have much of a role because his actor flaked out on the role. I was disappointed that there was no supernatural elements as well, especially since the pirate ghosts are such a thing in multiplayer, and by the fourth game I was expecting it. So due to that and Nadine needing to be sympathetic enough to be a main character in Lost Legacy, the ending was an extreme let down, and every anticlimactic. Sam is the worst.
Lost Legacy was fine, aside from me not actually caring about Nadine. The game was obviously meant to be shorter, and had flaws associated with that. Also Sam is the worst.

Both games are beautiful, and are great to play, but as an Uncharted game, not my favourite. I would recommend them both, even with my hangups about the characters.

SA!
