What media did fandom lead you to believe would be a lot gayer than it actually was? I'll start: Captain Marvel.

Teen Wolf. I also thought there would be a lot more Stiles and a lot less Scott. So I was disappointed by a lot.

STRONGLY seconding this, oh my god. I thought there would be so much less Scott, and so much more screen time where Stiles and Derek interact. (I only watched the first two seasons.)

Homg, yes. I was in it from the start so I didn't *expect* more Stiles and Derek, per se, but as the show went on and Stiles got more popular and Scott got more stupid, I know I was pretty fucking shocked when the producer/writer/whoever the hell he was got all defensive and twitchy about it and started cutting down the Stiles/Derek onscreen time.

I started watching in that big boom when season 2 was airing and the fandom was all saying that Sterek was going to be canon, and was part of the group of new viewers wondering what we were missing.

I totally think that Stiles was essentially written as bi, but Stiles/Derek don't have that many interactions in the first two seasons and almost none post that.

Whatever, I'm just happy we got an episode that was entirely Stiles and Peter.

Doctor Who quite honestly. Really I was just expecting it to be more shippy than it was. I never really shipped the Doctor with anyone until River came along, and while I do ship Doctor/Master and Missy, I think it is less on the screen than fandom would like to think.

The Who fandom made it seem like it was all romance all the time, but when I got into the show it wasn't that at all.

I got into Doctor Who during Ten's run and certain posts led me to believe that Doctor/Master was canon. I can see it and I definitely ship it, but it's not as overt as the fandom led me to believe.

Voltron with Klance. I didn't expect it to be more gay than the standard rival ship where bickering is taken as UST, but I like those ships and it turned out Klance wasn't even that. They didn't interact much at all.

Yup. Yup, and I used to majorly ship Dean/Cas when I was in the fandom. But I was well aware that it was all fanon. People claiming it is canon are just ridiculous.

I legit thought the lawyers were one drunken night away from wildly pounding each other's asses.

Although some would argue they actually are.

Absolutely this. The story between Edgeworth and Phoenix plays out as the perfect romance, imo.

*the irony here is that there WAS gay in this show... but it's not what everyone wanted or talked about.

It's weird, cause I actually expected The Untamed to be LESS gay than it was due to the censors and was really surprised by how much they did with it.

That said:

- Teen Wolf (Sterek was nearly non-existent in actual canon?)
- Voltron (Same with Klance. I understood Sheith a lot better)
- Once Upon a Time (I kinda sorta understand the theory of SwanQueen but...)
- The entire MCU

Ditto re: The Untamed. I figured they'd play it pretty straight up best friends and wasn't even expecting subtext at all. I definitely wasn't expecting all the longing glances and UST.

Then again, Once Upon a Time canon was taken over by ridiculous romance that ruined things (cough:CaptiainSwan), so the fandom wasn't the worst part about that show.

i'm still partly flabbergasted by just how popular klance was and still is considering that the ship had less screentime in the show than sterek did in TW.

i mean hats-off to the fandom i guess for being able to churn out the content, but man, you'd think they'd have all the interaction and storylines if you didn't know anything about the show.

I'm surprised multiple people have named the MCU in this thread. I know there are a bunch of slash ships, but I didn't think anyone outside of certain fandom circles took them seriously enough to make people think they could expect anything.

Saiyuki. Like, 20 years ago when official translations for yaoi manga were not a thing yet little fangirls assured me this series was very very gay and... nope. No. There's subtext, there's fandom, but there was no text and at the time on the contrary the canon was very much No Homo Bro.
