118. They're not great books, but neither is Harry Potter. Stop being so judgemental. I read Salman Rushdie and CJ Cherryh and Lawrence Durrell and all kinds of wonderful authors. But you can't read Lawrence Durrell on the bus, at least not if you a) want to be able to follow the story and b) don't want to get pickpocketed. I like Twilight and Salman Rushdie. Just like I like KitKat bars AND organic, vegetarian gourmet food. Also, I cannot fucking imagine how anyone could be more different from Buffy than Bella Swan, who not only does not kick ass, but could probably mortally injure herself opening a bottle of beer if she didn't have friends.

121. I don't think of "slash goggles" as seeing EVERYONE as gay. Just more like being able to see the possibilities for all kinds of relationships. Sure not everyone is gay, but there's subtext in at least one or two pairings in everything.

136. This. I have not yet read "Breaking Dawn" and I expect it to suck. (I'm used to authors turning out one or two or even four or five books I enjoy and then starting to suck like a busted airlock in the vacuum of intergalactic space, and yes I am looking at JKR and Anne Rice. OTOH, I liked the first book more than I thought I would.) But I am really really sick of the way that a certain contingent in every fucking fandom on the internet persists in looking at characters in SF, fantasy and horror novels, movies and TV shows and judging them as if they were not just human but normal, average, everyday typical people that you might expect to meet at work or school, and if "imprinting" is a fact of this universe's world-building, then it's not "pedophilia" any more than the way worker bees serve their queen is "slavery". Why do people like this even read fantasy/SF/horror?

i concur. i actually bought the umbrella academy on the strength of the cover art (http://www.amazon.com/Umbrella-Academy/dp/1593079788/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1226890781&sr=8-1), completely loved it. only later realising the author, i listened to the songs, which were alright. but gerard is kind of awesome.

OHhhhhh Gerardddd you make my heart burnnn <3. Yeah, I agree, fandom's a lot more than what people make it out to be, as are they in general. My friends make fun of me so hard for it. Though not quite as much as I get made fun of for Panic! At The Disco. Anyway, Gerard is the coolest and awesomest and most inspiring mofo, I swear. I did fall out of the MCR fandom awhile ago, I've been meaning to jump back in but that takes effort :/

I JUST watched Red Eye last weekend, and I've been obsessing over it ever since, and I was upset because I thought no one cared about it anymore. Clearly not. And I agree with you, by the way. Seriously, though, I completely agree! I fucking hate McShep! In fact, I really hate slash in general. As a queer person, I find that so much of it just belittles and trivializes the realities that LGBT folks have to face. And it's kind of pathetic that they just automatically reduce the entire range of human emotion and relationships to fucking.

The thing about this is, I've seen a ton of slash that isn't just an excuse for porn, and just as much het that is. Some people... enjoy porn. Other people really like the emotions and personalities and relationships. I'm a lesbian myself, and I find that what you're describing is just a quality of fandom overall, not just slash shippers.

And I'm just gonna add to that, that I don't really want to see oh-so-serious fanfics and such most of the time. Too many movies and books about gay people only play up the depressing aspects, with so much torture and hardship and angst and unhappy endings. If I wanted that, I'd watch Brokeback Mountain. I don't actually want to see that movie because I don't enjoy that sort of depressing message and storyline; in fandom, I want to read and write about relationships I find to be interesting and fun.
