I think the term Mary Sue still has its place in fandom conversation.

Is it used on flimsy pretexts sometimes? Yes. Do some author demographics unfairly get the brunt of it? Yes. But that doesn't mean the term has no merit.

I think that either "Mary Sue" should not be applied to original work period or we should have a different term with different things for which makes one. But we shouldn't apply "Mary Sue" to original fiction. It either gets confusing or creates a double standard. "Mary Sue" is a FANfiction term for something particular to fandom works. I think the misapplication to original works creates most of the problem.

Janeway is still my favorite Star Trek captain. Even reading what was posted yesterday about Mulgrew, that changes how I feel about the actress a whole lot, but not the character. Janeway is still the best and I still don't get the hate based on what we have on screen.

The kitchen scene in the movie Hannibal is one of the most sexually provocative and bizarrely romantic things I've ever seen. Part of the reason I never bothered with the TV series was the replacement of the female agent with a male one. I'm sure Will is as compelling a character as Clarice (maybe even more so), and I'd probably be into Will/Lecter if I watched it, but the gender polarity was the icing on the cake for me.

I have some friends in my fandom that all they have to say about female characters is that they are beautiful/cute/queens whenever they're mentioned. Even for female characters that have done jack shit and literally have been introduced only to be forgotten by the author and never come back again. It annoys me to no end and I think it's stupid as shit. But I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, so instead I just end up bashing them in my head in frustration. Yay female characters!

When it comes to what I ship, in terms of numbers I ship M/F the most, then M/M, then F/F. But when it comes to what I read, particularly for smutty stuff, I mainly read M/M and then F/F. I just don't read M/F smut anymore or really any M/F fics unless they are action/plotty fics with the romance as a side thing.

Supposing a canon woman character is in the way of my preferred slash ship.
I'd rather have her die in fanfic and be properly mourned, than have her characterisation flattened into cool girlfriend or compliant wife in a poly relationship.
