I just wish there was more than one episode.

I really, really want them to be able to make more. I loved the pilot.

It was so cute! They did a great job on it.

Notice how it tends to be the shows with canon queer characters where the creator gets accused of being a pedophile or a Nazi or whatnot?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that people who criticize the show are doing so out of homophobia, or what? I genuinely don't understand what you're saying

If I had to guess, I’d say that the reason is that the kind of person who makes all these criticisms only watches queer shows in the first place. But however it happens, it’s pretty ridiculous that the most inclusive stuff always gets the most flack from people who supposedly want inclusive stuff.

In summary, if a show or whatever is created by a queer person, or the subject matter involves a lot of queer characters, it gets heavily criticized in a way that other things don't. People expect queer content to be Perfect, in whatever way perfect means to them, and if the creator or the content is not Squeaky Clean Perfection, it gets judged extra harshly.

I’d love to see counterexamples in either direction. I think The Loud House had a gay character and avoided flack?

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I felt so bad for the creators. This was their passion project. They spent years on it. Then everyone pissed all over it for the most incomprehensible reasons. It wasn't great, but I thought it was pretty good for a pilot episode.

Completely agree. The fandom wank surrounding this show was ridiculous, in each and every way. I understand the premise alone will bother some people, but the reaction was disproportionate to the extreme. Which I've found common on cases like this, where a new non-mainstream author, especially with fandom ties, got to start a passion project. There's certain "how dare" attitude, for what I've seen.

That's so bizarre. By the way, I love your icon! <3

Thank you! They're Alastor and Charlie, my two faves + favorite dynamic in the pilot ^^

Could I get a rundown of the wank?

This post summer it up pretty well. this one and this one raise interesting points too.

I think that the fact that the author has ties to fandom (and not just the ~wholesome parts) and has said she doesn't mind what people ship bothers some people too.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's some crazy wank.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh thank you for the links! Sounds like typical tumblr hysterics. They say the same thing about Star Wars. Problematic, abusive, racist, etc. The so called "anti's" of tumblr think everything has issues. You kinda just gloss over it.

I'm surprised people would be bothered by her basically giving her blessing to fans to create whatever shippy art they want. If anything I see people reminding others that all ships are welcome, probably because she said that.

i kind of wonder if the loudest and jerkiest critics of this pilot are just really jealous because another nerd is actually living their dream of animating a show and getting some attention for it.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm 1000% certain this is the truth.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
That would make sense. It really is a passion project and seems to be very personal for the creator.

100% accurate XD. The wank with this fandom takes all forms, but when it comes against the creator like that, I have to assume petty jealousy is a big factor.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Glorious wank! :huggles OP:

I've only seen issues in the reddit, and some stuff about worrying about what people say, but perhaps I haven't dug far enough into the fandom pits to find anything this juicy. Having consumed a lot of "edgy" media over the years, HH is so tame with pc cuteness, I'm not sure what the fuss is either. But I guess it's just that kind of series. I'm enjoying it greatly though.

(Anonymous) 2020-04-21 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
HH is cool, pretty and funny and fun. Doesn't deserve whatever nonsense is getting tossed at it for sure.

But Helluva Boss is a fucking masterpiece and I am just destroyed that it doesn't seem to be getting as much attention.

I guess I'm just lonely. And you know what happens when I get lonely.

I loved Helluva Boss too! The songs were incredibly catchy LMAO. And the characters plain adorable, which might me a weird thing to say XD. Stolas was creeeepy, I loved it. Personally, I'd love to see both shows cross over.

Ironically, I think HB doesn't get as much Discourse TM because the characters are more... cheerfully, uncomplicatedly "worse"? I mean, they're killers for hire LOL. For some reason that doesn't get as much flack as more "ambiguous" characters.
