Or maybe he was not talking about people with impairments and disabilities and was talking about Anglophones who don't bother watching any foreign media because why should they when English is the most popular language around the world.

Dude was right. Most foreign media won't get dubbed and won't be able to reach a wider audience because people just want to stick with Anglophone media.

I'm someone who is often reluctant to watch a subtitled film, and I still largely agree with him.

I mean, the reason I find subtitles frustrating is because I find it difficult to judge the quality of the acting when its a subtitled film, and I really love taking in the nuances and subtleties of an acting performance. Also, sometimes I just want to be passive and let the entertainment do the work for me. And that's fine.

But there is so much excellent cinema out there that's not in english, and a lot of people seem to not realize that. So I have no problem with him pointing it out.

Sadly, I know a lot of people who go, "Ugh, subtitles? Pass. I can't watch a show and be on my phone if the dialog isn't in English!"

??? This response is so nonsensical. If you knew anything about the Korean media landscape, you would know there is plenty of Korean-language media to consume for any Korean person with visual impairments bad enough they can't read subtitles. And not just dubbed media, but also shows that have been licensed and remade, like Suits or The Entourage.

So congrats? You've proved OP's point that a robust media landscape with dubbing and culture-specific remakes are the best for the visually-impaired in that country, I guess.

Well, the one person I know who refuses to watch anything with subtitles and consumes media that typically has dubs in it (like anime, etc.) is someone I choose not to associate with much anymore because I find her insufferable and get stressed around her because she's so self-involved and out of it. So.....yeah I'm judging hard, sorry.

I can never read subtitles fast enough to see it at the cinema. Will happily watch subs by myself so I can pause it to read at my own pace, just never gonna watch movies/shows with anyone else lol.

I'm generally good with English subtitles, but I suddenly flashed back to the time I saw Letters From Iwo Jima, which is primarily in Japanese, in a theater in Switzerland, where the subtitles were in French and German. That was an adventure.

I don't like watching subtitled movies because I spend most of my time reading the subtitles and miss nuances in things like expressions/acting, scenery, props, etc. I much prefer to watch a movie in one of the two languages I can understand. I have watched subtitled things (especially during my anime phase in college), but I definitely don't prefer it and don't watch a lot of subtitled media.

This is how I feel about subs on animation - I really want to watch the animation parts of the thing I'm watching, but I also want to understand the story too. It's not so bad when its shows - like, if I'm really into it I'll watch it twice so I can read the translation the first time round and watch the animation in the next viewing.

I get way too involved in reading and miss a lot of the visual information. This happens with closed captioning for me too - so, it's fine for, like, most of the news, but other things, not so much. I just can't seem to process both streams of information simultaneously. A few lines in a movie are okay, but the few fully subtitled ones that I've seen, I felt like I was missing half of the movies (it also probably doesn't help that I think there were some cultural differences that I wasn't quite getting), so I mostly don't see them. I'm not entirely sure dubbing would work for me either, since I seem to also have a real issue when the audio track isn't synced with the visual - I end up looking away and just listening. Though, if, as in a documentary, they have someone speaking along with a slightly louder voice-over translation, that's fine.

Look, i know what you mean, but the truth is - it's a side effect of you (general you) not watching enough subtitled media. If you read too little, you read too slowly for the standard subtitles, you focus too long on the words on the bottom of the screen and miss stuff, or simply focus too much on them, because you are not used to taking them in a glance and switching back to the main frame yet. It doesn't mean that you can't do it. There are rules about subtitles (how many words per second are easily readable for an average person, etc.), and they are based on research. It gets easier pretty quickly. There are entire nations who watch everything with subtitles and it's not an issue of them being somehow naturally more skilled at this than English-speaking people. It's just the issue of them getting through teh adjustment period fairly early in their lives. You can all do it, you just have to have try a tiny bit harder for a bit. (or not, if you don't want to, you don't want to, it's just entertainment)

Dude, come on. I'm a fast reader and I still might miss a line or miss part of the scene because it goes by too fast sometimes. That being said, I do watch a lot of subbed stuff and will pause and go back when I have to, and it's easier to catch everything in animation than in live action, but still.

There's a French dub on the DVD/Blu-ray. Given that, I'm not sure why there isn't an English dub as well.
