What are some odd misapprehensions other people have had about you? I had classmates in high school who were absolutely astonished I even knew any swear words, and people at uni kept mistaking me for straight. What about you guys?

A lot of the guys in my co-ed dorm assumed I was a lesbian because... I don't know why. I wasn't very traditionally feminine, I suppose. I didn't give a shit about what guys thought, because I was already dating someone in a long distance relationship. I'm blunt and opinionated. I wear a lot of flannel in cold weather.

Late last year and early this year, I ran into a bunch of people who got my age pretty impressively wrong. First there was the guy who asked "So are you in collage or high school or what?", then there was a couple of people who thought I was about 20, then there was the guy from the youth health clinic who invited me to stop by if I needed any of their services - who was quite surprised to hear that I'm turning thirty this year, and thus am a few years off their client age range.
I've never thought of myself as looking youthful - in fact, when I was a teenager, people often thought I was older than I was. It's just odd!

Last night my dad was on the phone to someone, who I guess asked how we're doing? And he said, "Oh, (my name) is doing fine, of course!" and I'm just sitting in the next room like... Dad. No. Incorrect.
Nice to know I can fool someone, I guess?

My old username, Philstar22, which I can't remember why I thought it up other than I came up with star22 when I was in middle school and then added Phil to it for growing up in the Philippines, led some people to think I was a guy because they assumed Phil was my name I guess.

I still use it here only because it is what people know me by. Everywhere else I use DragonofMordor, which represents me more I feel.

In high school people thought that I listened to like... folk music and new age and stuff because I had a very "boho-esque" style (lots of floor-length patchwork skirts and peasant tops, chunky jewelry, stuff like that). I blew a lot of minds when they found out that one of my favorite genres of music was power metal.

Ever since I came out as asexual to my friend a couple of years ago, she sometimes goes over the top with calling me 'innocent' and basically like a child, despite the fact we've known each other since high school - where we use to write up porn jokes about our favorite characters and watched hentai & yaoi together.

a LOT of people think I'm married. IDEK why. I'm ace with no inclination towards ANY sort of relationship, whether it be sexual or romantic and I live on my own.

But I'm always taken for a) being married and b) having kids. IDEK I guess I give off a mom-vibe?

In high school, I had so many classmates who thought I was super religious because I wore long skirts, didn't wear makeup, and usually did my hair in two braids. I wasn't religious. I wore the long skirts because it was hot and I was too lazy to shave my legs and I did my hair in braids because I literally didn't know any other way to style my hair at the time. I didn't know how to apply makeup either, but that was because my parents wouldn't let me use makeup until I was sixteen and I didn't know how to get it to look good.

I was one of the first openly bi people at my school.
A few years later, two of my closest friends got into a same-sex relationship, and when I failed to react beyond congratulating them (to me it was NBD), I was apparently homophobic or something? Despite me having same-sex partners every other month...
And because they engaged in lots of PDA around me, I was somehow uncomfortable with their relationship.

I was just honestly uncomfortable with the extra PDA. Lots of braless boob groping. In public.

Anyway, we aren't friends anymore for unrelated reasons, but this really highlighted how they saw me.

A lot of my relatives lost their shit when I smoked a blunt with them. Guess I give off a narc vibe.

And...I guess my coworkers thought I was a lesbian for a long time? I worked at a manufacturing plant, so I would show up to work with no makeup, wore mom jeans with geeky fandom tshirts, never bothered to do my hair aside from ponytails and buns, and never flirted with any of the sad thirsty straight dudes at work. I showed up at a goodbye party to one of the few friends I made at that place all dolled up and it was weird the way my coworkers talked to me and treated me.

Born and raised in a small town in Missouri by two parents who were not. Several times in Middle, Jr. and High School i had people ask me if i came from England (and i wasn't faking an English accent, or any other kind of accent).

I always thought it was pretty weird.

In high school some of my friends thought my parents must be very strict/conservative because I never dated anyone, tended to leave parties early, and always wanted to let my parents know where I was and how/when I was getting home (in an era before cell phones made that easy - I think I annoyed people with my constant "Okay, but I need to call home first.")

Not being able to get a date was down to being an awkward dork with bad skin, not any rules on my parents' part. I'm glad my friends loved me enough not to notice this and assume the problem was external.

The rest was a strategy to not give my parents any reason to want to impose a curfew or other rules, or to not let me hang out with certain people, and so on. Be responsible and they will overlook the occasional misstep. It worked very well! Once in college the RAs caught some of my friends and I together in a room with alcohol even though some of us (although not me by that point) were under age. The university told me they were going to send a letter to my parents as punishment. I called my parents so they would hear it from me first and their response was basically "Well, we figure you need to sow your wild oats..."

people often assume i am my brother's mom. granted we get along well and i drive him around often and do kinda spoil him sometimes (he is the baby of the family after all). so i can see why our dynamic looks like i'm just an incredibly casual mom to outsiders haha. but he was born when i was 10. so when i was a lot younger the thought hadn't even occurred to me to be prepared for people asking whether he was my kid. as a petty self-conscious teenager i negative-self-talked my way into believing it just meant i looked old and was a buzzkill or something?

So I'm an atheist, far left politically by US standards (pretty mainstream for Europe) and am really into horror and true crime and love disturbing, fucked up books and shows. I'm also asexual, aromantic, and not interested in marriage or kids (and honestly don't really like kids).

People always assume I'm nice and innocent and for some reason I attract very traditional, conservative, Christian guys who want a wife who will have a bunch of babies and stay home that they can control. Even if I did want a relationship, that type of guy is the last fucking thing I'd be interested in.

I don't know what the hell kind of vibe I'm giving off or how to stop it because it's really damn annoying when people assume I'm basically the opposite of who I am.

I think people often low-key assume I'm mean and/or shallow because I'm pretty and I like fashion.

I'm not too mad about it though. I get it.

I do get annoyed if they talk to me for a bit and continue to assume I'm shallow/not very smart, but the majority of the time people realize I'm friendly and at least moderately intelligent (not like I'm a genius but I hold my own).

I'm an English teacher in Japan, and I'm white as can be, but one of my students was convinced I had to be Japanese because I can speak Japanese.

When I used to be fat I got mistaken for pregnant a lot, which is weird because I didn't look pregnant, I was just fat.
Also, a really good friend of mine thought I was bi (I'm not, I'm straight) and I'm not sure why she thought that.

Apparently on first meeting me most people think I'm supper innocent and naive, the sort of person that would blush at the mention of the word "penis" and fall for every single scam ever.

Also adding my name to the "some people think I'm a lesbian" count because apparently they can't think of any other reason why I don't have a boyfriend and I am not looking for one. It's called social anxiety and lack of self-esteem, you dolts.

My parents thought I was a lesbian and dating my best friend. I have a suspicion that's something other people think or have thought over the years as well.

A teacher thought I was gifted and only bad in her class because I was just bored. She also thought I was "distracted" by my "goth friends" - I wasn't a goth and didn't have any contact to the goth kids at my school.

A classmate in uni thought I studies Japanese studies because I had one Japanese parent. Because my eyes looked Asian. They don't. I'm not Asian in any way, nor is anyone in my family. She was dating a Japanese guy and spent quite a bit of time in Japan. I still don't know what she was on.

In general, people assume I'm much more competent than I am. I'm great at faking that, apparently lol

And then there was this lady who was the choir leader of a choir I was in who kept insisting I was a soprano even though I repeatedly told and demonstrated to her that that shit was too damn high for me.

Back then on LJ a friend of mine adamantly thought that my main fandom was Naruto. It... was not. Definitely not. My main fandom was (and I'll pretend it's still) FullMetal Alchemist, I'd already written hundreds of ficlets for it; Naruto was *her* main fandom but to me it was really anecdotic and we met through our shared side fandom of Bleach (which later took over and became her main, but never mine either; while I developped a conflictual relation to ever having briefly and superficially been in the Naruto fandom at tall).

The lady in charge of making my neurodivergent ass fit at my job in the normal world thought that popping out babies would fix my executive dysfunction and sort out my life.
(I'm celibate, I'm the one baby-hater that give child-free people a bad name, I'm a fucking neurotic mess, shut the fuck up!)

My own sister assumed I was a cat person. Because she had one when we both lived at our parents'.
My sister-in-law assumed I was a dog person. Because everyone who's not owned by a cat is, right?
