Ugh, me too. Huge pet peeve.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely agree, it feels so unimaginative

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The same goes for making the "bottom" skinnier/smaller and/or more ~emotional.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
HONESTLY!

I already have an issue with deciding that a character being skinny/more emotional makes them The Bottom. I've had to disengage with the fandom for one of my favorite things ever just because of people who are AGGRESSIVE about how the skinnier half of the main ship MUST be a bottom, could NEVER top, and is just a NERVOUS UWU BABY-- never mind that he's actually normally very confident and self-assured and take-charge, because he's skinny he's a bottom and because he's a bottom he's weepy and emotional at all times, and to suggest otherwise can get you dogpiled.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeesh, it definitely goes both ways* and is annoying regardless.

* As do my OTPs in my fics because I hate strict top/bottom dynamics anyway. But I do love subverting the fandom "consensus", sometimes simply out of spite.

OMG! I'm okay with skinnier/smaller in context, but i DESPISE the 'emotional' part.
So. Fucking. Much.

Eh, I don't mind a little tweaking. Like, if the top is an inch taller than the bottom in canon, I don't mind if he's described as being three inches taller instead. I find a bit of size difference hot.

But tweaking the heights slightly is one thing and radically altering them is another. If the top suddenly towers over the bottom that's going to throw me off.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, like
I don't mind pushing a pre-existing height difference, especially because posture can make a big difference in whether one character might appear to loom/tower over another for Sexy Height Difference reasons. And a couple inches isn't a big deal if it's already a taller character. But I'm with OP on reversing them. Like, just be into a short top/tall bottom if you know you like the characters to be one way for the dynamic but the height difference goes the 'wrong way'?? I don't get the big deal with the penetrating partner HAVING to be taller every time.

Sometimes it works out that way, sometimes it doesn't.

Ah yes, the amount of time my stupid ass has forgotten to check/use references - finish a drawing only to realise that I got the height of a character wrong.

Sometimes I try and fix it, but it's equivalent to that anime about the manga artist who uses boxes for his characters to stand on - and coming up with the excuse that standing on boxes is the new teen craze.

I agree. What's wrong with having a shorter character top? I've read some amazingly fics where that happens. Specifically some super hot Kylux fics with Hux dominating and topping a much taller than him Kylo (although Hux bottoming while domming is also hot).

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
But Kylo is only 4 cm taller than Hux. Broader, yes. But "much taller than him Kylo" is actually one of the "fandom gets it wrong" cases, no matter who tops. They are not much apart in height at all.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You would think that people who really prioritize height differences in sexual dynamics would check first before committing to a particular arrangement. If you feel the characters should do things a certain way only to find out that the heights don't work out the way you would have felt was "proper," then take that as a sign that height doesn't need to be an important factor in these things.

(If it's a situation where you don't know the character's relative heights - say, it's a book that doesn't describe their heights - I see nothing wrong with making things up. If a later installment describes their heights, then I can forgive people sticking with what they had made up. It can be hard to adjust how you see a character in your mind's eye after getting used to seeing them a certain way.)

This is logical, but I think you're coming at it from a whole different angle than they are.

I think most people who change the heights of the characters pick which character the want to bottom/top based on what the character's like, what the pairing dynamic is, and also (for some people) which character they personally identify with more.

Then, once they've picked their preferred top/bottom dynamic, they change the heights because for them it just makes things hotter. They're not doing it because they think the bottom has to be petite. They're doing it because they want the bottom to be petite, because it's hotter to them if he is.

Yes.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Though, occasionally, things like framing, filming tricks, wardrobe, and posture are used to make characters taller/shorter than their actors and that can muddy the waters.

Also, I'm not a big fan of epithets anyway, but if an author uses taller man/shorter man, the characters better be at least a couple of inches in difference, so I don't have to look it up to figure out who the author is referring to.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
It's a thing in Ironstarnge. On the screen they're almost the same height but the actors are not, however the difference is not that big. Fortunately it's one of those ships where the roles are not set. It happens in one or two fics I love and it honestly gave me a pouse reading that. It reads like a relic of the seme/uke days.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Me: Ok, sex scene.

Also me: whyyyyyyy!!!!
Why do it that way?

Ahem.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just the fandoms I roll in, but I see a lot of instances where the taller more "masculine" character in canon is feminized and shrank down a few inches in order to emphasize that "he's a total bottom guuuys~"

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's this weird backlash against the "more masculine guy tops" trope. They try to be subversive of this trope but still have other tropes firmly embedded in their minds and that results in "look how subversive I am, making this masculine dude the BOTTOM but whoops, gotta make him smaller and weepy because he can't be a proper uke otherwise".

The Witcher (Netflix) fandom does this a *lot*. There's a 3 cm difference between the actors, but so much of the fanart has Jaskier a good head smaller than Geralt, and looking like a teenaged boy on top of it. I don't really mind in fic - between the books, games, one other show and one movie that all pre-date the Netflix show, fans mix and match in their fic, and the characters are a lot more fluid. But art that is so clearly depicting Joey Batey's Jaskier and Henry Cavill's Geralt showing a difference like that? It just rubs me the wrong way.

Yeah, it feels like it's manipulatively shoehorning gender normative roles into places that should be free of them by definition. It's 2020 and we can't have a sexual receiver who isn't coded as the 'woman'? Really?

(Anonymous) 2020-05-21 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I lean feminine and a bottom. But a lot of this "bottom is a personality type" stuff just repeats the same sterotypes that I've experienced through harassment and abuse. A lot of time I just don't have the energy to figure out the fine line between respectfully kinky and abusive anti-femininity that doesn't respect my personal boundaries.
