Because you were a kid?

the whole world is more intense as a kid! cut yourself some slack haha

i used to be absolutely terrified of the x files theme song. like a chill would run down my spine whenever i would heard the first few notes that dreaded whistle smh. and my parents were fans but i never said anything, just suffered in silence*~*~

last year i made it my ringtone. practically speaking, bc that whistle is rly easy to hear when it's noisy or i'm in another room etc. but also it's a jam, what was my deal?!

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Not quite terrified, but the Unsolved Mysteries theme punched my “get ready to fight-or-flight” button pretty hard as a kid, even though I watched the show itself. But I was just ready for something to happen whenever the theme kicked in until the host showed up.

ayrt - Haha, that is great! And also glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought of Robert Stack appearing as a sort of "safe zone" (but others seem to have been creeped out by his voice, aww).

Lord, yes. That show creeped me the hell out as a kid. I loved it, though :D.

Oh same! Maybe it has something to do with kids being able to hear higher frequencies? You should check out the X-files "Love Theme", it's chill af - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yDe97WGYsY

I mean it is creepy and has murder in it, so its kind of fair for kid you to have been scared. Hell, I know adults who are terrified of that movie (although its mostly due to having a fear of dolls).

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of kids would be very scared at the idea that their toys can potentially kill them. Be kind to yourself as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2020-05-20 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a cousin who used to scream his head off or run away at the mere mention of the word "Chucky". If he sees an image of the doll he becomes inconsolable for quite some time. He's otherwise a fairly normal behaving kid, so you weren't the only kid that was extra terrified of this movie.

To make matters worse both his parents thought it was funny so they would either repeat the name Chucky or ask him if he watches the movie 'jokingly', so his fear lasted unnecessarily long from the encouraged behavior.

sa, missing words

*ask him if he wants to watch the movie

I've seen kids playing with actual Chucky dolls.

Those parents sound horrible! Who does that to their kid!

As a kid I was terrified of a scary looking face in an old black and white movie. It is even revealed in the movie itself that it is just a mask used by someone to scare people and the movie is a comedic detective story and not scary at all. But that face haunted my dreams when I was a kid.

I found it:

Huh, I think I get that - outside of context, there's no music, just the wind and storm gusting outside and a slightly long shot of the first man searching. But then suddenly you're closer to the action, and then that sound as the masked man's pulled up!

Yeah, I can still see why it had such an impact. And in the movie there was this legend of the dead man and I was fascinated by that. That movie was on TV often and I always wanted to rewatch it despite being so scared. Now that I rewatched it I'm amazed that it was just this little scene. I thought there would have been more of it.

When I was three, I was scared of The Count from Sesame Street. When I was seven, certain episodes of The X-Files terrified me. When I was thirteen House On Haunted Hill terrified me. None of those things scare me anymore.

I think it's extremely normal to be easily frightened as a child.

You were a kid, OP. Things are scarier when you're a kid. My nephew used to be so scared of the Cybermen when he was little, but now that he's a teenager, he laughs at them.

I thought Beetlejuice was a scary movie when I was little. I loved it, but I thought it was real horror and not horror comedy.

Oh and I still have a mild phobia of E.T., lol.

For so long, I assumed I wouldn't enjoy horror movies at all, because I was scared really easily by movies (that weren't even supposed to be scary) as a kid. But I actually love them, and was surprised when I gave a horror movie a try and wasn't particularly scared the whole time. Preferences change a lot!

As for why it scared you so much, I think movies can be especially overwhelming for kids, and kids have way less experience with the world, so it's harder for them to notice when special effects are silly/cheesy. That might be some of why?

dude he STILL scares me

After watching the first Gremlins movie I was terrified that there was one under my bed. I refused to put my toes anywhere near it, and would take running jumps to get onto it XD

Ah, the Gremlins movie always scared me as a kid too. It didn't scare me enough to not watch it with my sisters but it always gave me that sick to your stomach vibes. I think it's because I though the Gremlins looked weird and uncanny.

Some of the scary-movies-but-made-for-younger-audience movies are more creepy and unsettling than legit rated R horror movies. How I'll never know.

The Halloween movies always gave me creeps too and the stampede scene in The Lion King.
