101) I like both

139) Did you actually read Hetalia? Yes it makes light fun of history and country stereotypes but you can actually learn a thing or two from reading it as there are little history lessons behind the jokes. I enjoy Hetalia because of the historical aspect not because of the bishounen. In fact I find the character designs not that great.

Or you could just read a history book. If you have any kind of attention span or imagination at all it should be interesting to you without someone having to turn all the countries into cute guys to hold your attention.

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I never said I read Hetalia in place of history books. I just said it was a fun way to learn a few historical facts. That doesn't mean I said it's my main source for learning history.

Speaking as someone who reads more about international history than most will in their life time, I see nothing wrong with reading a comic that draws out historic events over reading a history book.

It's stupid to assume that everyone who likes comics over books can't "handle" reading.

I like comics but I don't use them to learn history. And I didn't assume anything about comics, more about bishonen characters.

Surprise! There are lots of Hetalia fans who ARE History fans and/or majors. Nice generalizations and elitism, yo.

Shove your misuse of the term "etlist" up your fucking ass. Hetalia still sucks. Enjoy your Japanese version of European history.

Exactly while I did not major in history I've always been a big fan of history well before I started reading Hetalia. I've always enjoyed reading both historical fiction and non-fiction.

This might be a strange concept to you, but some people might actually LIKE that kind of thing. It doesn't mean that they're any dumber or have a shorter attention span. Is The Daily Show a crappy news show because they add a little humor to their news? (And yes, I know they stress that they are fake news. But you can still learn a thing or two from them, even though you're laughing the whole time)

Re: 101, 139

(Anonymous) 2008-11-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, calm down. It's just a cute little comic that features anthropomorphic countries. Yeah, it can be a little stereotypical at times, but the trick is just to breathe in and remember that it's just a comic.

Besides, I don't think anyone takes it as Gospel truth or anything. Sure, there are fun little facts, but that's all. The cute boys are just bonus points. :)

(Apologies for any incoherency, I'm half-asleep.)

Ramble ramble ramble (Sorry)

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a huge history fan, but I've never found much interest in WWII or the Revolutionary War. This series has actually gotten me interested in certain parts of those wars. The fact that it takes a light-hearted view and pokes fun based on stereotypes gets me interested in the actual events. It's sort of like saying, "hey look, this stuff can is not just blood and suffering, it can be fun too." The comic is not laughing at the horrible events, and if one were to say that it inappropriately skirts those issues, well... it's not a deep drama series, it's pretty lighthearted. How could you ask a comedic series to talk about rape and the holocaust and any of the other atrocities from the war? =\

And saying someone who has any attention span or imagination should read a history book for information is sort of mean. Comics and shows have sparked interest in all sorts of things for me. Granted, I went to more realistic sources afterwards, but honestly. History books are generally pretty dry reads. Not all history writers are Will Durant. ={

139. I like the historical aspect, but I honestly cannot tell the characters apart from appearance. It is very frustrating.

Yeah I agree I find the character designs sort of unappealing actually and I also find it hard to tell certain characters apart. I am hoping they improve in the anime version.

Maybe it's because all white folk look the same? *shot*

I can honestly say that it took me a good month or so trying to figure out who was who. And I still mix some of the up. But after reading it for a while, you start to figure out who's who. xD

Re: 139

[identity profile] cavechan.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember a lot of people not even knowing Sealand existed before they read the comic. I didn't know either. I had crappy history classes. This comic helps to understand things a lot better. And I will always say this: GERMANY COULD HAVE BEEN DEPICTED MUCH, MUCH WORSE.

I also am not a fan of the designs in that they really DO look similiar many times. ._.; When Iceland came out I was like "nuuuuuuuuu!" Another blondie with flat hair and bangs. DX He looks just like UK and Russia and Finland... ugh. =-= The most unique designs are probably Turkey and Egypt which you don't even see much of. xD

You might know the history, but so many weeaboos don't... see the stupid Spaniard secret from yesterday.

Moefying countries is not history. Making light of the horrors of war isn't history. Stereotypes do more harm than good.

Re: 101, 139

Last time I checked there are stupid people in pretty much every fandom. I don't think we can hold that against the comic. The stereotypes are meant to be silly and ridiculous if people take them seriously then that is their fault.

And I don't think Hetalia makes light of the horror of war at all. It just uses random facts about historical periods (WWII included but not the only one) to tell little jokes. I am Jewish so trust me I am very sensitive when it comes to anything that revolves around WWII and this comic is not offensive in the least.
