but you can actually learn a thing or two from reading it as there are little history lessons behind the jokes

Or you could just read a history book. If you have any kind of attention span or imagination at all it should be interesting to you without someone having to turn all the countries into cute guys to hold your attention.

I never said I read Hetalia in place of history books. I just said it was a fun way to learn a few historical facts. That doesn't mean I said it's my main source for learning history.

Speaking as someone who reads more about international history than most will in their life time, I see nothing wrong with reading a comic that draws out historic events over reading a history book.

It's stupid to assume that everyone who likes comics over books can't "handle" reading.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I like comics but I don't use them to learn history. And I didn't assume anything about comics, more about bishonen characters.

Re: 101, 139

[identity profile] grazie.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt the poster of the comment bases their history off of it either, and you assumed opposite of me. Either way, you assumed something about intelligence here and it's stupid.

There are random facts in Hetalia that most people have no clue about, and it makes for an interesting dramatization. I'd think that if you've read the comic, you'll have picked up on that.

You should check out the comic book(s) The History of the Universe. Quite a fun read that's an entertaining and broad overview of human history.

They can enjoy their assbackwards and/or oversimplified version of history then. (Or inaccurate -- I don't trust the Japanese to give me an unbiased account of WWII)

Oh, shut up, will you? Anyone can learn quite a bit about history from any medium. Not Hetalia, really, but my point still stands. I'm a history major, and my primary readings don't consist of comics, thanks. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy Axis Powers: Hetalia on a superficial level as well.

Re: 101, 139

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Surprise! There are lots of Hetalia fans who ARE History fans and/or majors. Nice generalizations and elitism, yo.

Shove your misuse of the term "etlist" up your fucking ass. Hetalia still sucks. Enjoy your Japanese version of European history.

This is just so you know, but the creator of Hetalia is educated in, and living in, New York City.

Re: 101, 139

[identity profile] kirarakim.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly while I did not major in history I've always been a big fan of history well before I started reading Hetalia. I've always enjoyed reading both historical fiction and non-fiction.

Re: 101, 139

[identity profile] dropsofgleam.livejournal.com 2008-11-30 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's exactly what drew me in as well. And quite a big part of the fandom, from what I've seen. So it seems it's not just the cute guys or the jokes at expense of national stereotypes. =P

hello there 101 OP

Because I'd actually bother to make a secret about something I didn't like, and apparently agreeing with the OP makes you the OP, right?

I was just wittily pointing out the similarities between your statement and the so far negatively received 101 secret in this same post.

So I take it you're not a fan of 1776, either.

Re: 101, 139

[identity profile] nikkernoodle.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Everyone should be a fan of 1776. Just like everyone should be one with Russia, y/y?

Re: 101, 139

This might be a strange concept to you, but some people might actually LIKE that kind of thing. It doesn't mean that they're any dumber or have a shorter attention span. Is The Daily Show a crappy news show because they add a little humor to their news? (And yes, I know they stress that they are fake news. But you can still learn a thing or two from them, even though you're laughing the whole time)

Re: 101, 139

(Anonymous) 2008-11-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, calm down. It's just a cute little comic that features anthropomorphic countries. Yeah, it can be a little stereotypical at times, but the trick is just to breathe in and remember that it's just a comic.

Besides, I don't think anyone takes it as Gospel truth or anything. Sure, there are fun little facts, but that's all. The cute boys are just bonus points. :)

(Apologies for any incoherency, I'm half-asleep.)

Ramble ramble ramble (Sorry)

[identity profile] ensuing.livejournal.com 2008-12-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a huge history fan, but I've never found much interest in WWII or the Revolutionary War. This series has actually gotten me interested in certain parts of those wars. The fact that it takes a light-hearted view and pokes fun based on stereotypes gets me interested in the actual events. It's sort of like saying, "hey look, this stuff can is not just blood and suffering, it can be fun too." The comic is not laughing at the horrible events, and if one were to say that it inappropriately skirts those issues, well... it's not a deep drama series, it's pretty lighthearted. How could you ask a comedic series to talk about rape and the holocaust and any of the other atrocities from the war? =\

And saying someone who has any attention span or imagination should read a history book for information is sort of mean. Comics and shows have sparked interest in all sorts of things for me. Granted, I went to more realistic sources afterwards, but honestly. History books are generally pretty dry reads. Not all history writers are Will Durant. ={
