Re: How much do you hate when you see a great fic...

When one character behaves in a sexually manipulative and predatory way towards the other, but there are no tags to indicate that dynamic.

RA:

Question. How would you tag such a dynamic? Would the dark fic tag work well enough? Power imbalance tag? If character A isn't like that, dark!A?

I only ask because I'm writing fic where one of the characters is canonically manipulative, the other is not but will act similarly (and have a power imbalance with another chararcter)...and I just don't like to give too much away with a tag. I understand people wanting to avoid things they don't like/might trigger them and people trying to find exactly what they like, but I feel like some tags give too much away. Like by tagging dark!fic, that's already an indication of what I should expect. But I'm open to seeing what others suggest!

da

i think the issue the other anon is talking about is when the writers of a fic are clearly unaware that they've written this power dynamic into a ship, they think it's fine and romantic but one half is pushy and emotionally manipulative and basically has to coerce their LI into a relationship/sex. which is all kinds of Yikes when being presented as normal or desirable? especially if the canon-character isn't like that as well.

but if it's canon that a character is like that then that's different, i already know A is likely to manipulate someone because they're like that in canon, or if a ship between A/B is super fucked in the canon i won't be put off or surprised if the fic is also depicting that relationship as fucked yanno?

I'll tag warnings for things like "manipulative relationships", "power imbalances", "unhealthy behavior", and other similar things but don't consider those spoilers since they don't say who is doing what or how it happens. Just that the topics/themes/content in the fic have it so people who don't feel comfortable shouldn't read it.

I don't consider trigger/content warnings spoilers, especially if it's a longer story and not just a one-shot. But if you really need to avoid it then go with "choose not to warn" and the appropriate "here there be dragons" tags that let people know they should probably avoid it if they're looking for fluff.
