How much do you hate when you see a great fic...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
With all the tropes you love, a pairing you love, and it is complete BUT it is a wall of text with no paragraph breaks. And two misspelled words in the first two sentences. ;_;

What other fanfiction woes do you have?

Amazing ideas, great execution, pairing I love...but the romance part is written the exact opposite way from what I enjoy about the pairing. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Don't need to but felt like clarifying since I suddenly remember the top/bottom conversation from yesterday and there's an A/B/O thing below. I don't mean the sex scenes. >_> Even if I cared, I generally just scroll all the way to the ending to check it out before I read the whole fic since I don't consider having sex in an explicit fic a spoiler, lul.

I mean like, idk random example, I feel like person A would patiently wait until B solves all their issues before trying anything, but instead A is written as pushy. Shit like that coupled with the characterization feeling perfect in everything else but the romance makes it seem like I just have fundamentally different understandings of why/how a certain ship works that the writer, and that annoys me far more than reading a badfic...

Most of my biggest hates revolve around really extreme OOC stuff. Instant backbutton. I hate it when a summary sounds interesting, but I click on the flick and I start wondering from the first paragraph what tv/movie/book the author was watching/reading.

yeah, I don't like that either.

Someone whose writing I like posts an abo fic for my OTP and it sounds like it's the type of abo fic I like. But the alpha/omega roles are the opposite of how I like them.

One character does nothing but babble and flounder and stutter awkwardly. The other is suave and seductive and manipulates every situation to their liking.

Re: How much do you hate when you see a great fic...

(Anonymous) 2020-05-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hate that one too.

Or when it's one character doing all the work in the relationship (some going as far as fixing the other character's life entirely) while the other character drifts awkwardly thinking they don't deserve the attention...er, you really kinda don't, you're not even trying here.

When one character behaves in a sexually manipulative and predatory way towards the other, but there are no tags to indicate that dynamic.

My biggest frustration is that 90% of fic writers rush into the sexytiems/RST portion of the fic way too soon for my liking. :(

Fanfic: There's this one author who writes fic for some couples I like and the smut is quite hot but...... she really....... overdoses... the fic.... on ....... elipses.
My major pet peeve which is my number 1 back button guarantee is constant tense hopping. Once or twice? Annoying but can happen. But every paragraph? No. Just no,

A pairing I love, great premise and interesting setting, but the author just can't write or has a really annoying style.

When people forget that my favorite character was a part of the group too. Yes, he wasn't physically there with the rest of them, but he was still part of the group and made important contributions to it! Nothing makes me back-button out of a fic faster than when they have a get-together and the author just plain forgets his existence and doesn't even mention him in passing. I could even buy a "he's too busy to drop by in person" because that would be IC, but at least remember that he exists, dammit!

Slow burn that puts in all the work into creating a dynamic and believable relationship but skips the final hurdle just to get the characters together faster. All that work basically means nothing if the conclusion suddenly jumps to character A wakes up one morning with a gay epiphany and B apparently wanted them from the start anyways so time to bone, y'know.
Like I've seen people write "I just couldn't wait any longer!" in their authors notes, and shitty reviewers complaining and borderline begging for the next chapter to get the smut already.

I'd probably finish reading it, but nothing disappoints me more than that.

Daddy kink (especially without warning) and stupid nicknames that get used over and over by the fandom. I'm also not a big fan of character x reader fics but the ones where the "reader" is supposed to be vague but still has all these specific details (including name, age, body modifications, etc) are especially pointless. They might as well just write character x oc.

Ngl I wouldn't mind having your fanfic woes.

For a while, mine were like "Wow this fanfic about my ship is great! Oh wait... that writer was once my friend but then we had a falling out/they became mean to me/etc" so I avoided reading their fics, even if it was probably well done and had my favorite ship and tropes.

Part of me wondered, "If I didn't get to know the writer, would I still enjoy their fics?" Within that idea of separating the art from the artist, to an extent?

My OTP's in character, the writing's excellent, things are getting hot and heavy when suddenly there's random de-aging to make one of the characters a child and I have to nope the hell out of there.

gender bending

Why do they do it?

Also a casual bashing of a background character who I happen to like.

The 'no, it's fine, i'm okay' and never going to see a doctor/medic/whatever, especially when the character has been shot or stabbed or has broken bones or wtfever. HATE that in fanfiction, hate it in movies and tv. HATE.

It's in-character, well-plotted, and the prose is beautiful... except for the epithets all over the place. ("The taller man," "the blonde," "the cocky space ninja," but anyone's actual name is used exactly one time ever.)

All tell, no show -- to the point where more reserved characters are acting out-of-character, especially, and it's all in service of making the pairing happen faster; like, after the first paragraph faster. Usually paired with a bad writing style that's either incredibly simplistic sentences OR astoundingly purple prose.

Also, second person. If I see a "you" doing something, I'm out of there.

Intricately and very interestingly plotted story with my favorite characters behaving in-character, nice relationship build-up, exciting mounting tension leading to the climax of the story, and then BAM! - plot twist that means none of it counts.

Seriously, I've read a couple of these now and the twists were more inventive than 'it was all a dream' (it was a magically enhanced virtual reality or the POV character's now in a different timeline), but just as frustrating.

A/N stating what to expect in each chapter (although i do bypass the AN) as well as any story that where the author states "if you don't like XYZ (problematic trope etc) then maybe this isnt for you and you shouldn't read this?" Like....dude this was tagged. TAGGED. ughhhhhh i always feel like the author is doing baby's first dark fic(TM) becauae honestly...
