How's it going, FS?

Tell us all about it!

Re: How's it going, FS?

It's okay. I deadheaded my roses, scooped all the poop in my backyard (I have a dog, lol), refilled the birdbath and the feeder and put some special mix food out (corn, peanuts, sunflower seeds) for the squirrels/crows/scrub jays. I'm on my patio in the shade but it's 90° out, so pretty warm. Trying to decide what to have for dinner, something that won't heat up my kitchen. Like takeout.

So I found out about gaps in my door and window.

Unfortunately, I found out about this while the pressure washer guy was blasting at it, right where I was doing remote computer work. :/

Well, I'm hoping to have someone address it tomorrow. Pretty sure the door gap's an access point for bugs too.

Better than yesterday - I felt like complete warmed over shit all day yesterday, and I've felt sorta ropey at times today but mostly fine. So that's been nice. I did get annoyed about work - boss asked me to do a thing, I pointed out to him that it looked like someone else had already done it and could he make sure it wasn't an error in our project management system, he was like "oh, no, i'm sure it's not a duplicate" and then messaged me again half an hour later that actually I didn't need to do it because the other person had done it. So that was sort of dumb, but w/e.

So now the big thing left is deciding whether I'm going to have leftovers for dinner, or cook.

I'm all done with my finals, so I'm just chilling in the dark with my AC on blast now.

Mostly okay.

My boss came by earlier and dropped off some stuff for me to do (that I can't do on the computer), and I've been watching YouTube and looking at random stuff online in between cleaning.

I'm gonna make some dinner in a bit, then might make cookies or brownies or something later tonight.

Stressed. My job is wanting to cross train me in logistics since they have let some people go.

Production planning requires attention to detail but no mistakes I make will have lasting damage.

In Logistics, if I mess up something it could cost us thousands of dollars or a lost shipment. We ship from our factories overseas to our USA location. It also requires a lot more phone calls and interaction with people (which I hate).

The person doing the job currently also seems to do work off the clock (a few hours). I am paid hourly and have to clock in. I am not going to be working off the clock for free. I am not that dedicated to the place I work.

The start to my day was delayed by a massive migraine that started the night before. If I'd known I wouldn't be able to sleep it off, I'd have taken my medication then instead of after waking up.
Cleared it up entirely within an hour.

Otherwise I went on a run and spent a lot of time looking at the chick which hatched yesterday. Calling them Cheepapeep.

We are guiltily trying to dissuade a couple of foxes who’ve moved in under the porch with music and coyote poo. Mom and I feel REALLY bad about it, but they’ve dug out so much gravel!! Right over a spot that trends to leak into the basement. We’re softies so we’re not going to be more aggressive than that, but Mom still wants to make the token effort.

My computer is in the shop to fix the microphone, so I'm on my old one that barely works. It takes so much loner to do anything and half the time some of the keys don't work.

Dead tired. Been working my butt off finishing assignments and I have more to do. Plus I need to go to work additional hours at some point this week along with my usual obligations.

On the other hand, I'm steadily getting keeping on top of my self-care stuff, which has been helping me get through all this. My cat has also been a sweetheart and has been curling up next to me which is always appreciated. :3

*sigh*

There was the possibility that the budget at the Fire Department wouldn't allow for me to keep working there after my AmeriCorps stint was up. (We lost some real estate, which means about 30,000 dollars yearly in tax revenue. We're small, so that's a big hit.)

Found out yesterday that yeah, the budge won't support even another year of me as a VISTA there (stipend from AC, the station pays a small yearly amount to AC).

So now i have a little less than two months to find a new job. Fuckity.

Fanfics you still think about, but have been deleted or unable to find

(Anonymous) 2020-06-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Adult ffnet was my first fanfic site when I was about 13, and I remember being obsessed with a Yu-Gi-Oh! vampire AU fic - where all the vampires had destined soul mates but were dying out and being hunted down by Pegasus. Yami was the lost king of the vampires who was going mad because he was hung up and left to starve, until Yugi (who kept having dreams about going to the very location Yami was at) finds him and tries to help Yami down - only to instantly get bitten and becomes a vampire against his will.
It was unfinished when the site crashed, leading to loads of fics getting wiped out and the author never re-uploaded it. Even though the way I remember it was just a badly written vampire story, I still would like to read it again if I some how became possible.

Also forever ago on AO3, there was an aged-up South Park super-hero AU fic that was essentially a version of MCU Winter Soldier with Tweek as the soldier with memory loss and his ex-boyfriend Craig returning to team up with other superheros to find a way to rescue Tweek and stop the bad guys. It was one of the few time where I'd see a deleted story in my bookmarks and actually knew which fic it was, and I really regretted not downloading it when I had the chance.

I would read the hell out of that first fic you described, OP. Shame it's been lost. The other day I was thinking of a DNAngel/Romeo and Juliet crossover fic with Daisuke as Juliet and Hiwatari as Romeo. I don't remember a whole lot about it, but I really enjoyed it and I wish I remembered more than that vague description.

A comedy scriptfic crossover between FF4, FF7, Suikoden, and I think a couple of other JRPGs of the time. It was about characters meeting in a bar, getting drunk and venting complaints. I know it sounds silly, but 20 years later I still think of it. (It wasn't on ff.net, just some random website.)

Back in the mid 00s I read a long CSI: Las Vegas case fic, and partway through, the serial killer they're trying to catch kills Greg.

I hadn't read very many long fics at the time (I was still reading fanfic almost entirely on FF.net at that point) and I remember being totally riveted and in awe of this fic. I have no idea if I'd still think it was good if I read it now, but I still think about it sometimes.

The only Jensen/Jared (SPN) fic I ever read. It was super long and completely AU. One of them had powers where when he played the piano, like...a light show happened. Or he could put things into your mind? I don't remember well. But it had music incorporated into the fic and was well written. It was taken down so the author could turn it into an original story, iirc.

Communities You Miss?

(Anonymous) 2020-06-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by a secret from yesterday: what are some communities, fandom or otherwise, you miss?
I lost my lj and what I really miss from there is Little Details. I went there all the time to get obscure, hard to research information for my fic...which I didn't even intend to publish! I just wanted to get things right anyway.

this is the first time I've checked in here for probably eight or nine years. I found an old fandom secrets lj link in my bookmarks so I thought I'd come back and look at some old posts. I wasn't expecting the comm to still be active. It's a nice suprise that there are still people here. Fandom was way more fun when it was more lj/dw based. I hope life has been treating you all well.

Writing question

(Anonymous) 2020-06-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it's an unspoken rule of fiction that no two characters have the same first name, but how do you manage this when you have a massive amount of characters?

I'm writing a story somewhat based on some real events, and there were a TON of people involved. I've tried to come up with unique names for all of them, but it just doesn't seem realistic that there wouldn't be at least a couple repeating names when you're talking about a large group. I don't want it to be confusing, though, and some of them don't play a huge role in the story. They might only be mentioned a couple times and then aren't brought up again, so I'm wondering if I should even bother giving them a name in that case. Just describe their role in the story, and move on. "Her husband's lawyer" or "the man who murdered John's mother" or "the psychologist", for example.

Thinking about it now, it seems obvious that that's a much better way to go than naming every person that's even peripherally involved, but I'm curious what you guys think.
