Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

I don't understand why everyone in America is obsessing about mask-wearing so much. The vast majority of Americans are wearing masks! The majority of Americans are wearing masks anytime they enter a public place! More Americans are wearing masks than Canadians. Far more Americans are wearing masks than Brits. More people could be wearing masks but America isn't far behind France or Italy or the Asian countries. And yet because the people who don't wear masks are so vocal and so stupid, mask-wearing is this obsessive concern.

The real problem with American society responding to the virus is our willingness to gather in public places, not our unwillingness to wear masks. I don't know where everyone got this idea that no one in America is wearing masks. It's not true.

It really depends on the city, though, and even areas within the city. I notice folks on the outskirts of my city are kind of 50-50, while I tend to see a higher percentage wearing masks further in the city (not to mention being more courteous).

But like you said, the stupid ones are also the vocal ones, and that can give a different impression of what is actually going on.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of the problem is that the people who object to wearing masks are objecting VERY loudly and VERY obnoxiously, and that their objections also come with a lot of ridiculous related baggage such as (but not limited to): conspiracy bullshit, anti-vaxxer bullshit, good old fashioned racism, pathological levels of selfishness, YAY TRUMP, etc. etc.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
This. The anti-mask minority is exceptionally loudmouthed. And the latest "reason why I donwanna wear a mask #5437" is "it's an actual sin to cover up your God-given breathing apparatus". Like seriously, they're spinning it as a sin to wear a mask.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I slot that under "pathological levels of selfishness", along with "wahhhhh I can't breathe" (while the country is rioting over a black man who was literally suffocated to death by a cop kneeling on his neck) and "blah blah carbon dioxide poisoning wahhhhhhhh" and "FIRST AMENDMENT muh rights no mask wharrrgarbllllrrrr garrrrghhh!"

I honestly want someone to ask that lady how she feels about such things as motorcycle helmets, ski masks and Halloween masks.

I wouldn't say the 'vast majority'. Certainty not the vast majority where I live, where masks are practically non-existent, and weren't terribly visible even when our numbers were going up up up (which they still are, but everyone seems to be ignoring it).

I went to the store over the weekend - I was the only person wearing a mask that I saw other than a few of the employees.

It's an issue.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

AFAIK, the only statistical, non-anecdotal evidence about Americans wearing masks is polling. So that's where I'm getting this from - polls from YouGove and Pew indicate that most people are wearing masks.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly, the people responding the YouGov are the people that won't be wearing masks. Americans outside of larger cities will have less people responding and less people wearing masks.

Yeah, i really don't trust polling on that. A - a lot of the non-mask people won't do polls because they think it's rigged/will steal their info, and a lot of people like on polls, even when they're anonymous.

I live in a small town and WalMart is one of the few places to shop for groceries. I'm not the only one, but the majority of customers are definitely NOT wearing masks. Most of the employees are, but they're doing it badly as in wearing the mask underneath their nose or just on their chin. It's very frustrating.

Fucking hell, this. The Dollar General people have stopped wearing masks altogether, the grocery store stopped the 'one way in, one way out, directional marks on the aisle' thing, and people are just...acting like it never happened.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
they get the idea because in some areas (cities, counties, states), NO ONE IS WEARING THEM.

I can go into one type of store in my city and probably 75% of people are wearing masks. I go down the block to a different store? ZERO. I'm the only one and I get angry.

The problem is, it's not a blanket universal thing everywhere. When the mask usage varies from shop to shop within a city, within a county, within a state, there is no such thing as universal coverage. The only way this is going to work is if we, country-wide, require masks in public in every city and state and if you wanna bitch about it, take it to the fucking Supreme Court but in the meantime enjoy being on 14 days quarantine for not wearing one. We need to bring back the 1918 policy of deputizing citizens to issue fines for not wearing one. All our cities could use a nice little financial windfall from idiots who refuse.

I mean, I guess? But the only non grocery, laundry, or work things I’ve done since March are go to a BLM protest where everyone was masked and outside, get tested for COVID a week later, and get evaluated for workers’ comp last week after fucking up some tendons while bringing someone their curbside pickup. The riskiest thing I do on the regular is take a bus and trolley to work, where there’s always at least one and usually several other passengers without masks despite it being required statewide.

Yes, people having illicit parties (social gatherings are still banned here) are probably responsible for a lot of spread, but people not wearing masks inside anywhere, legal or not, are still causing problems.

Americans don't have health care, so if they catch it they die. Wearing a mask is the only safety they have basically.

(not an american btw)

Yup. But it's a Democratic hoax, it's just a weird flu, it's not that bad, numbers are going down, it'll go away in colder weather, it's NOT PATRIOTIC ONLY PUSSIES WEAR MASKS MUH FREEEEEEDUM!!!

America is one stupid, fucked-up country.

At least where I live, the vast majority of people are wearing masks. Which is great, but there are still a few assholes who will put on a mask when a grocery store worker tells them to and them immediately take it off when the worker leaves. There are also many people who leave their noses uncovered or take them off completely when talking to somebody.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-28 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, to be clear, the people who aren't wearing masks are assholes and should knock it the fuck off

I just think it's weird that the messaging is obsessing over wearing masks as opposed to the various other public health problems, and also, there seems to be this weird narrative that positions not wearing masks as a uniquely American social problem that is not true at all

(british here)

i couldn't give two shits about the mask thing (in the last three months i've been from my house to the supermarket a few times, once into town to meet a friend (social bubbling) and twice into work when my pc had issues)

but i really wish people would learn how to distance properly, and respect when other people are trying to - there's very little more aggravating than hanging back 2m behind the family of five clogging up the aisle at asda only for the person behind you to come charging through everybody

People going to supermarkets in groups... like, fucking WHY? Asda is not a fun trip out. I get bringing your kids if you don't have anyone to watch them - grandparents are out of the game now - but last time I went nearly everyone was in a couple, and there were groups of threes and fours and even fives bimbling up and down the aisles like bellends. Just tell one person to go! It's not a day at the beach! Fucksake!

Exactly. What happened to social distancing? There are still gatherings with people standing less than six feet apart from each other.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-29 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
I went to a hypermarket last night because I needed a few things and couldn't put if off any longer. It was filled with groups of teenagers hanging out in the store in close proximity without masks.

So, a few hundred people were there and only a small fraction of them were wearing masks and half of those that were weren't wearing them right.

So there's that.

Re: Controversial Opinions (Non-Fandom)

(Anonymous) 2020-06-29 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Anecdotal story: I live in San Jose, California, and went to buy a new refrigerator today (had to, my old one died), and while there were quite a few people in the appliance store, every last one of them was wearing a mask properly and were practicing social distancing. Then I stopped by a big outdoor mall to pick up dinner and only saw a couple of people not wearing masks (they closed the streets through the mall to set up outdoor tables at all the restaurants). So lots of people out and about but most of them were doing what they are supposed to do.

It's a big deal because President Dumptruck politicized something that should be a totally neutral safety precaution. Also in my mother's state nobody is wearing masks. She's at risk every time she goes to the grocery store.
