One, I think I would like the Lebowski version of almost any character. Two, as I recall wasn't people's primary issue with that version of Thor that they felt it was fat-shamey? Which I think is a slightly separate thing

Three, I had to laugh at "They don't act like royalty, they're bratty and entitled." That actually seems pretty correct to me!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck them. Fuck that. I'm sorry, anon. That kind of shit absolutely makes the red mist descend for me as well.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
My issue with Lebowski!Thor is 1. the characterization was really fat-shaming with the way it was written as a joke and 2. Thor is my #1 MCU wank material and he just wasn't hot to me that way and I'm totally just that shallow.

lol

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally agree! It's one of the absolute most fascinating and best parts of SF&F for me.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that was really shitty of them and I'm sorry. People do so much stupid crap at times like this.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay. People mean well, but goddamn do they say and do stupid ass shit. The sad part is, they really believe they are doing something good. I'm sure I'd be punching them in my mind at least a few times.

I'm with you on Ragnarok Thor and delighted when I see someone else with that view. It feels so lonely sometimes.

I'm 50/50 on Endgame Thor. I felt like there was a LOT they were *trying* to do given all the losses he's suffered but there was still too many echoes of Ragnarok Thor in there for my liking. Also the comments about his appearance were a bit much after a while. Having said that, I'm glad that in the final battle he didn't get a magical makeover and still fought while on the bigger side. I think that did mean a lot to some people.

No offense but this just seems like kind of a weird combination of ideas somehow? Like isn't there a dissonance in saying Thor shouldn't be fat because, one, fatshaming is bad and, two, Thor needs to be hot?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Three, I had to laugh at "They don't act like royalty, they're bratty and entitled." That actually seems pretty correct to me!

And why does that seem correct to you?

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Troll troll troll your boat!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Because not everything is about a happily ever after. There are AUs and the multiverse. There are dark ships. There is just pure one-shot smut with random pairings. There are threesomes and moresomes. There are past relationships of characters.

There is so much to explore in fiction. Sure I have some OTPs. I also multiship. The idea that OTPing is the only option is completely ludicrous.

I think children of royalty are entitled more or less by definition, and the way that young members of the royalty and aristocracy act, through history and in the present day, seems like 'bratty' is a pretty reasonable word.

SA

I don't think Thor being fat is inherently fatashaming. I think how they did it was fatshaming. They played it off as a joke. His weight was a thing to make fun of. That was the fatshaming part.

Thor doesn't need to be hot. I like Thor being hot. Sorry. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I doubt they would have done that same sort of storyline with a female character because women have to remain hot. Well, Thor was a male character that was considered hot by many people.

Some do. Some try to live up to the duty they're born into. Edward VIII and King George are perfect examples of polar opposites, despite being brothers.

I'm so sorry anon.

If it makes you feel any better, when I got a life-threatening tumour, one of my co-workers suggested I drink my own urine as a cure. People say truly stupid shit in response to chronic/terminal/serious illness.

These pictures are spot on. 10/10 secret design!

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with both of your reasons.

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about the royalty thing. Though it will seem anachronistic to most these days, royalty in the past has much more responsibility than just hand shaking and waving. If societies in fiction operate along those lines then I want to see the characters at least have some semblance of that duty and responsibility in their characters.

I don't blame you for feeling that way....

(Anonymous) 2020-07-19 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
OK. But OP presents it as though young royals acting that way is unrealistic, as though in acting the way they do, they're not acting like royals and that they would only be acting like royals if they used their privilege for the sake of their people. Whereas in fact, the descriptions they give are not really unreasonable or uncommon for royals to act, especially young royals, and might even be more common and more realistic.

And I found that funny.
