Favorite magic systems

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-08-30 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some of your favorite magic systems in different fandoms?

Re: Favorite magic systems

(Anonymous) 2020-08-30 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Daemons in HDM, everything in Legend of the Seeker, some stuff in HP but not other stuff, the cool stuff in the Covenant but not the ageing thing, and the magic Dr Strange has but I still wanted to see that explored more, I also like goddess worship mixed with witchcraft but it's not very common in media.

I don't know if this counts but I liked in the Narnia book, Prince Caspian, when Dr. Cornelius refuses to teach the prince magic applications because anyone with political power shouldn't have magic power as well.

I like the systems in the Spellsinger books and the Wizard in Rhyme books, and I often think of using them in fic in some way, but I'm too chicken - I have an ingrained cringe reaction to 'songfic' and the like, which I have yet to overcome.

Favorite fictional technology

[personal profile] philstar22 2020-08-30 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
What is some of your favorite fictional technology that doesn't exist in our world at this time?

Re: Favorite fictional technology

(Anonymous) 2020-08-30 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Still waiting on my advanced cybernetic body upgrades.

Teleportation and personal flying transport are on the wish list too.

I'd like a robot butler/housekeeper/cook/driver too. So I could ask for mac and cheese at 2am without worrying I was waking someone up.

Two Cats: The Journals of Vincent Tucat
It was on Wattpad for some time.
Politicians are nothing more than thieves and crooks, as everyone surely knows. Nowhere is this statement truer than in Harael. It's a city where citizens are taxed by the thieves who rule it, where a Lord's reputation is everything.....

Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell
Was on AO3. Does it count as self published?
When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam's cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control.

Daybreak on Hyperion by Aorii
This one has an anime feel to it.
Born into noble prestige and gifted with genius intellect, Pascal was a promising officer cadet who rose to national fame before even graduating. At the mere age of nineteen, he had everything a young man could wish for... Except his habitual arrogance had destroyed every opportunity of a close friendship.

Widdershins by Jordan L. Hawk
Some things should stay buried.
Repressed scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has two skills: reading dead languages and hiding in his office at the Ladysmith Museum. After the tragic death of the friend he secretly loved, he’s ruthlessly suppressed any desire for another man. So when handsome ex-Pinkerton Griffin Flaherty approaches him to translate a mysterious book, Whyborne wants to finish the job and get rid of the detective as quickly as possible.

Dragon Slayer Carter, Isabella
Huh, another arranged marriage trope.
Ingram is a coward and weakling—at least according to his father, the king, and the royal court. He cannot use a sword, he faints at the sight of blood, and even his brilliant abilities as a strategist are not enough to overcome his failings. When his father loses a bet to the notorious Lord Mallory over the matter of a dragon slaying, he pays his debt by ordering Ingram to marry him.

I'm sure I missed a few. I don't tag 'self published' books.

These will all be SFF and are all on Amazon.

Percival Gynt and the Conspiracy of Days by Drew Melbourne. Comedic Space Opera, Percival Gynt is an accountant and sometime adventurer. A chance meeting at a train station pulls Percival into finding the Engine of Armageddon and becoming the universe's last best hope for survival. And he still needs to get to dinner on Sunday with mother! (Good Omens vibes)

The Order of the Key by Justine Manzano YA Superhero Fantasy... if Season Five Buffy met the X-Men. Jacklyn doesn't want superpowers, but she has them. She's a Guardian while her sister is a key and with their powers being out of control, they're pulled back into the Mysterious Order of the Key. But things aren't as they seem and Jacklyn's questions about the status quo may bring the whole order tumbling down.

Our Bloody Pearl by D.N. Bryn. YA Mermaid Fantasy. When Perle was captured by the Pirate Kian who has found a way to silence siren songs, she didn't know why. Now, another pirate has perhaps freed her. But paralyzed and unable to sing or swim, Perle will have to rely on this pirate to help her and maybe find out why she was targeted in the first place.

The Rising by Terra Harmony YA Mermaid Fantasy (I did MerMay) When orphaned mermaid Serena breaks the rules one too many times, she's assigned to be the werewolf liason. The King won't give her answers and now she's got to figure out the secrets of the past, her birth, and what the werewolves really are.

Sins of the Sea by Laila Winters Pirate Fantasy. Running from an unwanted engagement, Princess Sol and her wolf are rescued by pirates. Sheltered Sol keeps her Magic a secret, while Pirate Captain Flynn is searching for an artifact to end the wars forever. Maybe their secrets won't tear the Pirate and the learning to be Plucky princess apart.

Shockwave by Lindsey Buroker A Space Opera. Robot assassins he helped build are after Casmir, and all he wants to do is get off the planet in one piece. And if he can do that, well, then he'll have to survive somehow from the assassins and then the pirates on his tail. (BBT meets Star Wars)

Lindsey is a big amazon indie author. She has lots of books in lots of genres.

The Call of Chaos by Sean R. Frazier a DnD Fantasy Adventure (Not LitRPG) Years ago, magic and goblins vanished from the world. Now both are coming back and Co'ril Silvermoon and the unlikely group of people he meets on his adventure have to follow the threads to see if they can end the peril.

Sun's Guard: Ten by Rebecca M. Horner. YA Contemporary Fantasy. All Caley wants to do is get through her last year of HS with the last family member who will take her in, Granny Kay. Everything changes when she finds a unicorn and his baby colt in the barn. The colt has decided Caley is his Guardian and there are Goblins attacking!

Pixie Me Up by Willow Mason Paranormal Cozy Mystery. When Rosie goes to collect her inheritance from her great aunt, she's not expecting a house or to be turned into a Pixie! But, the pixie dust has been stolen and now it looks like her great aunt was murdered and someone is after her next.

The Lone Prospect by Ginny O. Urban Science Fantasy Drama. Gideon VonRothe is looking for a new pack, what he finds is the Heaven's Heathens Motorcycle Club. Clueless, Gideon is quickly sucked into the life and is going to have to make a huge decision, does he stay, or does he go? Sons of Anarchy meets the Expendables meets werewolves.

Ginny O. also has new takes on fairy tales. (more mixed up than played straight. Think Mercedes Lackey 500 Kingdoms but with a warrior princess instead of a fairy godmother)

Have yall seen how advanced Halloween animatronics have become?

Like, just look at the ones on the Spirit Halloween site. https://www.spirithalloween.com/category/decorations/animatronics/pc/1005/1011.uts

Those things are crazy and not even super expensive. That nurse one is amazing.

Anyone watching the Tour de France?

(Anonymous) 2020-08-30 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really follow cycling but I love the Tour de France, and I'm glad it's on even if it is about 2 months late. The countryside is so beautiful (today is day 2 and they're to the north of Nice, in the mountains), and the course is challenging. I don't have a favorite (and it's too early to say who's going to be the main contenders), but it's a fun thing to observe. Some day I hope to actually get to see it in person.
