Based on the first secret

What element of story telling never gets old for you, F!S?

I'm not the OP of secret 1, but mist is pretty cool! I like spooky houses in a gothic setting. Whether they're really haunted or just spooky = love.

... I'm currently reading (and loving) Gideon the Ninth, and so I'm going to say snarky dialogue and unexpected-but-evocative turns of phrase ("The man who’d put the sword to her neck was uncomfortably buff. He had upsetting biceps. He didn’t look healthy; he looked like a collection of lemons in a sack." comes to mind).

Aww man I wasn't sure if I should reply to this as I *loved* Gideon and don't want to put you off the sequel, but the lack of snarky observations by a snarky protagonist is definitely one of the reasons why Harrow just isn't clicking for me as much. I also don't like Harrow herself as much in this one. Like, I didn't want nor expect a carbon copy of Gideon but so far I'm just not feeling the second book as much.

To be the opposite, I loved Harrow the Ninth. It's def a different breed of book from Gideon, and quite a lot heavier I thought, but Tamsyn Muir is still an absolute madwoman on a mission to make you go "oh no you fucking didn't" during it.

Creepy/spooky houses that may or may not be haunted. I'll take both a rational explanation and full on supernatural explanation. Just inject all the associated plot points and tropes into my veins!

Characters who are born normal but somehow become a king or queen and then die at the end.

It's extremely specific but it's more likely than you think. Those characters always end up my favorites.

I'm going to have to say snow and the sea. We so rarely get snow and it's so magical to me (probably because it never stays long enough to be a nuisance! )

The sea is quite a volatile thing in stories. It can be gentle, it can be a violent force.

I love food. Loving descriptions of food, characters who make food, food that's symbolic or in some way significant - that's the good stuff.
I like the loving descriptions of food in Kerry Greenwood's books, particularly the Corinna Chapman books; I have a special place in my heart for the German film "Bella Martha", and the scenes where the main character talks to her therapist about food - she talks about food as an alternative to talking about her feelings, but of course, her feelings come through very clearly.

I strongly suggest the Antique Bakery manga. The main characters all work in a patisserie and the images of the food are gorgeous. They even go into depth describing it.

If you haven't watched "Babette's Feast" you need to do that asap. It's about a woman who used to be a chef but now works as a housekeeper for some old ladies who belong to a small, kind of Shaker-esque religious group that believes in living simply and frugally, and one day she gets a bunch of money from her nephew and decides to cook the community a fancy feast like they've never had in their lives

Dragons. Magic. Beautiful scenery. Hope permeating the plot. Sword fights. Characters sacrificing themselves for others. Powerful villains who are genuinely evil. Redemption stories. Cats. Animal and human bonding. Different species working together. Different cultures working together. Badass, physically and/or magically powerful women. Genuine heroic characters vs clear villains rather than antiheroes or semi-villains vs worse villains. Female bonding and multiple female characters working together. Slow burning friendship to love romances. Romances between two villains.

An individual or group in a hostile environment with limited resources has to survive.
Can be an action movie where the hero is trapped in a building with the bad guys like Die Hard, or a Robinson Crusoe family/society-focused story like Lost in Space, or a military show like Stargate Atlantis.

Long-lost family (or made family) finding each other and things are GOOD, post-apocalypse done smart, in-story talk and discussion that's not only on point but actually advances the plot - don't need to always be go, go, go!

I'm always a slut for characters being put into an arranged marriage with someone they barely know or don't know at all and then they gradually fall in love as time passes and they get to know each other. I'm especially a slut for stories where the marriage is for a political purpose and the couple has to deal with political stuff along with their marital relationship. Bonus points if one or both doesn't actually want to be in the marriage at first and is only doing it For The Kingdom/For The Family and we get to see them first trying to learn to get along for the sake of the alliance or what have you and then gradually developing a personal relationship after that.

Very specific, but I have a thing for scenes where characters are filmed being quiet and introspective in a moving vehicle, looking out the window, and the camera films the view through the window, maybe with music over top. It does so much to ground me in the character and the story. I always feel those scenes so intensely.

Ivalice games caused me to realize I apparently have a non-sexual kink for fathers/brothers/sons betraying and/or killing each other. I thought it was just the excellent games that were by an excellent director and had similar themes but then it happened on a couple TV shows unexpectedly and I totally spazzed. ...Wtf self.

Also suicide attempts/ideation but I know exactly where that comes from.
