Funny this is after the previous secret.
I'm tired and only really pay attention in that I can warn people that she's done it again so maybe stay off social media.

It's that whole thing - like, South Park? It's the attitude that was encouraged by that and all its imitators, that the worst thing in the world is to be invested in something. The only way you can be cool is to not care. The delusion trolls have, that they're master manipulators stirring up all the people who don't have their arch detachment, monocle and top hat securely balanced - instead of what they are, which is pathetic dipshits who haven't worked out that human society runs on 'giving a shit'.

I think most people dismissing the whole schmozzle with JKR are aware, on some level, that a powerful public figure promoting transphobic myths like the 'man in a dress lurking in the ladies' loo' is going to put real people in real danger. But if they have to actually think about that, they'd have to examine too much of their own behaviour, and that stresses people out. So they don't.

U mad, bro?

Or alternately, some of us are trans and after months of this, are out of shits to give out of all the shit we're looking at this election season.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
SA: There's this implied judgement going on here where if you're not still outraged after months of this you're a bad trans ally. And that is really a shitty attitude to have.

OP (of secret comment not of secret)

I totally get where you're coming from, this is something I left as a comment not in a secret submission thread and I probably wouldn't have submitted it as a secret. Not because it bothers me or anything, just that I agree that we've talked about it too much.

I had someone in mind at the time who seemed like they were really proud of not caring and it bugged me

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT: I am absolutely fine with people who are tired of, well, everything? taking a step (or a whole bunch of steps) away from the general flaming garbage fire that is this year*. Put on your own metaphorical oxygen mask before helping anyone else with theirs. Your mental, emotional, and physical health are important.
But I'm pretty sure - not dead certain, but pretty sure - that most of the people tweeting about how 'omigawd, no1 cares anymore, shut up about jkr already!' are in that state. They just don't want to be bothered by the knowledge that other people, uh, exist.
See also some of the comments in previous threads on this topic - the accusation that anyone who says they're bothered by Rowling's actions is really just being "performative", and they're faking outrage for kudos. Is that something you'd say? Hopefully not! Is that something some jackass who grew up thinking Cartman was a role-model would say?
Yep.

*and a lot of time leading up to this year, let's be honest

At this point, how is instagramming yourself burning JKRs books helping trans people? It's clear that the window for change closed weeks ago. Her influence on my day-to-day safety as a trans person is marginal. So yeah, when I see allies spend the majority of their energy on perpetual JKR wank, I think their priorities are misplaced.

If that bothers you, I'll just point out that it's my health care, my safety in public, my family life, my rights in the criminal justice system, and my ability to make rent each month that are threatened on a daily basis here.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
It comes down to people having their own shit to deal with and are too busy dealing with their own lives to riot in the streets every time someone's feelings are hurt. Most people just care about themselves and their small circle. That is how life works.

It doesn't help when you ask the people who are upset, and not trans, why they are angry a good number of them can't pin down why what she said was so offensive. They make it sound like less of an issue then some trans people want to make it.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's reasonable to read too much into the fact that many people on social media are chronically ill-informed

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It is mostly only people on social media having issues with her. A few news articles have been published but her books are still top sellers, her movies are still being played, etc.... No one else seems to care.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
To be clear, there are many people on social media who are able to clear critiques that specify why they consider what JKR said objectionable

There's also a lot of people who can't, because it's social media

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Not a badge of honor but it is funny to be able to say "I don't care," and watch the person you're talking to explode when they realize that you actually do mean it.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
This sounds a lot like you regard it as a badge of honor

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
All my friends irl don't care. Same with Depp's abuse. I'm the one who wents my opinions on these things and get a "I don't know these people/ Don't care". Gotta say it does look cool.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm in a privileged enough position that what she says doesn't effect me, personally, so I can ignore it and continue blindly consuming her media and paying her money for it."

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
You sound charming.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I can't figure out what this is actually saying behind all the I feel that people say they feel that people feel that they say that they feel that people feel that something something JKR.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
same.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care. It bothers me a little that I don't care but I just don't.

Probably not all of them, but yeah, some.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
But that's always been a thing, being too cool to care.

If among the many things that are going wrong with the world, you are too emotionally burned out or fatigued to give anything to this particular matter, I can get that.

If you do care, but your response has been more moderate because you don't have the same emotional investment in her creations as others do or because you just overall tend to take a less intense approach, I sort of get that.

If you do care and your response is to condemn her for her transphobia, but take what good you can from her works, I totally get that. I also totally get if you can't go near anything associated with her because of how you feel about what she has said and done.

But if you don't care because you think it isn't a big deal or you don't want to be like others or you think it's fun to just sit back and watch or it's cool, remember that she has a huge platform, that the stereotypes and misinformation that she is perpetuating, not only cause emotional pain to transgender people, they reinforce the opinions of other bigots who already feel pretty emboldened to discriminate, bully, and attack transgender people.

There are 100 different things people can be doing to support trans people right now beyond criticizing JKR, which IMO is both low-effort and low-impact.

Re: Probably not all of them, but yeah, some.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
which IMO is both low-effort and low-impact

I agree, but come to the opposite overall conclusion from you. imo, if criticizing Rowling were high-effort and low-impact, then people shouldn't bother doing it, because it just wouldn't be worth it. But since it's low-effort, then the fact that it's also low-impact is less of a big deal.

Personally, I've criticized Rowling for her transphobia and also done some higher impact things to support trans people like calling my representatives about various trans-related issues, signing petitions, and donating to organizations that help trans people. Because criticizing Rowling's transphobia is easy, and I've got the time and energy to do both.

My whole life I've been consuming media I have to disassociate with its creators. Most of my favorite genre - rock - is filled with lyrics and history that is really not great.

The view i've come to is that all art is greater than its creators. Humans are fundamentally flawed - every single damn one of us. We all have ugly parts without exception. But art has the ability to be greater than all of us. Harry Potter spoke to millions of people with its themes of friendship and found family. JKR's idiocy, Warner brothers gross mass marketing, none of that changes the story for me.

But that doesn't mean I don't think that JKR is being extremely irresponsible making the comments she has about such a vulnerable group of people.
