(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 12:50 am (UTC)(link)I have no problem with Hetalia. (Though, seemingly unlike a lot of people in the fandom, I was able to see why it could be offensive to some.) I like the concept. I've even tried to read it. It wasn't my cup of tea. I got over it, and moved on. I'm one to let people have their fun.
But I find it disgusting and hurtful that you're telling people who are offended by Hetalia that they're just being "judgmental" and "politically correct." Seriously? Wow. You're going to tell someone whose relatives were Holocaust survivors, who doesn't want to read Hetalia because of what it signifies, that they're just being "judgmental"? You're going to brush off people's legitimate feelings just because they don't happen to mesh with your own?
I'm not bothered at all by the concept of Hetalia, but by the seeming lack of self-awareness that a whole lot of the members of the fandom seem to exhibit. When you're dealing such heated issues that hit really close to home for some, people are going to be offended. Really. It's extraordinarily entitled and ignorant for Hetalia fans to think that everyone should be accepting of their hobby. Granted, I think the haters that continuously whine about Hetalia's existence aren't quite entirely in the right either, but that doesn't give Hetalia fans the right to whine about people being offended, either. Jesus fucking Christ.
Also: "political correctness," to paraphrase someone, is a term used by those who tend to trivialize the scars of others and minimize the suffering of victims, while whining about their own wounds. I wish I could banish it from all discourse.
Re: 127
Or, rather, they can whine all they want but I'll find them monumentally hypocritical.
And a second helping of word for that comment about "political correctness."

Re: 127
(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 01:27 am (UTC)(link)There are members of the fandom who are perfectly aware of how subversive the concept is, and we're not trying to push it into anyones' faces. I doubt OP is whining that people hate it. I'm pretty sure they know why. I think they're just annoyed with the excuses people give to hate it without even trying to understand what the series is about.
And Hetalia itself does not even come close to touching anything to do with the holocaust, It's just that people do get up on their high horse because they think it does.
Re: 127
(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)Frankly, your comment that Hetalia doesn't come close to touching the Holocaust is utterly irrelevant. So what if the comic itself doesn't technically cover the systematic genocide of the Jews? It still comes close enough (the whole comic is largely WWII-era European political interactions, for god's sake) for some people that it can be upsetting. And even if the source material doesn't directly, the fandom still will. (Witness the kink meme, which I won't go into further.) Plus, it isn't like the Holocaust was the only atrocity anyway. Other horrific things are covered in Hetalia, and a lot of people aren't going to be comfortable with that. It's simple.
Your use of the phrases "high horse" and "bandwagon" seems to indicate that you have some sort of scorn for the people who are offended by Hetalia. You seem to think that people who are offended by Hetalia are out of some misguided desire to feel popular, or to feel superior to others. Well, some people might dislike Hetalia for those reasons, but here's a newsflash: I think most people dislike Hetalia because it deals with touchy subject matter in a lighthearted manner that some might find inappropriate. That is what makes people uncomfortable, and you shouldn't scorn them for that: they're not being unreasonable in the slightest.

(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)OP
(Anonymous) 2008-12-26 01:50 am (UTC)(link)If you gave it a try and the tone of the series or portrayals of the characters isn't your thing, that's cool. I'm happy you gave it a chance and tried to look beneath the gender-imbalanced surface. That was the whole point of my series.
The "political correctness" was actually specifically referring to the "Why aren't more countries women? They're MOTHERLANDS" or "HOW DARE THEY MAKE COUNTRIES INTO HOT GUYS?? HOW TRIVIAL" comments I see floating here and there. Essentially, the comments saying that Hetalia's sole existence is non-PC.
So, I respect your opinion, and I hope you don't misinterpret this secret as generic hatred towards anyone who doesn't agree with me. Happy holidays!

Re: 127
You guys can have your fun, but that doesn't mean people can't say, "Um, ew."
Personally, I'm sick of this. Let them do whatever, I'm still going to think a small part of that fandom is..uh..yeah. :\
